    Wonderful music and interesting storyline

by Alex95 on 12/2/14Peabody Opera House - St. Louis

Very Stephen King in it's story line- twists and turns, make a crazy ride to the very end. The music was wonderful and fit the story perfect. My husband has been waiting six months to see this play and he LOVED it. He felt the story line was intriguing and thought provoking, maybe because he has a brother :-). As with any Stephen King creation there is a touch of the supernatural mixed in with the craziness that makes up the human character.

Stephen King lived up to his reputation!

by tnstlouis on 12/2/14Peabody Opera House - St. Louis

The musical had twists and turns and we did not see the ending coming. Shocking. That makes it exciting! The method used for bringing characters in and out was different than what we're use to in a musical/play. We were not comfortable with the adult language and content in the presence of a 10 year old played by Zac Ballard. We understand the need for the history to be played by a child, but this child was exposed to more than a 10 year old should be introduced to. We would recommend sitting center of the venue as there is activity off to the sides that we could not see by sitting in Orchestra Left seating.

I thought the music/singing was fantastic. The sound system was off somewhat, sometimes it was hard to hear what they were saying. Overall I really enjoyed the event.

    Ghost Brothers was fantastic!

by Dinofan1216 on 12/2/14DPAC - Durham Performing Arts Center - Durham

The best musical I have seen. What a cast of great performers. I'd love to see this show again and again. The music was great, the story was suburb, and the set design was just simply perfect. Go see the show wherever it is!

    Ghost Brothers Rocked!

by Indybound on 12/2/14Peabody Opera House - St. Louis

This performance was epic! It was dark, yet funny. The music was superb. You felt the music in your soul and it just fit the storyline perfectly. Thankfully I purchased the CD and DVD so I can watch it again and again and again. I LOVED IT! Very worth the wait.

    Worst Play Ever

by theatergoer2014 on 12/2/14Peabody Opera House - St. Louis

We have been going to plays, musicals, operas, ballets, concerts, and other performance events for almost forty years. Only once before last Saturday had we walked out before the final curtain. But then we saw "Ghost Brothers of Darkland County." Or rather, we saw the first act of "Ghost Brothers of Darkland County." And out we went at intermission. What a terrible piece of theater, terrible in every respect: the music, the lyrics, the acting, the accents, and even the lighting, so dark that it was hard to see exactly what we were supposed to see. My worst reaction, however, is left for the book written by Stephen King. It was sophomoric, trite, painfully awkward, obvious. To think that this show has been "in development" for fifteen years boggles the mind. Kill it. Spare future audiences.

    Ghost Brothers was interestingly done

by PDS856 on 12/2/14Peabody Opera House - St. Louis

We did not know what to expect, but thought with a story by Stephen King and music by John Mellencamp, it would be intriguing to see what it would be. The music was great, the story was interesting, but a bit thin and a bit predictable. Not much was spent on sets or anything, but that's okay- it worked.

    Outstanding Music

by Ksaw4 on 12/1/14Oriental Theatre Chicago - Chicago

If you like the John Mellencamp style of music, strings, percussion and acoustic guitar, this is your event. The show also featured some outstanding vocalists. While the storyline was a bit weak, the music will keep you captivated.

brilliant minds came together to put together a play that can laugh at horrible events. Great music and a wonderful cast.

    Weak Story

by KingOzymandias on 12/1/14Oriental Theatre Chicago - Chicago

I was impressed with a lot of things in this production, but ultimately, the story was poorly constructed. First, I thought the cast was excellent. From better known stars to those lesser known supporting cast, the vocal quality was excellent. Big props to Billy Burke! Who knew he had such a deep, rich and controlled voice? Second, I thought the music was also excellent. I could definitely hear John Mellencamp's influence throughout all the songs, (to the point of using Shazam on some, because I was convinced I had heard it before.) Love or hate his music, he is the sound of middle America, and it was a perfect fit for the subject matter. Third, T Bone Burnett's arrangement was beautiful. The musicians were excellent, and the types of instruments used pulled that Americana feeling out of Mellencamp's music. I also felt the staging was different and innovative. The characters sit in semi-circle and come forward to tell their stories, sing their songs, or move the play along. As they act center stage, all others listen quietly, strongly evoking the classic story circle of all our ghost story memories. Unfortunately, the writing is where this play fell into the fire. Like many promising efforts I have witnessed, it starts strong, but finishes badly. Joe sits in a bar, contemplating his life and past mistakes. We come to realize that this is taking place in his mind. This allows us to suspend belief and accept the characters of the devil and the narrator, along with the ghosts, as members of the cast. I also found the parallels the story drew between Joe's feuding brothers and feuding sons as compelling and promising. Ultimately though, I felt Mr King could not come up with an ending that supported the beginning, and one that the beginning deserved. Mr King concludes the play in a maelstrom of violence and death that absolutely does not make sense! This was made even more awkward by the actions of characters that were, in essence, out of character, simply because the time wasn't taken to develop the characters. Also, I found the character of the ghost of the caretaker character extremely contrived. I have a feeling, when it was being written, someone said, "We need a character who can sing deep and soulful." Someone else responded, "Let's include an old black caretaker!" Overall, I really enjoyed the music, acting and staging, but the story was weak and completely fell apart at the end.

Just go buy a Mellencamp CD or a S King book

by Anonymous on 12/1/14Oriental Theatre Chicago - Chicago

Were the actors all hung-over from Thanksgiving? Too much turkey? Most seemed absolutely listless on stage. And, the story was a bit lame. I give it 2 stars for some decent songs, Eric Moore's strong voice and the temptation/devil character. Intriguing premise for the staging - pseudo radio program.

by McAnd on 12/1/14Oriental Theatre Chicago - Chicago

Ghost Brothers of Darkland County sounded intriguing, but was greatly disappointing. Stupid story, unsympathetic and stereotyped characters, and low production values. A few good songs, but otherwise, meh.

    outstanding production

by hannaher on 12/1/14Fisher Theatre - Detroit

The music was phenomenal, the acting and vocals were amazing, and the story itsself was unique, surprising, and a breath of fresh air compared to the usual predictability of a musical. Great job all around, and hats off to Stephen King for his excellent writing!
