  • Simply Marvelous

    by consumer1 on 12/21/10Clowes Memorial Hall - IndianapolisRating: 5 out of 5

The ISO once again did not fail to show what it is made of. The display of talent in vocals and instrument were spectacular. Handel would find himself proud if he could only hear his peice performed as it was on Saturday. I took someone as a Chrismas present to her and she was very pleased.

  • Pretty good

    by Kent46123 on 12/21/10Clowes Memorial Hall - IndianapolisRating: 3 out of 5

Soprano soloist was fantastic -- good strength, range, breathing, dynamics -- a perfect performance. Alto soloist was beautiful, but voice was weaker and she had to catch breaths where normally you don't hear this voice taking breaths. Tenor was also weak in Part 1 but gained confidence (?) and did better in the rest of the oratorio. Bass soloist was strong, deep, and powerful. Overall, an excellent job, but his intonation on "Thus saith the Lord" was a little sloppy. Choir did a wonderful job, with excellent balance, articulation, and intonation. ISO was superb, as always. Trumpets in the opera box were a nice surprise.

  • A Great Way To Start The Season

by Musicmike on 12/21/10Clowes Memorial Hall - IndianapolisRating: 5 out of 5

A fantastic performance........outstanding orchestra and choir with wonderful soloists. And you could actually hear the harpsichord! This was a great way to kick-off the holiday season!

  • technically dispassionate

by pastommy on 12/21/10Clowes Memorial Hall - IndianapolisRating: 2 out of 5

This performance was perhaps technically interesting and creative in parts, but overall was void of passion. You cannot perform Messiah without passion and convey the message of the piece. The tempo was so fast the musicians were obviously stretched to the limit and it made the words of the music seem secondary. It was the first performance of Messiah I have attended in which I was never moved. Why have a 150 or so voice choir when their power is rarely needed?

The sound could have been louder. We couldnt hear the soloist very well

The ISO did a fantastic job with this event this year! The soloists were great and the music was stunning.

  • Handels Messiah

by pafrog on 12/21/10Clowes Memorial Hall - IndianapolisRating: 5 out of 5

Great show, soloists were all exceptional, orchestra and choir were great, not a bad seat in the house, acoustics were superior in every way. I would go again in a heartbeat.

  • Handel's Messiah

    by 9870 on 12/13/10Fox Cities PAC - AppletonRating: 4 out of 5

The performance was great. However, read my comment below. Our seats were in the first row, left of center. There were flowers set on the stage directly in front of us and we could not see most of the performers. We were very, very disappointed after paying a premium price for the seats. The best seats would have been about mid-way back in the "Orch" section. But, TICKETMASTER does offer a method to pick and choose your seats.

The performance of Messiah by the Indianapolis Symphony & Choir was outstanding!

The performance was incredible. The orchestra was perfect.

I recommend sitting as close to the front as possible. Sitting 2nd row center was worth the $107 b/c it felt like the orchestra and singers were performing just for me. My one complaint is that it should max. out at 2 hours in length.

  • Messiah

by Pencilneck on 12/21/09Clowes Memorial Hall - IndianapolisRating: 3 out of 5

The Indianapolis symphony and chorus were wonderful. The soloists distracted from an otherwise excellent performance. By the third part of the performance, I had had more than enough of the soloists and was ready to call it an evening.

Wonderful! It was like a recording! The music just washed over us.

  • The Messiah was great!

    by 2948 on 12/21/09Clowes Memorial Hall - IndianapolisRating: 5 out of 5

I thoroughly enjoyed the production and the soloists were terrific! The strings in the orchestra were exceptional and the choir perfect for this music. I recommend this as the best Christmas program for everyone!

  • Mechanical Messiah

by MrBW on 12/21/09Clowes Memorial Hall - IndianapolisRating: 3 out of 5

Choir started out uncertainly but warmed to the task once it got through the early difficult pieces. Final rendition of "Worthy" was its best effort. Orchestra was solid as usual. Soprano sparkled, other soloists were technically on their game but voices were not able to fill a venue as large as Clowes. We wanted a "goosebump" performance for this special event, and it never happened.

  • Conductor needed to chill!

by enginindy on 12/21/09Clowes Memorial Hall - IndianapolisRating: 3 out of 5

While the concert in 2008 was absolutely wonderful, I think the conductor this year was late for his next concert. I have never heard the Messiah played so fast! There were several times when part of the orchestra was having difficulty keeping up with the pace. Conductor also had the choir be so staccato at times that it upset the whole flow of the piece. Overall, the ISO and ISC did a wounderful job - except when selecting a guest conductor.

  • Handel's Messiah - a glimpse of heaven

    by DPE61 on 12/21/09Clowes Memorial Hall - IndianapolisRating: 5 out of 5

This is my second time to see Handel's Messiah live in Indianapolis and I walk away with a tremendous appreciation for this magnificent work but a greater and more meaningful sense of the majesty of God. This whole presentation is a worship service to give glory to God and his way of salvation through Jesus Christ. The glorious music brings to life the truth of the words of Scripture that is unique and inspiring. I plan to go every year that the Messiah is presented in Indianapolis.

  • Handel's Messiah was wonderful!

    by 110queen on 12/20/09Clowes Memorial Hall - IndianapolisRating: 5 out of 5

I was impressed with the Symphonic Choir. Very balanced. Their sound was unbelievable! I thought the conductor's interpretation was good and Handel would have approved.

  • Magnificant Messiah

by ChicaFluta on 12/20/09Clowes Memorial Hall - IndianapolisRating: 5 out of 5

This was an amazing concert! The only downside was the ushers sat behind us during the show and they were very noisy. Rather disappointing. Despite that distraction, we enjoyed the music immensely.
