    Forgettable

    by S&H on 8/13/23

Jimmy’s is an incredible venue—have been members for a couple of years. We’ve seen numerous acts ranging from awesome to mediocre since they opened. The staff, food, wine list and cocktails are first rate. Cindy Blackman Santana is an incredible drummer—saw her with the Carlos Santana-EWF tour where she put on an fantastic show. Unfortunately, her solo band show on Thursday night was an utterly forgettable, monotonous cacophony of noise that never reached any level of interest or comparability to her previous back up performance. Her band members looked confused, often lost in the mire of her insane drum licks. Though we tolerated the whole show (hoping for something redeemable), we could easily have left after 20 minutes and been better off. No need to repeat the show next year.

Mixed Bag ...Some good, some Bad

by Norman W. on 10/18/21Jimmy’s Jazz and Blues Club - Portsmouth

Billed as 7.30 pm start came on 40 mins late. Why ? Disrespect to audience ? Jimmy's club was great, small and intimate with good seating and very impressive ambience and service. Food selections (really ..snacks) were good but very overpriced. A 4 oz (!) pour of wine was $13 (One was $30) .. but the club was pretty good. Cindy Blackman was outstanding, she played with a minimalist drum kit (only 4 drums). However, most of the music was incoherent - melody-wise, kind of like a lot of Miles Davis 15 minute jams. Also the saxophonist (can't remember his name) stood at the center-front of the small stage completely blocking Cindy !! - Ridiculous. Half the time he wasn't playing and just stood there like a statue - Terrible layout of the band. As I said .. most of the music was unmelodic and incoherent.. guess I'm spoiled on her husband's band !!

The venue was beautiful. Air was clear and fresh. The music drove it home. Looking forward to going back for more.
