About

Brilliantly innovative, heartbreaking, and wickedly funny, HEDWIG AND THE ANGRY INCH is the landmark American musical by John Cameron Mitchell and Stephen Trask that is “groundbreaking and undoubtedly ahead of its time” (Entertainment Weekly). This genre-bending, fourth-wall-smashing musical sensation, with a pulsing score and electrifying performances, tells the story of one of the most unique characters to ever hit the stage.

Directed by Tony Award winner Michael Mayer (Spring Awakening) and winner of four 2014 Tony Awards including Best Musical Revival, HEDWIG AND THE ANGRY INCH played to record-breaking sell-out crowds on Broadway and promises to take the country by storm with what Time Magazine proclaims is “the most exciting rock score written for the theatre since, oh, ever!”

    Supremely Impressed!

by yoshi921 on 2/7/17DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - Durham

Had seen the movie...my b-day and nothing else to do. Had no idea that it was interactive and that the editing really did a huge amount of justice to the original. loved it!!! Brilliant set as well as musical and vocal performances!

Not what I was expecting... but

by bowsi3 on 2/7/17DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - Durham

Very entertaining. I enjoyed the music; this dude can really sing! However, the storyline was a bit muddled and confusing. The entire show was a monologue that seemed to be more a stream of consciousness than the weaving of a cohesive tale.

In some ways I think I liked the play better than the movie. Simple storytelling with great music. I loved it!

Hedwig--Great performance of a mediocre piece

by dogmadic on 2/7/17DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - Durham

Glad that I read a synopsis ahead of time or I wouldn't have understood what was going on at all. Having read some of the other reviews, I was concerned that I would find the music to be too loud. I didn't. But I do think they could have done some better sound mixing bringing out the lyrics a bit better. I was sitting in the second row and still missed a number of stretches of the songs. The set also made no sense that I could tell. The "plot" was weird and under developed. It was just pretty odd all the way around. I have no complaints related to the performance. All six performers were fine, particularly the two leads. It just was a really dumb piece and I don't normally mind weirdness. I can't remember the last time I sat in a live performance and started trying to see my watch less than halfway through.

    Life changing.

by DurhamBro on 2/7/17DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - Durham

I mean, wow. The incredible music is just a small part of what makes this show so special. The Hedwig character is so rich with contradiction: Male but female. Sad but optimistic. Her hidden desires make for catchy but deep rock songs. You can see her story through her telling of it. For anyone who ever felt like they're living a double-life, even in the most casual sense, this is a must-experience show.

    Experience of a Lifetime

by RRaptor on 2/6/17DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - Durham

Had been looking forward to seeing this show live for more than a year now. Hedwig absolutely outperformed any show I'd ever seen. Completely exceeded expectations! I will always remember this show.

    astounding performance by Morton

by Ballewjay on 2/6/17DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - Durham

I love the movie and was curious how such a small cast working with a single set could capture the story. Euan Morton and his band did that along with putting us in the middle of an amazing rock concert. No home listening can equal this experience! I'm sure having a star like Neil P Harris boosted interest on Broadway but Morton's singing was better. More powerful. More emotional. With most musicals you just sit back and enjoy. Hedwig pulls you into the experience like nothing else.

    Incredible

by SteveTravis on 2/6/17DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - Durham

My fear was the stage presentation woud not live up to the movie. My fears were unfounded. Stage is a completely different medium. I spent the whole time awestruck fighting urge to jump up dancing and singing along. I feel for those who thought this was about Hedwig the Owl.

Good Production -- But Needs More Umph

by kwixote on 2/6/17DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - Durham

The band is tight -- consummate musicians all -- the songs are decent and the two leads are great singers. The sets and special effects are great. However, I was not deeply satisfied with the show. Part of the reason has to do with the way the show is written: it's basically a one-man show that gets its energy from Hedwig's bitchiness, but also tries to bring in a bit of pathos that it doesn't quite earn. As a result, you need a lead actor who can really amp up the bitchiness -- play with it, make it his/her own in a fun and flexible way. But while the actor playing Hedwig was athletic, earnest and engaged, he just didn't seem to invest much emotional energy into the part, and seemed to replace bitchiness at times with mere shock value. There were multiple opportunities for him to stop a beat, and/or do a meaningful glance, and/or elongate a word and/or improvise -- but the actor while very competent never rose to that challenge.

Hedwig and the Angry Inch - AWESOME!

by JPHeckman on 2/6/17DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - Durham

I have seen this show in NYC, San Francisco and now Raleigh-Durham and every time I see the show I fall more and more in love with the character Hedwig. The touring show is amazing as well and every time the show is injected with new topical material that makes you laugh! Recommended 10 times over to anyone who enjoys the theater!

    Hedwig not bad not great

by hsjduke73 on 2/5/17DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - Durham

The music was good the story line average. The plot did not really engage me. Although there was character development it was rather superficial. The lyrics to the songs were often difficult to hear. I found myself anxious for it to be over. The story was a bit tedious

    Funny storytelling with great singing!

by jzief128 on 2/4/17DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - Durham

I didn't realize coming in that it was essentially a one person show. However, the storytelling made it seem like there were so many more characters on stage. Funny, sad, charming, and weird all at the same time. And the singing was great!

    Awesome, Modern Rock Experience

by MizzouTiger6 on 2/1/17Peabody Opera House - St. Louis

Anyone who loves Hedwig or loves modern day musicals should see this musical. I own the movie, have seen it before live, and each time its a little different, but amazing. The theatrics really shined in this performance. I saw a smaller production before and the acting was amazing, but didn't have as large of a budget, which made this different (but good).

What a great show. Only thing is that the music drowned out some of the lyrics.
