A groundbreaking new musical.
After smash-hit seasons on Broadway and in London, Fun Home comes to Sydney in a soaring brand-new production.
Winner of three Tony Awards including Best Musical and Best Original Score, and a finalist for the 2014 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, Fun Home has been hailed as a “beautiful, heartbreaker of a musical” (New York Times) and “one of the best new musicals of our era” (LA Times). Based on Alison Bechdel’s graphic novel, it’s a heartfelt story about coming out and coming of age.
After the unexpected death of her father, Alison is forced to confront his secrets that come to light. Shifting between past and present, we meet present-day Alison, a successful graphic novelist; college-age Alison on the cusp of self-discovery; and precocious-child Alison, who plays in coffins instead of sandboxes in the family’s Bechdel Funeral Home.
Four-time Gold Logie Award winner Lisa McCune and Maggie McKenna (Muriel’s Wedding the Musical) join an exceptional ensemble including Ryan Gonzalez (Jersey Boys), Lucy Maunder (Beautiful: The Carole King Musical), Adam Murphy (Aladdin) and Chloe Zuel (West Side Story). Directed by Melbourne Theatre Company’s Associate Director, Dean Bryant, Fun Home has laughs, drama and great tunes in spades.
Don’t miss this chance to see one of the hottest musicals to come out of the US in a decade.
“Fun Home is not your ordinary Broadway musical, because it is extraordinary.” Time Out New York
Amazing show and terrific production. Go see it if you have a chance.
An inspirational and moving production! Don’t miss it!
This is a very powerful chamber musical, it is easy to see how attending in a smaller venue increases the emotional impact. However seeing it in such a large venue lessens the impact. The performances were very strong but the show does not translate well into cavernous spaces. So, if you see it, splurge and get seats up close!
Intense, highly unusual, beautifully acted and sung.
Loved it! I have read all her comics and books. This was a wonderful adaptation of Fun Home and I recommend to all who have or have not read her works
Amazing acting and singing, great score, touching portrayal of a troubled family and how the main character survived. All three actors were unforgettable.
The dining was great and the kids did a fantastic job.
What a beautifully written and musicalized piece of theater, taking us through a process-of-becoming in these character's lives which is both heart-breaking and exhilarating. I left the theater feeling so moved, albeit saddened, and yet feeling so empowered by the experience of witnessing these characters discovering … and uncovering … their truths. Days later, and I still am resonating to FUN HOME's intimacy as it engages its audience into such a personal depth of self-discovery. What a truly wonderful accomplishment for the cast, the staging, the writing and the musical composition to accomplish such a conveyance of heartfelt intimacy, particularly in the cavernous Boston Opera House. (A smaller venue would've been preferred, in my opinion, but this cast and staging made it work!) Bravo to all connected with FUN HOME! I'm trying to spread my recommendation to all that I know. It's a must-see!
Well acted by all, kids were especially great. Surprised there wasn't any intermission.
Horrible ! expected fun musical and it certainly was not!
I did not know what to expect, since I hadn't read anything about the show. It was phenomenal. The cast was outstanding - great acting. The story line was haunting, but presented with humor and heart. I actually liked the story line better than Rent - stunning. Rates up there with my favorites.
This was not fun. Agonizing. Great performances but not an upbeat uplifting play.
Saw this at ASU Gammage on opening night. It is such a good show. The actors were fantastic. The story was captivating. The music was excellent. It has serious subject matter which was fine with me and my daughter but some might find it to be too "heavy."
it is a true art form to find comedy, wit and melody out of a tragedy. the author/writer of fun home made it so. I love musicals and am glad I went to see this one.
I saw the Broadway production, which only exceeded this production because it was staged in the round.
Interesting story, acting and singing superb, set pieces let you know what room it was happening in. Use of the three females to play the different age ranges.
Witty, funny, heart wrenching Fun House is worth the your time
The performances were excellent but the material was a bit uneven. Some of the songs were excellent-- but others were very odd.
In a time of big productions, it was nice to be part of an intimate show that reminds us what it means to be human. Through Alison's story we observe the masks that create distance in many of our families and we experience her learning to define who she is for herself. The songs are fun and thoughtful and the acting was impeccable. You can't help but be touched by this story.
We've seen many Broadway shows. This was the worst hands down. Sad, depressing script. Not the kind of show you would want to take your kids to. Or your mom and dad. Or anyone for that matter. It was just a little too real. Singing and acting was just ok. Don't waste your time. See something that is fun.
