  • Simply sublime

by TJBMike on 12/4/09Nokia Theatre Times Square - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

Guess my review might be a bit biased being that I am a lifelong Herb Alpert fanatic who has seen this particular show a couple times already. The fact that it's my third show says it all. The show was fabulous. The music, divine. Herb's tone on horn sounded particulary strong tonight, Lani sang like a bird as always, and Bill, Hussain and Michael are virtuoso jazz musicians. Herb and Lani share their warmth with lots of audience involvement. I even bought the T-shirt emblazoned with that beautiful abstract painting of Herb's which also hung as a tropical-tinged backdrop onstage. What an uplifting evening. What a joy to have Herb and Lani back out on the road again.

  • not worth it!

by lanifan on 12/4/09Nokia Theatre Times Square - New YorkRating: 1 out of 5

Let me preface this review by saying I am a huge Lani Hall Fan, as I’m sure much of the audience was. It has been over 25 years since she last performed (8/84 - Jones Beach),or at least the last time I heard her perform. I had tickets to the Lincoln center concert that was cancelled, and was ecstatic to see that she rescheduled at the Nokia theatre. But for those of us who have missed her for over 25 years, relying only on our vinyl LP's, this concert was a bust. All she and Herb sang was new material (nothing great I must add). NOT ONE OLDIE! Herb said from the get go "no requests", and he stuck to it despite requests from the audience for some of Lani's Classics. Every concert we attend, for any performer, always has some new material, and we expect it; but always we are given a taste of the past, because that is why we come. But to sing nothing that we remember, (and truly loved,) was totally insensitive. The concert is for the fans, and as a Lani Hall fan, I was disappointed. The applause were weak, and sitting in the back, I saw many faces as discouraged as I was. For those people who are Herb Alpert fans, i think they enjoyed what they he heard, but for me, a Lani Hall fan, it was a bust! I think I’ll just stick with my LP’s next time….

  • Still has the magic

by Gariella on 11/18/09Ferguson Center for the Arts Concert Hall - Newport NewsRating: 5 out of 5

Herb played for almost two hours without an intermission. Most of the songs were an intermingling of brazilian sambas and standards from the likes of Cole Porter and Ira Gershwin along with an original song written by the piano player. Lani Hall's vocals were clear and and had their own spin. The musicians were top notch and included a bass player, drummer/percussionist and an amazing piano player. Herb invited the audience to ask questions between the songs and was quite humorous in his answers. This is a once in a lifetime chance to see to see a great American artist because Herb is pushing 65. The horn was very reconizable in all the songs but if you're looking to hear songs from the Tijuana Brass you will be disappointed, this was better.

  • A pleasant evening

by KMWH on 11/2/09Ferguson Center for the Arts Concert Hall - Newport NewsRating: 3 out of 5

The sound needed to be adjusted to better hear the vocals, which at some times were overpowered by the (excellent) musicians. I really enjoyed the casual approach and the banter between Herb and Lani and the musicians as well as the interaction with the audience. It made for a more intimate performance. The variety of tunes was very good, though I do wish he'd played a bit more of the old favorites from the Tijuana Brass era.

  • Very smooth Jazz!

I went thinking I wanted to hear Herb Alpert and not his wife, Lani Hall. However, she was the best part of the show! She has an incredible voice and clear diction. The drums were too loud. (I am a drummer and thought I would never complain about that! Somebody else in the audience even told Herb the bass drum was too loud.) I had hoped Herb would have played one of his old hits. But he did not. His new music is very relaxing and pleasant.

  • Still can make love to that trumpett!

by herblover on 11/1/09Ferguson Center for the Arts Concert Hall - Newport NewsRating: 4 out of 5

A little disappointed Mr. Albert didn't play more of his enchanting songs from the past. His wife can really sing and was entertaining along with his band. I brought my mom who has waited at least 38 years to see Herb Albert and she really wanted to hear his big hits. All in all a great evening. Thanks for coming back to Newport News.

  • evening of distraction

by etruefan on 10/31/09Ferguson Center for the Arts Concert Hall - Newport NewsRating: 4 out of 5

Delightful performance by Herb Alpert who played his trumpet like an angel. Enjoyed the very tender moment he and his wife Lani Hall shared during the show. Lani Hall had a slow start with some song which were too large for her voice. However, toward the end of the performance she rallied with enchanting version of "Black Magic". Overall any opportunity to see the Legendary Herb Alpert is worth it!

Love Herb Alpert....wished he would have played more HA and the TJB music....

  • Herb Albert showcases his wife

by CNUFCfan on 10/31/09Ferguson Center for the Arts Concert Hall - Newport NewsRating: 4 out of 5

Herb Albert plays the trumpet exceedingly well and Lani Hall is a very good singer. However, after saying that I was disappointed that he did not play any of the songs that made him so famous. All the songs were from their new jazz album which was not mentioned in the advertisement. If he had only played a few of the songs from 40 years ago, it would have been a perfect performance.

  • Couple was great!

by jazzieR on 10/30/09Ferguson Center for the Arts Concert Hall - Newport NewsRating: 4 out of 5

I love Herb Albert and was anxious to see the show. I've never heard Lani Hall before and very pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed her performance. The whole ensemble was good. Although I am a fan of the T. Brass and Pop music era, my son and I really enjoyed the informal setting and the music that has a latino influence. I would definitely recommend this show to all Albert fans.

  • Herb Alpert & Lani Hall Incredible!

by Trpter on 10/30/09Ferguson Center for the Arts Concert Hall - Newport NewsRating: 5 out of 5

If you like Brazilian jazz this event is a must see. These world class musicians put on a show that is as toe tappingly fun as it is sophisticated and cool. Legendary trumpeter and music icon Herb Alpert and his Grammy Award winning wife Lani Hall are an incredible pairing.

Excellent show. My 22 year old daughter and I really enjoyed it. My husband was disappointed that he wasn't available to attend. We are big fans of Herb.

  • Better than hoped for

Herb Albert has been a favorite for over 35 years. This concert was amazing.

  • I was disappointed

by DSanders16 on 10/30/09Ferguson Center for the Arts Concert Hall - Newport NewsRating: 3 out of 5

I was looking forward to more comtemporary selections from the 1990's. I know his wife shared the concert with him, but she seem to control the selections and performed more songs than needed. When he asked the audience what did they want to hear, his wife would change it to meet her needs. They even had to talk about it. I was truly disappointed because we haven't seen Herb in so long. He wife also sang in Brazlian and I didn't know what she was saying. She seems very controlling and I was ready to leave. I hope he changes his tours in the future and be more Herb Albert we wanted to see him Blow that Horn. I wanted to hear North on South Street and I wanted Herb Albert to blow that Horn and he didnt,One lady called out "PLAY RISE" I called out ROTATION. We got nothing new. I was not impressed with his Wife's singing. Sorry folks.

  • great jazz

by lamusica on 10/30/09Ferguson Center for the Arts Concert Hall - Newport NewsRating: 4 out of 5

Very informal and warm performance. Lani Hall was great and of course Herb Alpert was wonderful! He was able to make a whole auditorium full of people feel like we were in a small club and jammin'. His three musicians are terrific. All in all a great evening!

  • Herb & Lani are aesthetically and musically awesom

by MammaRose on 10/30/09Ferguson Center for the Arts Concert Hall - Newport NewsRating: 5 out of 5

Herb & Lani are aesthetically and musically awesome and the blending of her voice and his music made for a night of unforgettable magic. I loved the new twist to old tunes the concert was jazzy and edgy with enough sexy sizzle to be spicy making for a wonderful and fun time for all. Thank you Herb & Lani for a wonderful unforgettable performance. Your Virginia fans George & Kathy Rose

  • Herb Albert and Lani Hall --amazing entertainers!

This show was really worth going to and Herb Albert was especially open in answering questions from the audience.

  • Delightful evening

by Clarkes on 10/30/09Ferguson Center for the Arts Concert Hall - Newport NewsRating: 5 out of 5

This was a warm, charming, wonderfully entertaining time with veteran artists who know how to engage an audience. Herb Alpert and Lani Hall are magic together -- to say nothing of the other musicians who were superb performers solo but phenomenal together. Just wish the evening had lasted longer.

  • No Tijuana Brass

by FanaticalJazz on 10/30/09Ferguson Center for the Arts Concert Hall - Newport NewsRating: 4 out of 5

A fine Jazz performance from seasoned professionals. They are accompanied by just a piano, bass, and drums. Playing mostly a combination of Jazz standards and Bossa Nova numbers, their improvisation provides a fresh interpretation of familiar material. Lani Hall is still a stellar Jazz vocalist with technique on par with anyone performing today. Herb is melodic and wonderfully understated. The ensemble is tight and has obviously been playing together for years. On the downside, most of their songs have a similar laid-back vibe. They could use a few raucous songs to keep it exciting and engaging. A lead guitarist would help in that area. And I may be bias, but Bossa Nova without a saxophone leaves me wanting. Don't come expecting to hear The Lonely Bull or Tijuana Taxi. But if you love Jazz, you'll leave satisfied.
