    An Epic Evening

by LOTR123 on 10/17/09DeVos Performance Hall - Grand Rapids

The LOTR Symphony at DeVos was simply epic. The whole evening was amazing from start to finish. I am so glad that the performance hall chose to put this event on. It was worth every penny spent. We drove from Indiana to see it and it did not disappoint. The music was breathtaking, and the players and singers were completely professional. The house was packed and the audience was transfixed from beginning to end. I would highly recommend this kind of event to others. I hope that the performance hall considers doing the Two Towers sometime soon!

    Need more projected live concerts!!

by ohhhdear on 10/17/09DeVos Performance Hall - Grand Rapids

Combining one of my favorite movies AND the GRSO + Choir... unbelievable experience. My LOTR fanatic friends were very impressed and the folks who read about it on our Facebook pages were jealous!! When will 'The Two Towers" be produced in Grand Rapids? I noticed in the playbill that it was performed at the Royal Albert Hall in London. GR is just as important as London!! What about the 2010 season? Also, the soprano in the shorter red dress who sang some of the lyrics was never acknowledged in the playbill. I felt very badly for her in the last song when she started singing and the orchestra had changed the key signature without much or any of a cue for her. To her credit, she caught on in just a few beats and was quite professional. Her voice was clear and soaring and very enjoyable even though it must have been a nerve-wracking and embarassing beginning for her. I would have been in tears. Her soaring clear high notes were just like the movie! The other vocalist was almost perfect, but she let her voice drop too low at the ending of each phrase and it was difficult to hear her over the orchestra.

    Lord of the rings. Inspiring!

by rolum on 10/17/09DeVos Performance Hall - Grand Rapids

The Grand Rapids Symphony and Chorus out did themselves from beginning to end in their production of Lord of the Rings. This was, without a doubt, the most inspired preformance I have ever witnessed in the DeVos hall. From the haunting chorus' to the beautiful solo's you couldn't help but be moved by this epic tale of underworld life and struggle. The Symphony and Chorus were in nearly perfect unison and timing throughout the entire concert. Anyone that attended this performance that didn't walk away with and appreation of the culture that is offered in the grand Rapids area should truly be felt sorry for. Of all the performances I have seen in this area this was by far the most bone chilling and entertaining I have ever been witness to.

One of the best performances I have seen. Very different for the symphony. The music and vocals were impressive.

    Unique and amazing

by trumpetplayer on 10/17/09DeVos Performance Hall - Grand Rapids

Went with a buddy of mine. We both love LOTR and this experience topped them all. The orchestra was spot on and relentless. The brass section stayed strong all the way to the final note. Chops of steel! The singer/soloists were impressive as well. I would recommend this experience to anyone. I hope the GR symphony makes this an annual event. Would love to hear other movies scores like this.

    Lord of the Rings Amazing

by Anonymous on 10/17/09DeVos Performance Hall - Grand Rapids

The performance was great. Often times I forgot that the music was live because it was right on target with the real movie. I did not like that parts of the movie were cut out however, I think that slightly ruined it because I kept noticing the missing parts instead of enjoying the performace.

G.R. Symphony and Chorus + LOTR = Amazing!

by onevoiceagain on 10/17/09DeVos Performance Hall - Grand Rapids

What an amazing event! Truly a once in a lifetime experience. Much better than any movie theatre could ever hope to produce! Talk about your surround sound! The musicians were fantastic, the soloists were fabulous and the timing was spot on. The conductor is truly a maestro. I'd definately recommend this to any and every one! I hope they do it again with the other two movies. It was incredible - thanks!

    LOR was awesome!!!!

by valley55 on 10/17/09DeVos Performance Hall - Grand Rapids

Wonderful performance. So well done I often forgot it was not the original soundtrack. The movie is one of the best, of course, and the music made it even better.

Loved it. There were a few glitches but that was to be expected at the rehearsal. People who I told about would have liked to come but it wasn't very well advertised. I liked the more casual atmosphere.

So hope they are doing it again next year! Had forgotten what a great movie this was but to have a live orchestra, choir and soloists along with it was amazing! Brought the kids and they actually loved it too!

    Lord of the Rings, Fantastic

by showbuzz on 10/16/09DeVos Performance Hall - Grand Rapids

This was the Rehearsal so it was laid back. But we saw then entire movie with the full compliment of music & chorus. Just a few very minor rehearsal bugs, but did not take away from the overall event.

    Awsome!

by Highwatch on 10/16/09DeVos Performance Hall - Grand Rapids

For a dress rehersal it was an incredibley good show. The movie is incredible on its own, but adding the live score made it even better. That one extra element brought it to an entire level. i only wish I had been able to get tickets to the actual show.

Lord of the Rings Dress Rehearsal Unbelievable!!

by rooms on 10/16/09DeVos Performance Hall - Grand Rapids

The performance was outstanding. The guest conductor has perfected his presentation of the movie and live symphony accompanyment to a higher art form. All the musicians and singers were " spot on". It was flawless and at times I had to remind myself it was live and not the recorded musical score. Can not wait to see his next performance of" The Two Towers". Bravo!!!

Fellowship of the Ring rehersal night was great

by Wingnut87 on 10/16/09DeVos Performance Hall - Grand Rapids

I was amazed to see the amount of orchestral participation in this show. Even more significant was the number of time that the chorus was singing. Watching the movie in a theatre never gives you that impression. The music all blends into the background, but greatly enhances the story. Grand Rapids Symphony and Choruses did a great job. The only flaw in the rehersal was the timing of the music and the last soloist was off and not done confidently.

    Wonderful show

by malskip on 10/16/09DeVos Performance Hall - Grand Rapids

While it was a dress rehearsal, the show was spectacular. At times I forgot that the symphony was actually playing because I was so engrossed in the show. While there were a few glitches (like awful sound feedback during intermission) it was a fantastic symphony performance. I would have like to attend the final show to see if the choir was louder and to have the soloist perform the entire song at the end (instead of an understudy). If I have an opportunity to see it again, I would skip the rehearsal and try to get tickets to the show.

    Fingers on Fire!

by Mareseatoats on 10/12/09Forest Hills Fine Arts Center - Grand Rapids

I took my 2 fiddle playing grandsons and they thouroughly enjoyed it as did I. Was really impressed with all the playing without music and the selections were difficult. I didn't know fingers could move that fast. Also, I usually go to the Pops so was delighted to see David L. lead.

Fiddles on Fire - fun, fun, fun

by Voyageur on 10/12/09Forest Hills Fine Arts Center - Grand Rapids

Fun, fun...My sister and I went to "Fiddles on Fire" in Grand Rapids this afternoon. A smorgesbord of violin and fiddle music, from "Hoedown" through Tchaikovski's Fourth with a detour through "Sweet Georgia Brown"... A delightful afternoon!
