One opf the Best Gal Costa shows I ever attended. She is her best momments singing as she does all her bartisitic life, and shining as never did before
The show was fantastic. Gal Costa is a great performer.
She is considered by critics one of twelve voices most important of 20th century. This is Jazz, this is Bossa Nova!!!!
Some things, like wines, get better with age. This performance combined some of the best of Brazilian jazz vocals with improvized guitar techniques, humor, nostalgia (saudade), and poignancy in a mix rarely, if ever, seen.
Lovely, relaxed, open as a performer. And her speaking voice was as delicious as her singing voice. The digital backup on a few songs was annoying--it made those sound like muzak. Otherwise enjoyable.
She sang so many of other people's songs. She should have sang more of her own songs and songs that are very popular, like Chuva de prata. I liked the concert because I like her and her voice, but she could have done a much better job showing her own work.
What an amazing performarce by Gal Costa and Romero Lubambo. Great improvisations and a fun interaction between the duo and the audience. I felt so close to home for those almost two hours of listening to the beautiful classics of the great Bossa Nova. Truly an incredible concert!
It was awesome to watch this brazilian legend perform here in DC. She still rocks. The musician playing the guitar was actually the best performance I have ever seen. The space between rows at Lisner Auditorium is very small. If you are a tall person your legs wont fit. It's not a comfortable venue at all.
I had attended Gal Costa's concert at Carnegie Hall in the 80's and did not know what to expect in 2009. Although her voice has changed, her concert last night was unforgettable. Her performance and her song selection were delivered with passion. I wish the concert would have lasted longer. I can never have too much of Gal Costa live.
Great Show! Gal is a great interpreter of MPB i know that " recordar é viver"... but, i would like to hear more of her "new songs" not only the "old songs" that were popular in Brasil 30 years ago. ps the guy on the guitar was also fantastic!
This concert was amazing! It was definitely in my top 10 concerts of all time. :)
The show was fantastic. The musics make me remember my great country "Brasil".
She is still one of my favorites so far. The show was amazing! Just what i expected!!
For the first time in DC (as she by herself reinforced) and speaking English as a non-native speaker, Gal did a great job. SInging the most memorable and historic Brazilian songs of all times, like "Mulher de Malandro" (Ary Barroso), "Vatapa' " (Dorival Caymmi), "Aquarela do Brasil" (Ary Barroso), "Chega de Saudade" (Joao Gilberto), "Desafinado", "Wave" and the 'cliche' song "The Girl from Ipanema" (Tom Jobim), among others, I felt she wanted to pass a positive message both to Brazilian people living in America, specifically in Washington DC, and also to the American people and others (I brought a german friend) going for the first time to appreciate Brazilian music. All that said, I missed "Brasil" (Cazuza), but understand that it would be not as appropriate as the other songs chosen for this particular moment of our culture and history. Excellent! Unfortunatelly, we were not allowed to take pictures with menace of the cameras being collected...
The show was great, she picked some real classics. Most of the audience spoke Portuguese, you could tell when alot of people sang along. The place was packed and when the last set was announced, I was surprised to check the time and noticed that she had been singing for almost and hour and a half. The guitarrist Romero Lubambo is incredible. They were great together.
Gal Costa is the best of the best in the beautiful sounds of Bosa Nova ...
Gal Costa is an icon in Brazil, she is the voice of childhood, the voice of teenage years, the voice of love and longing, and fun . Her first concert in DC showed us why. Her repetoire was one all Brazilians could relate to, evidenced by their loud and enthusiastic singing right on cue for many songs. Lest we Americans be left out, she intersperced enough Jobim and other songs that are familiar to us and sung some of them in their English translations (noteably, Girl From Ipanema). This reviewer is honored to have been part of her performance last evening.
Great singer, great vibe, great crowd! Cheerful interaction between singer and audience.
Gal is a legend and it was truly a privilege to be able to listen to her live here in DC. Thank you!
Gal Costa's acoustic show was musical, yes, but humorous also. Her guitarist Romero Lubambo kept her on her toes, with playful arrangements and constant joking. His nylon string acoustic was perfectly full accompaniment for Gal's excellent pitch and phrasing. It was just the duo, nobody else. Gal's voice grew stronger every song, and by the 4th song, sounded like the singer's younger days. They brought the audience through the Jobim classics and even the American jazz classic "As Time Goes By." Gal does have new music, but didn't play much of that, perhaps because it was, surprisintly, her first trip to Washington DC. She spoke only in English, but was surprised how many Brazilians were in attendance.
