About Harlem Gospel Choir

Harlem Gospel Choir on Tour

Raise your hands and praise the Lord when the Harlem Gospel Choir comes to town. An internationally renowned ensemble known for big voices and an even bigger spirit "inspired by God to be even more inspired," Harlem Gospel Choir packs all the energy of a mass choir into a nine-piece ensemble that includes two roof-raising contraltos and four titanic tenors. Expect an energetic night of hand-clapping, foot-stomping excitement as the choir performs a repertoire that includes gospel hits both old and new, traditional music and the occasional pop hit. The choir has toured extensively across the United States and abroad, becoming the first American gospel group to perform in Australia, New Zealand, China, Russia, Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Serbia, Slovenia, Samoa, Thailand, Burma and Morocco. They have performed for three Presidents (Barack Obama, Jimmy Carter and Nelson Mandela), two Popes (John Paul II and Benedict XVI) and the United Nations General Assembly. And they have recorded with Keith Richards, the Chieftains and Trace Adkins, among many others.

About Harlem Gospel Choir

Entertainment-industry veteran Allen Bailey formed Harlem Gospel Choir on January 15, 1986, which also happens to be Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday. The choir's nine-piece touring groups, accompanied by two instrumentalists on drums and keyboards, draw from a pool of some 40 members. They divide and conquer by touring the world while maintaining an all-you-can-eat Sunday-brunch residency at Sony Hall in Manhattan's Times Square. A typical show includes Kurt Carr's "In the Sanctuary," Israel Houghton's "You Are Good" and Kirk Franklin's high-octane "Looking for You," along with gospel standards such as "Oh Happy Day" and "Amazing Grace." The choir also does astounding things with Beyoncé's "Halo" and traditional numbers such as "When the Saints Go Marching In" and "Every Time I Feel the Spirit." As Allen Bailey modestly told Ohio State University's The Lantern about this tuneful spiritual vessel, "We only have one superstar in this group and that's Jesus Christ, superstar."

    fun, Fun, FUN!

by Halkid2 on 1/31/18B.B. King Blues Club & Grill - New York

The Harlem Gospel Choir put in a great show, full of energy and dancing. Lots of audience participation and more energy than I expected. Food was adequate, though not exceptional.

The food was good, the atmosphere was great, the songs were good but they need better leads. It was a good experience but it could have been better.

    Excellent singing in unpleasant surroundings

by Gussikins on 1/10/18B.B. King Blues Club & Grill - New York

The singing was superb. But boy oh boy! The venue is a run down basement club on 42nd Ave. and the buffet is simple unedibly substandard. Everyone was very polite though.

Have not seen my childhood friend in over 40 years what a way to bond again. The show was so real because I felt the presence of God. They interact with the audience and it was so electrifying I am still in awe what a show

Choir great but venue & food very disappointing

by LMAC10 on 9/6/17B.B. King Blues Club & Grill - New York

The choir was great and very entertaining but were only on the stage for an hour. The venue needs a revamp (sticky carpets etc)! Staff were unorganised and didn't seem to know what was happening. The start time on the ticket was 1.30pm however when we arrived about 1.20pm the buffet was already open and there was a massive queue. The show started at 1.30pm and the lights were turned off so everyone was unable to see what was on the buffet. Food was mediocre. I would recommend going to see a broadway show instead!

    Polished but not quite there

by BookerBu on 8/9/17B.B. King Blues Club & Grill - New York

Went to see the HGC in NY with my family, 4 in total. Was really looking forward to this as major fan of gospel music. The opening half was really strong, great singers and performers. However, the 2nd half was very flat and felt as though the Choir was simply filling in the time. Overall, this was very expensive for what was ultimately delivered. I was initially happy to pay the price in expectation of a truly rousing and moving show, and one which I hoped would have a great impression on my family . Unfortunately, I was happy to see it end after an hour as it clearly went down hill after a few opening songs, a real shame - particularly for the brand that is the Harlem Gospel Choir.

    Good Time

by Jen8892 on 7/5/17B.B. King Blues Club & Grill - New York

Harlem Gospel Choir is full of amazing voices. They sang Prince and MJ songs so well and did them justice. They sang with soul and passion. They did more MJ songs than Prince. (That might be an issue for some.)The Prince songs they did was "I Would Die 4 U" ,"I Wanna Be Your Lover", "Adore",Nothing Compares 2 U , "Diamonds and Pearls", and ended the show with "Purple Rain". They stayed after the show to greet fans and to autograph their cd.My favorite moments is when they have a dance contest of five women who dance their little hearts out to "I wanna Be Your Lover" and went they sang "Purple Rain" at the end.

Good entertainment but high drink prices

by jordantps on 7/5/17B.B. King Blues Club & Grill - New York

Great harmony from very good singers. Only remark is that we expected that more popular songs from both Prince and Michael would be in the list. Also the group took and excessively long break between the first and the second (and final) part of the show.

    Great Gospel, bad everything else

by MisterSB on 6/7/17B.B. King Blues Club & Grill - New York

The ticket price of course ended up being $123 and at the end of the show we were presented a bill for tax and gratuity, another $20. The show ended up being $143 for two people. Why am I complaining...the food was in editable and the service poor at best. There were no assigned seats so get there early, be prepared to fend for your self in general at this show. You are on your own. Shabby, dated venue with no production quality to the show...the choir was amazing but just six performers. The band was great also...all professionals.

Concert was great - Brunch was awful

    by JCA1974 on 5/27/17Howard Theatre - Washington

Concert of the Harlem Gospel Choir would deserve a 4-5 star review. The singers were great and entertaining. The problem came from the Mother's Day special brunch. It was awful and spoiled the experience. We were a party of 5 and only 3 of us got some food during the concert. My mother and I got nothing despite we asked our waiter a couple of times. After two hours, we finally got some food that was not what we had ordered, but the waiter told us that was the only thing that was available. Another group got the same issue. Would definitely not go again to that kind of event. I would prefer a concert only option and would do the brunch at a real restaurant before or after the concert.
