  • Spontaneous Event

by HAFan on 10/30/09Ferguson Center for the Arts Concert Hall - Newport NewsRating: 5 out of 5

I have been a supporter of Herb Alpert and Lani Hall since the late sixties. Herb's playing and Lani's voice is as strong as ever. The give and take between Herb, Lani and the trio was awesome. You could tell that all the artists were having fun. Jazz is primarily a conversation and there was plently of creative dialogue taking place last night. The painted backdrop by Herb added to the warmth and vibrance of the musical experience.

  • sure missed the Tijuana Brass

by vbrs1445 on 10/30/09Ferguson Center for the Arts Concert Hall - Newport NewsRating: 2 out of 5

As life long fans of HA & the TB, my husband, parents and I were supremely disappointed in the concert. With the focus being on Lani, who is quite talented, and not on Herb's traditional music, we felt robbed. We understand an artist's desire to try new songs and expected a few, but for not a single 'traditional' HA song to be played blindsided us. To have paid that much money for 4th row seats, we could have stayed home with the 'smooth jazz' music channel on and paid for cable for months. If they had just billed it as "Lani Hall songs with Herb playing backup brass" we would have understood and saved ourselves the aggravation of the $6 wine, chilly theater, and tunnel traffic.

  • Jazz, Latin, but no Tijuana

by TommyR2 on 10/30/09Ferguson Center for the Arts Concert Hall - Newport NewsRating: 3 out of 5

Talented duo serving up a new sound comprised mostly of Latina and Jazz. But with an audience full of grey hair a couple of Tijuana oldies would have been welcomed and wouldn't have interfered with their artistic direction.

  • Herb Alpert and Lani Hall was fantastic!

Really enjoyed the show. A good mix of oldies and Latin music. Backup band outstanding. Herb and Lani were very comfortable on stage and made you feel as if you were part of a private show.

  • Herb & Lani, Class Act and Love Story

by tennispsychologist on 10/30/09Ferguson Center for the Arts Concert Hall - Newport NewsRating: 5 out of 5

My wife and I just attended the Herb Alpert/Lani Hall concert. We sat in the second row and must say, as a musician, it was terrific. The music was tight, laid back, and sophisticated. Mixed in was there own down to earth solid marriage of 36 years. This concert is a must see for old and young, married and single. Even your kids should seethem. Truly nice people and great musicians. The interaction with the audience was wonderful. A night to be remembered. Many Thanks Herb and Lani!

The opening set with Lani, Herb, Bill Cantos, Hussein Jiffrey, & Mike Shapiro was absolutely burning! Fifty minutes of sparkle, high energy and emotion, beautiful standards played in wonderfully unique ways. Superb! The following conversation was enjoyable, interesting, and presented an intimate view of a very special, creative, and loving couple. Overall, an inspiring evening of music and sharing.
