Singer, songwriter, and musician Wally De Backer, a.k.a. Gotye, first appeared upon the Australian music scene in 2006 with his self-recorded album Like Drawing Blood – an effort that yielded his first local hit, “Hearts a Mess,” and won an AIR (Australian Independent Record) award. He also found success as part of the Australian trio The Basics. In 2011, however, Gotye would catapult to fame with the undeniably infectious song “Somebody That I Used to Know” (featuring New Zealand singer Kimbra) -- the video of which spread across the web like wildfire. Music fans worldwide took notice and, almost entirely on the merit of this one breakthrough hit, bought tickets and filled venues to see Gotye perform LIVE. A gifted drummer and percussionist as well as a vocalist with impressive range, Gotye’s often times understated but always innovative music -- a mix of quirky electronic sounds and acoustic rhythms -- evokes a mood both retro and modern. Songs like “Eyes Wide Open,” Easy Way Out,” and “State of the Art” take on new dimension during his concerts which feature De Backer on drums and various other instruments, and which utilize projected images that echo the striking visual artistry of Gotye’s music videos. Although his voice has often been compared to Peter Gabriel and Sting, his music is more inspired by Godley & Crème and DJ Shadow.
Gotye was AMAZING. I couldn't stop dancing the whole time. I was blown away and would definitely go to see them again.
This was one of the best shows I've been to in years. First of all, the venue was switched to House of Blues, Boston. We saw Kimbra perform first, she is going to be huge in the US. But the show stopper was certainly Gotye. He just has such a special and uniqueness to him that you can't help but want to watch everything he does. Not to mention he looks and sounds delicious :) I almost drove to MOntreal to see their show the next night. I can't wait to see them again.
Just an exceptional show. excellent visuals, and a great set list.
Kimbra and Gotye were both amazing - if anything she outshone him - but the transition between the two was unrealistically long and the stage crew seemed to be seriously struggling. If they had things together it would have been perfect.
Gotye puts on a really great show! The setlist covered both the new album (Making Mirrors), and an older album (Like Drawing Blood) evenly. The vibe was upbeat and fun. Made even better by excellent visuals playing on the screen behind Wally. Opener Kimbra is fantastic, definitely one to watch. Puts on a show like a seasoned professional and she's still so young.
The House of Blues in Boston is a great venue. Kimbra and her band were tight. Having Kimbra there was more of a double-bill than an "opening act." Her performance alone was worth the price of admission. Gotye was beyond-words-amazing!!!! Wally and his band were having a great time and rocked, rocked, rocked! I stood front row! ...and I got to meet Kimbra and Wally (autograph too) after the show - they're both just wonderful artists/people.
First time I got to see Gotye live and he didn't disappoint in the least. He sounded great and the band was awesome. Wally started to get weird with the crowd, in a good way, as it seemed he was having fun with the audience. Speaking of the audience, the only reason this was not a five star event, half the crowd was a little lackluster. It seemed an odd mix of people who really knew the songs and the other half had just heard of him. Otherwise the live show was better then the CD version of most songs as expected. "State of the Art," was a great time. As for Kimbra to get right to it she was amazing and her band can jam. The crowd really got into it and she brought a great energy. Tore the place down with "Old Flame," which was apparently a crowd request. Really impressed with Kimbra and her group.
Kimbra (and her people) opened the show for about an hour. She exuded so much energy that the floor started shaking. Gotye has such a great voice, and he sounds exactly as he does on his albums. He (and his people) played some interesting and unusual instruments which added to his overall enchantment. I didn't even notice how much my feet were hurting until it was time to leave. Excellent, excellent show! -Megan
the band was really great but the show was a little short - only a little over an hour
really good show but quite short - didn't catch Kimbra as opener but she was great for Someone I Use To Know
I love Gotye and the concert was so much fun. It's too bad that it seems that most of the audience only knew the hits and didn't know the album... b/c the album is AMAZING!! Great live show - Great sound.
Both Gotye and Kimbra are really fantastic artists and equal in their performing. I only wish they had more music together. I'd go see them again and again!
The show was amazing. Kimbra rocked, and Gotye was beyond fun. It was one of the beat shows I've been to. I've been trying to get tix to see them in NY while they're here again....so great!
Loved his music for the past year - was very excited to see live. His music sounds best live - one song i wasn't keen on sounded 1,000 times better live and now i love that song too. Kimbra wa first and good - also good vocals and music but also impersonal . You would think being NYC. They would both talk more- when he left the stage he simply walked off- almost like he couldn't wait to leave. However he's talent is great both vocals and playing. Would see again
Got very close to the stage, his performance was amazing. Got awesome pics, and his voice is just incredible live! Glad I got to see him while he was stateside. & Kimbra is just a ton of fun on stage. I'd definitely recommend seeing these 2 live!
Got really close to the stage and both Kimbra's and Gotye's vocals were out of this world! Awesome concert!
Gotye puts on a great show with highs and lows. He knows exactly how to get the crows going. People weren't pushing or being obnoxious. It was perfect. Perfect. P-e-r-f-e-c-t.
This is my first time see Gotye live and I loved it! He was just as good live as on the album. If anything he was EXACTLY like on the album. There was very little change or embellishment. But they are all impressive musicians. To play drums and sing at the same time and how they masterfully layered all of the sounds, I was really impressed. And I'm really glad I got to see them in an intimate setting before they go big.
Sounds just as great live as he does prerecorded. Lots of animation in the background made for an ever evolving stage. Very cool and a lot of fun!
His voice was a dream. Very rarely can a band sound better live than on a record, but he does it!
