Ghost of the Blues.... way too long!

by Nightowl224 on 2/10/14Akron Civic Theatre - Akron

I enjoy Blues music, but it was advertised as a 'musical. The talent was good and I enjoyed it to a degree. The event lasted more than three hours... about an hour and a half too long. Not sure why they had to mention Fox News at one point, only to get a 'Boo' from some members of the audience. Keep politics out of this type of venue!

Ghost of the Blues - disappointing

by Horbes on 2/10/14Akron Civic Theatre - Akron

The premise to the show was great, but the production values were not up to high-school play levels. What little dialog there was, often was muddled and unintelligible. A program handout would have been a big help (for the performers as well, to allow audience to know and appreciate the musical talents), but I was told they only printed 400, and were quickly out (even though we arrived early). Transitions between musical sets were clumsy and appeared disorganized, sometimes sounded like they needed much more rehearsals. Great musical talent, but a big waste not to have some narration or dialog explaining the evolution and connections of the musical greats being portrayed. For $40 per ticket, I expected much more.

Ghost of the Blues needs a stage manager

by Beautsie on 2/10/14Akron Civic Theatre - Akron

I enjoyed some of the performers, particularly Stacey Brooks as Etta James, Biscuit Miller as Willie Dixon, and certainly it was a pleasure seeing Muddy Water's son, Mud Morganfield performing his dad, but the show appeared to be lacking a stage manager. Several of the performers seemed confused whether it was their time on stage or not and several had difficulty finding their cords and amplifiers. The back up bands did well. I was expecting to see Stevie Ray Vaughn, but his appearance on stage was ridiculous. Another young man that was on stage as Willie Dixon's band, was announced about 1/2 hour later as Stevie Ray. He had not left the stage or changed his clothes and they would have been better not to have said anything at all. The Janis Joplin had a fine voice, but she did not look like Janis at all which took away from the performance. I would probably not recommend this show to my friends without a warning of the poor stage production.

Ghost of the Blues was phenomenal

by Chickpea2 on 2/10/14Akron Civic Theatre - Akron

The music was fabulous and the singers were awesome. I only wish I knew who some of them were. I am new to the blues and a little more of an introduction would have been in order. They also ran out of programs so I didn't get one.

    Good concept, OK execution

by Oldbluesfanboy on 2/10/14Akron Civic Theatre - Akron

The concept of a night in Blues heaven visiting many of the historic great players is very exciting. The program for the show revealed the weakness of the show: little explanation of the events or order of the show and players, just lots of detail of the cast and their role as each Blues person. The actual music was mostly good, but the show was too long with too many similar extended individual solos. It would have helped to have had an unseen narrator introduce each persona and give a couple facts about them and their contribution. A detail- the spot light had numerous delays in following the soloists.
