About

FOURPLAY IN CONCERT:

Iconic smooth jazz quartet Fourplay hold the distinction of being the only music group in history to be recognized by the United States Congress, and it's easy to see why. Comprised of some of the best jazz musicians in the world, the supergroup never fails to dazzle with their virtuosic playing and electrifying chemistry on stage, creating an outsized live sound that belies their humble setup. Featuring selections from more than two decades of recording, Fourplay's 2013 shows hit all the right notes, building excitement for their 2014 tour dates.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Formed in 1990 by Bob James, Harvey Mason, Nathan East, and Lee Ritenour, Fourplay made their self-titled album debut in 1991, topping the Billboard Contemporary Jazz Albums chart for a whopping 33 weeks.  Their potent blend of pop, R&B, and smooth jazz clearly struck a chord with audiences — 1993 sophomore album Between the Sheets was a similar success, also topping the charts and receiving a Grammy nomination. Over the years, they've been joined on their recordings by a range of celebrated pop vocalists including Phil Collins, Patti Austin, and Babyface, and they hold the honor of being the only musical group ever honored by the United States Congress. With a host of highly anticipated tour dates scheduled for 2014, fans eagerly await a follow-up album to 2012's lauded Esprit de Four.

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:

"These guys are the most professional, tight, hard playing SMOOTH jazz band I've had the pleasure of seeing live. They played continuously and ebulliently for almost 2 hours!"

"It's hard to believe that two guitars, a piano and drums can put out the sound that Fourplay does. What a talented foursome."

"The musicianship was impeccable, the mood was enchanting, and the energy was electric."

  • Great concert, seats not so much!

by momofjnj on 9/3/11Sound Board at MotorCity Casino Hotel - DetroitRating: 5 out of 5

What can you say about Spyro Gyra and Fourplay!? Absolutely awesome show! This was my first time attending an event at Sound Board and I bought the tickets as part of an anniversary present for my husband. I logged on as soon the tickets went on sale and was so excited to get front row, center stage! The problem.....Sound Board's stage is 6 feet up from the main floor and we were looking up the whole time! I think they should put risers under the main floor seats! For other users, this is section "mix 20". "Mix 10 and Mix 30" are on the either side of this section but they are on the same level as the stage. I think those seats would be the best in the house given this situation.

  • FourPlay - The Marcus Johnson Project

by LadyJenna on 8/26/11Carter Barron Amphitheatre - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5

Marcus Johnson opened the show for about 2 songs and then the storm approached and the show was delayed for approximately 45 to one hour. FourPlay was "GREAT" and made the wait worthwhile. Through their 20 yrs of entertaining they never cease to amaze you at any of their shows. I especially like the addition of Chuck Loeb, he compliments the group to perfection and of course Nathan, Bob and Harvey are the consummate entertainers that they will always be. It was a great show and I look forward to seeing them again soon.

  • could"ve been great

by Palet on 8/24/11Carter Barron Amphitheatre - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5

This was 2 of my favorite groups, Marcus Johnson Project and Fourplay. We only got to see and hear about 45mins of the concert because a storm came up with rain / thunder and lightning, lots of it...We were told to leave and stand under the shelter. Then we were told to leave the shelter and go to our cars. We waited about an hour but the rain and lightning did not let up and the concert never started again so we left for home very disappointed for my birthday.

  • Marcus Johnson & FOURPLAY WERE AWESOME!!!!!!

by bjdoi on 8/24/11Carter Barron Amphitheatre - WashingtonRating: 4 out of 5

the concert started out rather slow. Marcus Johnson did his thing (early) even though the weather didn't permit him to continue. Still a great job.... Fourplay was awesome, our first time for live concert. The weather turned out great and the ambience was really really nice.... Thanks for a great experience in the jazz community.

  • FOURPLAY was fabulous

    by Summer51 on 8/23/11Carter Barron Amphitheatre - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5

This group only gets better with time! Love you, Bob, Harvey, and Nate!! Chuck Loeb ably succeeds Lee Rittenour and seamlessly blends with the originals. We had to wait out a summer thunderstorm, but it was well worth the wait. A long-time favorite remains an all-time favorite!!

    by LC53 on 8/23/11Carter Barron Amphitheatre - WashingtonRating: 4 out of 5

The decision to put Marcus Johnson on first was a good decision, seeing that we had to leave the CB due to storms. I went to my car but returned when CB reopened and totally enjoyed Fourplay.

Marcus Johson was rained out but I waited for the rain to stop and to see Fourplay and they were out of this world. It was one of Carter Barron' s best shows.

The show was excellent. Even though the show was cancelled for a short time due to lighting. it started back-up with no problems. The acoustic was great as well as the performance.

  • Nice Mellow Evening in the City

by GwenieinDC on 8/22/11Carter Barron Amphitheatre - WashingtonRating: 4 out of 5

The Carter Baron is a wonderful lil jewel in the City, but you take your chances when it comes to the weather. The Marcus Johnson Project performance was short lived because of the impending storm. Just in the nick of time Joe Gorham of WHUR asked the audience to vacate the seating area, so we all headed for the covered concession area, where we listened to the Thunder, saw the Lightening, watched the Rain fall profusely, and got to know each other. The rain poured for what seemed like eternity, some left the concert all together and many went and sat in their vehicles until the storm passed. However for the many who waited it out, the wait was indeed worth waiting for. Great evening just to chill out from the work week by yourself, with your special Boo or a group of fun friends!!!

  • Rain can't stop a really good concert

by lsmoothy on 8/22/11Carter Barron Amphitheatre - WashingtonRating: 4 out of 5

If it had not been for it raining, this was one of the best concerts I've seen is quite some time! If you like live jazz music then you would have enjoyed this event. Glad I was there!

    by Dickie1 on 8/21/11Carter Barron Amphitheatre - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5

It was too bad that The Marcus Johnson Project set was cut short due to the incoming thuinderstorm. Glad I waiting after rain delay for Fourplay performance. Their collaboration was da bomb!! I wished that they could had played longer.
