HERBIE HANCOCK IN CONCERT:

Few jazz artists have achieved the degree of crossover success enjoyed by legendary post-bop luminary Herbie Hancock. Beginning with 1973's seminal Headhunters, Hancock unleashed some of the most innovative and accessible jazz funk of his generation, and he continues to innovate both in the studio and on stage. As one of jazz's most beloved living legends, the opportunity to see Hancock is the stuff of fan dreams, making his 2014 appearance at the Hollywood Bowl one of the most coveted concert events of the summer.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Born in Chicago, Hancock was recognized as a child prodigy from an early age, receiving a classical music education and performing with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra as early as age 11. Despite not having a jazz teacher, Hancock developed a unique harmonic sense by ear, earning a reputation with his exceptional piano playing that ultimately caught the attention of Miles Davis. After joining Davis's Second Great Quintet in 1963, Hancock enjoyed a period of tremendous success and growth as he forged a unique and influential style. His association with the Blue Note label resulted in some of the most popular jazz records of the '60s, but it wasn't until the 1973 release of Headhunters that he would achieve international superstardom. The album marked a watershed moment in the development of jazz funk, skyrocketing to the top of the Jazz Albums chart with now-classic crossover hits like "Chameleon" and "Watermelon Man." Always one to experiment, Hancock pioneered the use of electronic instruments in jazz, and the results, such as the synth-heavy hit single “Rock It,” found head-bobbing fans across the globe. With more than 40 studio albums and a half-century of touring under his belt, Hancock's continued presence on the road in 2014 is sure to be the stuff of legacy and legend.

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:

"Herbie Hancock wove all of the jazz classics he made famous in to new arrangements that gave his ensemble a platform to demonstrate their superb individual talents. The group played over two hours and then played an encore."

"Great Show... A nice mix of Herbie Hancock's jazz classics, some newer songs, and an improv piece. Very innovative encore especially if you want to see someone doing a jazz solo with Conch Shells!"

"Virtuoso musicians treated us to unexpected and unimaginably difficult rhythmic interplay. Each player was completely in control of his instrument and contributed equally to the magic of the event. At 71, Herbie brought the fire and burned up the stage."

The concert was amazing! LangLang showed great piano skills as a classic, romantic pianiest. Herbie Hancock played a jazz wonderful solo. Also they two were so passionate when playing together. The comcert was definitely worthy!

    It was not worth it!

by DWSantaM on 8/8/09Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

I expected musical exchange between classic piano and Jazz. Both, Herbie and Lang Lang deserve a better show

    Not what I expected

by casualmusicfan on 8/8/09Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

I was disappointed. I didn't expect to listen to an interminable and obscure opening number, which was more Philharmonic than Hancock. I felt like the first half of the show was a boring waste of time. I expected "Hancock jazz" with some accompaniment, not what we got. It struck me as odd that the conductor basically begged the audience for more applause after each number, as if we weren't applauding enough (I think my disappointment was a shared experience, based on discussions overheard during intermission and afterward.

    Weak

    by Concertgoer86 on 8/8/09Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

I've enjoyed crossover collaborations in the past (Menuhin/Shankar, Von Otter/Costello, etc.) but Lang Lang and Herbie Hancock aren't a compelling pairing. Hancock isn't a very accomplished acoustic pianist, and the musical conception doesn't create a fertile meeting ground with the technically amazing (but maybe not very substantive) Lang Lang. Their "Rhapsody in Blue" was the low point, destroying the integrity of Gershwin's composition to allow for individual displays in which Hancock couldn't keep up.

Hancock and Lang Lang Join tour de forces

by kokomolad on 8/8/09Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

Two outstanding musicians joined the LA Phil at the Bowl with a range of musical feasting and an unexpected blast. Lang Lang's virtuosity in classical music is well known, but his versatility and enthusiasm for all types of music became evident. Herbie Hancock revealed that he is no slouch at the keyboard either, matching Lang Lang note for note. The hi-lite of the evening came during their duet in Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue. This classic american symphony performed by such great talent was an experience we will always remember! Outstanding phrasing and performance as they "dueled" their way through this exceptional score. I hope it was recorded on video and sound for future enjoyment by the world.

What Hollywood Bowl is all about!

by blondeinla on 8/8/09Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

Spectacular night at the Hollywood Bowl. Herbie Hancock and Lang Lang dueling it out on the pianos was unforgettable. And the LA philharmonic is outstanding. This is part of what living in Los Angeles is all about. Would highly recommend that everyone experience the Bowl. Brought my 15 year old daughter and 10 year old son as well. Thought they would be bored but they loved it.

    nice, but too long

by losangelestraveler on 8/8/09Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

herbie hancock and lang lang both delivered expert performances, but spent a little too much time showboating. rhapsody in blue was an incredible song to finish with, but did they really need 10 solos each in between interludes?

Herbie and Lang Lang: A Mix of Cultures

by ChamberBaso on 8/8/09Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

I had a general idea of what this recitial was going to be like, but it exceeded my expectations. I liked the mix of Jazz and Chinese music that the two played, but what awed me the most was undoubtly Gershwin's "Rhapsody in Blue". It is such an amazing piece, and I thought the two played it wonderfully. Overall, this event was a lot of fun, and for those who can still come tonight, I recommend it!

    Herbie Hancock

by DingoDog on 8/8/09Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

Talent personified!! Lang Lang' style and showmanship easily stood up to Herbie's. The solo mini-set done by Herbie dragged a bit but Lang Lang's was gorgeous and clearly connected with the audience. Herbie would have done well to perform a selection of his more recognized material - he did Cantaloop but just as a theme in and out of his other selections. The second half of the show was clearly the best half - Rhapsody in Blue with Lang Lang and Herbie Hancock at dueling pianos! Fantastic! The encore was again a bit of duelingpianos without the orchestra but still entertaining.

    A Living Legend

by Frida on 8/8/09Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

Nothing says summer in LA like a night at the Hollywood Bowl. It was such a beautiful night that I would have been happy to hear almost any musician. But Herbie Hancock showed why he was the master. He was funny and gracious. He showed real love for Lang Lang and their collaboration was amazing. It was a real treat to hear his medley of his own songs. I feel lucky to have been present.

Herbie and Lang- Taking it out on the keyboard

by lollipopluv on 8/8/09Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

Herbie Hancock and Lang Lang were almost tied in their abilities on the piano. Herbie's years of experience was obvious, while Lang's performance was flawless. They went for several minutes, on sheet music, barely reading, but still remembering their place. The philharmonic was. as usual, on point. Strings, winds, percussion, all came in at the right moment. Hurray for the conductor who knew where he was the entire time. I had expected a little different style of classical music with Lang Lang being there, and would have liked to hear how Herbie Hancock handled it, but all in all, it was an event to remember. The weather was perfect, the food was great (we brought in sushi) and the acoustics delivered. Aside from the helicopters flying over now and then, everything could be heard down to the softest flute.
