It was excelent. It would be much better if percusion was included , but at the end it was excelent...!!! The songs selected were perfect...! ...Gal ... you're the best of the best female singer of Brazil...!!!
The show was great! Songs where very well done. The guitarist was a phenom. Gal and Romero were superb together. Only problem we had was the stage lighting on the guitarist. A terrible glare reflected off of the guitar straight into the the eyes of those seated in the orchestra. It was blinding and a terrible visual. I had to close my eyes much of the show to avoid the terrible glare. Not why you buy tickets up front, more care should be taken with this issue.
The hall was full with an audience who was quite familiar, more like a reunion. While Gal Costa may not be the best female singer, technically, nor is she the petite wild haired Carioca of her youth, her songs still transcends time and gives me a beautiful dream of a Brazil where I was, sadly, too young to know. I only wish there could be a revival of the genre. I was surprised it was her first time in Washington DC.
Maestro Neves and Gal Costa brought us magically back to the early days of Bossa Nova and created a very relaxed and personal atmosphere for the audience to participate, dream and reminisce--Saudades...pure Saudades...
Gal Costa is the best vocalist of Brazil and probably the world. Coupling her beautiful voice and technique with legendary Jobim and Jobim-era songs rendered a concert that is insurpassable. Expecting to find her on the downside of her career, I was surprised to hear that her voice has never been better or fresher. A rare treat not to be missed by anyone who loves music.
Royce Hall is a wonderful venue for concerts such as Gal Costa and Oscar Castroneves. I was not familiar with the music, but do love Bossa Nova. We sat next to some Brazilian woman who asked what can we do if we hear a song that we hear and want to get up and dance? This was not that type of concert because Gal Costa decided to sing songs that she grew up with and inspired her to become the wonderful singer that she is... One thing that was a bit strange is that she started looking at her watch, like she was pushing up against an appointment that she could not miss. I've never seen that before and know that the women I sat next too were not "thrilled" with that. Most people, however, came out with smiles on their faces, so it was a good time!
