by redbeauty17 on 8/16/13Hollywood Bowl - HollywoodDudamel and the gorgeous Requim were truly a magical combo, spoiled only by the person next to me who insisted upon eating her entire crackly/crinkly wrapped picnic during one of the finest performances of this masterpiece.
Rating: 1 out of 5 Insufferable video screens
by Anonymous on 8/16/13Hollywood Bowl - HollywoodConcert was great, but for those horrific video screens - way too big, too bright, with often irrelevant images. But more to the point, they should definitely be removed, as they were a disruption of the performance, not merely a distraction, effectively interfering with the music and totally destroying the unique setting and ambiance of the Bowl. I've been attending concerts at the Bowl for decades, but may not return. Whoever thought of this should have his or her career redirected to video games. Whoever wants to see closely can use binoculars, and can thereby focus on what's relevant to him or her without disturbing if not destroying the experience for other audience members.
Rating: 4 out of 5 Dudamel brings it to top level
by buzz981 on 8/16/13Hollywood Bowl - HollywoodDudamel conducted with such understanding and enthusiasm, he was singing along. I wish they could keep planes from flying over during the performance. Also, the video trons were screwy.
Rating: 5 out of 5 Unbelievable
by JLouise6 on 8/16/13Hollywood Bowl - HollywoodThe whole experience was perfect aside from the sound of the cricket sitting next to me. That bug has great musical taste! Really love Verdi's requiem and enjoyed the close up camera shots of the soloists and conductor, Dudamel. The rating is for the performance and not the seats or parking, both of which left much to be desired.
Rating: 5 out of 5 A wonderful evening
by Anonymous on 8/16/13Hollywood Bowl - HollywoodSeen Dudamel's hands move to direct this concert was like a dream. His hands flowed as the music in the air. The performance of the orchestra, chorus and solos were outstanding. I felt as if every soul in the Bowl was in communion with the Requiem. Too bad no one could stop the helicopters that intruded in our magical night.
Rating: 4 out of 5by Optum on 8/16/13Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood Although the concert musically was well performed and Dudamel's conducting from memory was impressive, the video was distracting enough to seriously disturb the flow of the concert. It appeared that the video team had not prepared or rehearsed their shots and that their equipment was not functioning properly. There were overly long shots of Dudamel from the upstage cam while soloists and instrumental features went by without attention. Three times the screens went bright white which audibly startled the audience, and other shots were taken which had no relevance. The video team that regularly does the IMAG at the Bowl is far superior to the special group brought in to film this event.
Rating: 5 out of 5 Dudamel and Verdi thrilling
by Jozzle on 8/16/13Hollywood Bowl - HollywoodThe evening was refreshingly cool, the bowl a lovely outdoor experience. All our park and ride went smoothly and the information booth gave us an easy way for two old people to get to their seats. An excellent setting: Dudamel was fantastic and the Verdi went magnificently, those thrilling passionate passages played so perfectly. The chorus was equal to that big work and so were the soloists. The soprano was especially exquisite. The filming looked like amateur night.
Rating: 5 out of 5 Thanks to the Bowl managment!

Rating: 1 out of 5 Aida
by hungryforagreatperf on 8/14/13Hollywood Bowl - HollywoodDisappointing. The singers stood there like deers caught in head-lights; motionless. Utterly boring to watch. The Aida was finessing to much through the opera when powerful singing was needed. And began losing her voice somewhat towards the end of the opera as evidenced by ungrounded high notes. The Amneris slowed the temple throughout the evening, sang the entire role like the "B" section of a Bellini aria and her singing lacked "bite" that is typical of Verdian mezzo-sopranos. She could have been singing lieder. Oh my . . . Dudamel's conducting: marvelous mostly when not accompanying the singers. He did an excellent job following the singers as they messed around with the tempi.
Rating: 5 out of 5 AIDA
by Lintu on 8/14/13Hollywood Bowl - HollywoodWhat an amazing evening! I was surrounded by 3 good friends, from different walks of life, and from different continents! To start the beautiful evening, we had a picnic, luckily we were able to get a table in one of the picnic areas. And the performance was excellent! What a talent both Liudmyla Monastyrska and Jorge de Leon have! And what a destiny! I enjoyed Gustavo Dudamel's conducting--of course! Who could do it better?! But I was amazed by the above mentioned lovers: Aida and Radames. So tragic, yet so beautiful. I am only hoping that the same will repeat next summer!!

Rating: 5 out of 5 dudamel's aida was fantastic
by gwhepner on 8/14/13Hollywood Bowl - HollywoodDudamel's Aida was absolutely fantastic, with one except. Jorge de Leon was stiff and implausible and his voice was not really pleasing. In the presence of the other stars he let the show down, and I hope we will not have to hear him again in LA.
Rating: 3 out of 5 The Grateful Dead Experience!
by SoCalSouthpaw on 8/14/13Hollywood Bowl - HollywoodLike cover bands that portray musicians who no longer perform (e.g. Sinatra, Elvis, the Fab Four), I should have noticed from the title that the evening was going to be about the music of Aida, not the real thing. All the men wore a white tux. The women wore evening gowns. The only thing Egyptian about the night was my food. There was no pageantry or spectacle or costuming or dance or chariots or elephants. Itunes and my home sound system would have been just as good, and it wouldn't have cost me $18 to park my car.
