Really an outstanding show. We highly recommend it.
I had not seen this show before, and was surprised as the story unfolded. The cast was uniformly very good, as was the orchestra.
I did not expect such a 5 star performance . Everyone exceeded my expectations !! The singing was amazing. The theatre was small And cozy . Not a bad seat anywhere. Should be on broadway !!
All aspects of the production were excellent. Rose was exceptional! The neighborhood is great to explore and parking is not a problem.
A talented cast playing a classic! Rose has a vibrant voice, and is not to be missed. Both June and Louise do a commendable performance in support. Louise's transition from quiet, forgotten daughter to Gypsy is well done.
This was the first time I've seen Gypsy and it was amazing. I would go back and see it again.
Only a few times in the past ten years have we left a play at intermission. This was one of them. Primary reason was that we could not take the singing of the actor playing Mama Rose, or the child playing the "star." Dancing was forgettable. Plot is quite depressing so without better performances just did not seem worth staying.
This play was fabulous from beginning to end! We especially loved the kids, and their performances. I'm recommending this play to everyone---only a couple of weeks left!
First time seeing the play....lead was amazing. Great experience.
They don't call it the Great American Musical for nothin', and Signature delivers a superb production. The lush overture -- arguably one of the best ever written -- is delivered by a small but first rate band. Sheri Edelen is feisty, conniving, and powerful as Rose and belts the show's signature songs with conviction and skill. The young cast is outstanding, notably Ellen Roberts in the important role of young Louise. The only faults in this production are minor. Though she performs well, Nicole Mangi just looks too mature for the role of June, who is supposed to be 16 at her oldest. Maria Rizzi's interpretation of the teenage Louise sometimes doesn't sell-- she is supposed to be nervous and naive, but comes as a caricature.
Sherri Edelen gives an intense, emotional, fully-realized, and riveting performance as Rose, the steam engine that drives this production of "Gypsy." Having seen a number of different productions of the show, I was more emotionally affected by her "Rose's Turn" than I have ever been before. The supporting cast is strong, especially Mitchell Hebert as Herbie, and the physical production is well-realized, with few exceptions.
Not knowing a lot about the theme of GYPSY, both of us were very pleasantly surprised. The music was great, the acting pretty solid, and the show itself was interesting. In every way, we enjoyed ourselves and the show.
An excellent production. Ms Edelman gave a superb performance as Mama Rose!
My wife and I really enjoyed the show. Good acting, great singing and even a super dance routine. Signature Theater is a great venue, easy to get to, close by free parking, safe and great service.
A terrific performance, starting with Sherree Edelin, and throughout the cast.
It just doesn't get any better than this. As someone who has seen numerous versions of "Gypsy," I can't even begin to describe how outstanding this performance is. Lead character (stage mother) Rose belts out a tune with all the power of role-creator Ethel Merman -- but without the irritation. The kids are all phenomenal, with burly blond Baby June stealing extra, unsolicited bows with the energetic enthusiasm of a real trooper. And the title character, who morphs into Gypsy Rose Lee, carries us through bittersweet moments ("Little Lamb"), harsh realities (with her Toreadorables), and ultimately her smooth, sexy moves as a classy stripper. Just go -- IF you can get a ticket!
The energy, talent and staging of this show was fantastic! Everything about it was just great!
I first saw Gypsy, the movie, as a kid. My first live performance was the production starring Tyne Daly…the next time was with Patty Lupone and Laura Beanti. I loved all three productions. I was equally impressed with Signature's production of Gypsy. The staging was wonderful and the ease of transitions from scene to scene was so very smooth. The acting was outstanding and Sherri Edelen's performance was incredibly touching. She moved me to tears more than once. In particular Rose's Turn and the final scene between Rose and Louise was so perfectly done. AND…Mazeppa, Electra and Tessie Tura were perfectly cast! Thank you for a great evening
I invited my cousin who was visiting from California to join me for the December 26 performance of Gypsy. We both enjoyed the show -- wonderful songs, dancing, and acting. In particular, Sherri Edelen gave a memorably emotional performance as mother Rose and Maria Rizzo was amazing as Louise. My cousin had just been in New York and saw "Annie" on Broadway, but said she enjoyed "Gypsy" more because of the intimacy of the theate, quality of the acting, and our excellent up-close seating. We enjoyed the live orchestra too.
