About

Singer, songwriter, and musician Wally De Backer, a.k.a. Gotye, first appeared upon the Australian music scene in 2006 with his self-recorded album Like Drawing Blood – an effort that yielded his first local hit, “Hearts a Mess,” and won an AIR (Australian Independent Record) award. He also found success as part of the Australian trio The Basics. In 2011, however, Gotye would catapult to fame with the undeniably infectious song “Somebody That I Used to Know” (featuring New Zealand singer Kimbra) -- the video of which spread across the web like wildfire. Music fans worldwide took notice and, almost entirely on the merit of this one breakthrough hit, bought tickets and filled venues to see Gotye perform LIVE. A gifted drummer and percussionist as well as a vocalist with impressive range, Gotye’s often times understated but always innovative music -- a mix of quirky electronic sounds and acoustic rhythms -- evokes a mood both retro and modern. Songs like “Eyes Wide Open,” Easy Way Out,” and “State of the Art” take on new dimension during his concerts which feature De Backer on drums and various other instruments, and which utilize projected images that echo the striking visual artistry of Gotye’s music videos. Although his voice has often been compared to Peter Gabriel and Sting, his music is more inspired by Godley & Crème and DJ Shadow.

Loved the artist but rude crowd!

    by Lizzay85 on 10/13/12Woodlands Pavilion - Woodlands

I loved the performance of Gotye he put on an awesome performance and is very multi-talented .. But unfortunantly Houston TX (The Woodlands) made it extremely embarrassing and i felt ashamed to even be apart of this crowd when people were talking very loud while the performance was going on. Then getting up and leaving after his number one hit song in America was played. Really people? if you couldent hang and you were getting bored because the other songs didn't appeal to you then wth would you go and spoil it for others? I think the employees could have done a better job in escorting ignorant people out of there. It definantly took away from the concert although I tried hard not to let that happen. I wouldent blame him if he wouldn't ever come back to The Woodlands or Texas again!

I first heard Givers a few years ago in a sports Bar in Beaumont Texas. They captivated me that night and since then I try to follow their success and catch some shows! High energy great instruments, great music! Gotye was great too, only heard a song or two on the radio, now I will go buy their cd! Great night!

    Low crowds but NOT disappointing!

by venren on 10/13/12Woodlands Pavilion - Woodlands

I could not believe how light the crowds were. I have never seen the Pavilion so empty. Too bad because they missed on an excellent show. Gotye was and is a TRUE artist. Fantastic personality and sense of humor. The songs sounded perfect. Glad i got to see him...up close due to the lack of audience, I was lead by an usher to a much closer seat than the one I purchased!! Lucky me!

    Gotye is unbelievable!

by Lisanut on 10/12/12UNO Lakefront Arena - New Orleans

I loved every minute of the show. Jonti was adorable and fascinating to watch. He also had a beautiful voice, sounded a little like John Lennon! Givers were awesome! Tiffany banged the crap out of those drums! She rocked. They had great chemistry on stage. And now for Wally De Backer....he is the most gifted, amazing, incredible musician. He played every inch of the stage! He is very serious about his music, but also knows how to have a good time. Met him afterward, and he is the sweetest, kindest, most humble man on the planet. I also met Ben and Lucas. They were so nice and easy to talk to. Really cool guys. It was the best night of my life!!

His music is truly amazing and the talent he possess is like no other. The music is POSITIVE and definitely worth listening to. I've been enjoying Gotye but, this show provides me with a entirely NEW respect for him as an artist, as a performer.

Gotye is very creative, exceeeded expectations

by SkyeD on 10/12/12UNO Lakefront Arena - New Orleans

Wow, what a show. The song State of the Art was amazing. I was not a huge fan going into the concert, but it blew me away. Use of "techno" music was real interesting. The other band members are very talented as well. Really enjoyed the show!

    Highly recommended

by Anonymous on 10/10/12Ryman Auditorium - Nashville

The show was much more impressive than I expected. I wasn't sure how they would pull off all the tunes live, but they nailed them. The band was great and it was just a great show all around.

    Gotye was amazing !!

by Nbeela on 10/9/12Tuscaloosa Amphitheater - Tuscaloosa

Words can't describe the performances and just the rush of being in front of an amazing singer. The best part was him performing state of the art and giving an encore performance . He was amazing and the performance was so surreal !! I've listened to all his CDs, which is recommended if you only know one song, and I truly love this guy. His band and video art are phenomenal and u would definitely see him again. Can't wait to see him and his crew again :)

Unique - would be an excellent outdoor concert

by KeepPeace on 10/8/12Ryman Auditorium - Nashville

I knew that Gotye's sound was innovative, but didn't realize HOW innovative until I saw the concert live. I've never seen instruments like some of the ones on stage! Some of my least favorite songs on the recent album ("Making Mirrors") were my favorites performed live. The show was fun and energetic - probably would have been more fun and enjoyable in an outdoor venue.

    Fantastic show!

by arnettchicago on 10/8/12Red Hat Amphitheater (formerly Raleigh Amphitheater) - Raleigh

First off, the venue is a great place to see a show. The opening band was so good that I actually bought a cd, even though I've never heard or seen her before. Gotye was fabulous! In fact, their famous song "Somebody that I used to know" doesn't really do them justice. I found them to be sort of between Coldplay, and Radiohead. It's not very often the lead singer is a drummer, but it works! Would recommend the show, and would definitely see again!

    Pleasantly Surprised

by Flaman on 10/7/12Ryman Auditorium - Nashville

I was not sure what to expect at the concert. I bought my tickets when his song, Somebody That I Used To Know, was a mega hit, but nothing really good came after that. I was concerned that the show would be lacking in good songs, not knowing anything other than his hit song. That concern vanished within one minute after he took the stage. BAM! Spotlight!! Percussion!! It was on! From that point the show was electric, filled with heavy percussion songs and unique guitars from his band members. Keyboard players, including himself helped create songs that held your attention. The background projected effects complimented the songs. He never really "talked" for over a minute at a time, and often not at all between songs. He slowed it down for a few songs, but that didn't mute the show, it just added another dimension. When he did play/sing his hit song, the audience stood on their feet and sang along. I would certainly recommend going to one of his shows. This show was in the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, a relatively small venue, so the "closeness" helped in my opinion. Go see him!

    Go...Go....GOTYE

by ManhattanMama10021 on 10/7/12Radio City Music Hall - New York

Gotye is a powerful performer. Percussions were oustanding. His presence on stage is mesmerizing. He and his band mates were outstanding. He performed for approximately 75 minutes - wished he had been on stage a bit longer.

Great show. This show was longer and had higher energy than the Michigan show I saw last April.

    Great show!

    by mkb33 on 10/7/12Ryman Auditorium - Nashville

While I enjoyed his album "Making Mirrors," seeing Gotye perform live was on a whole other level. He is an amazing percussionist, drummer and instrumentalist, and spent most of the time running around from station to station, all the while delivering amazing vocals. Gotye's backing band was amazing as well.

Awesome concert, incredible seats, not a bad seat in the house. I would love to do it again!
