BROADWAY’S FUNNIEST NEW MUSICAL

“SO MUCH FUN IT SHOULD BE ILLEGAL.”

– The Times of London

WINNER! BEST MUSICAL

2017 Olivier Award

Karma can be a funny thing. So when a big-city weatherman gets stuck in small-town America, laughter is in the forecast. With his unique look on life, Phil Connors is always ready with a one-liner or clever quip about the all-too cheery people of Punxsutawney. But one extraordinary day is about to show Phil that maybe the joke is really on him. Andy Karl stars in the role that won him the 2017 Olivier Award for Best Actor in the new Broadway musical that Entertainment Weekly calls, “a wonderfully inventive show, with dazzling energy, creativity, wit, and heart.”

    Groundhog Day: Very well done.

by nelslus on 9/8/17August Wilson Theatre - New York

I enjoyed the show even more than I expected. NOT a perfect show by any means. But, a wonderful cast led by Andy Karl, some excellent songs. And, IMO, not a bad seat in the house. Go before the show closes.

Clever show turns into wry morality play

by BVM3 on 9/8/17August Wilson Theatre - New York

At first, you're skeptical of another movie going through the musical factory but GROUNDHOG DAY surpasses its origins. The creators bring inventive fun to this production, you just marvel at the dazzling staging. Andy Karl gives a wonderful performance as do the rest of the cast. I hope the show tours after its B'way run so that others can enjoy it as much as I did.

    Funny, Fresh and Utterly Enjoyable

by jandar24 on 9/6/17August Wilson Theatre - New York

Coming in I wondered how anyone could reprise Bill Murray's portrayal of Phil Collins. Andy Karl is spectacular in the role and made it his own. I absolutely loved this production. The cast is superb - not least is Raymond Lee as Ralph - one of the locals who accompanies Phil on the truck ride down the railroad tracks. The only bit I had any objection to was the overuse of the townspeople song and dance number and lack of attention to Phil's personal evolution. In the unlikely event someone had never seen the movie they might be hard pressed to understand all the running around to do good works in the final scenes.

Don't know why this show is closing. It was excellent and Andy Carl was superb. What a talented actor. The whole cast was awesome and the score and staging was excellent. Wish the show would be around longer. It deserves a longer run. Two Thumbs Up!!!

    Great show

by IhrtNY on 9/5/17August Wilson Theatre - New York

It's all that and a bag of chips. This was my first Broadway show and was everything I hoped it would be. The acting and story are wonderful and the music was imaginative and fairly complex.

It's a shame this innovative musical isn't around longer. Good music, excellent cast, fun and true to the movie.

    One of my favorite shows

by rls1164 on 9/4/17August Wilson Theatre - New York

    Groundhog Day is an underappreciated gem of the theater season. The cast is amazing, and I always come out of the show incredibly moved. I highly recommend seeing it before it leaves!!;

    WHY is this closing???

by TommyTune69 on 8/31/17August Wilson Theatre - New York

FINALLY won the GROUNDHOG DAY THE MUSICAL lottery with only a few weeks to spare (the show closes Sept. 17th). Andy Karl should have won the Tony for Best Musical COMEDY actor but alas there is no such category so the more dramatic lead from "Dear Evan Hansen" ended up with the statuette. Tim Minchin proves even more versatile with his music/lyrics than he did with his previous Bdwy effort "Matilda" so this show should have a long life on tour (even South of the Mason-Dixon line thanks to a coupla country-inflected tunes from PA-based tuner).. Only thing that could have made this better (scored an Orchestra seat to boot) would have been to be sitting next to Stephanie Clark, LMT. Not sure how much of the staging will remain the same on tour as the show makes much use of a central turntable, which gives the game cast a lot of physical activity throughout the show. Even more amazing -- SPOILER ALERT -- are the "illusions' that make up a series of repetitions in the 2nd act, I'm talking 1st class David Copperfield-esque magic people!. 1st act shows off the chauvinistic aspects of the main character 'Phil' (not to be confused with the other one from Puxatawney) while 2nd act redeems him. Amazing show, I have NO IDEA why this is closing prematurely but they must have something BIG ready to bring into that theater (damn producers). Speaking of the August Wilson venue, best sightlines of ALL the Jujuamcyn's six theaters and the recent re-do expanded restrooms (a premium on Bdwy) tho they oddly put a large merchandise booth between the mens/ladies entryways. Nothing like the smell of piss while paying for a t-shirt??

    Groundhog Day is a Classic

by jenn328 on 8/29/17August Wilson Theatre - New York

This was my ninth time seeing the show and I have already bought my ticket for the tenth. Andy Karl and Barrett Doss lead an absolutely perfect cast through a journey that will make you laugh, cry and most importantly, think. This show deserved a much longer run that it will have and it is a shame it was not embraced more by the general public. Please go see this show before its September 17th finale...you won't regret it.

    Fantastic entertainment

by LCHCH on 8/29/17August Wilson Theatre - New York

Our expectations were not high for this show. We had not read reviews, other than positives about Andy Karl. We are beyond delighted with the show. The actors and music were great, and the set design was inspired. We recommended to friends and family to see it - though we are sad to hear it is closing soon, sad that Broadway can't sustain a good number of terrific shows.
