As always it rained and Marcus Johnson who was GREAT had to stop for rain. However, after the downpour it was a nice night and Fourplay was excellent.

About
FOURPLAY IN CONCERT:
Iconic smooth jazz quartet Fourplay hold the distinction of being the only music group in history to be recognized by the United States Congress, and it's easy to see why. Comprised of some of the best jazz musicians in the world, the supergroup never fails to dazzle with their virtuosic playing and electrifying chemistry on stage, creating an outsized live sound that belies their humble setup. Featuring selections from more than two decades of recording, Fourplay's 2013 shows hit all the right notes, building excitement for their 2014 tour dates.
BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:
Formed in 1990 by Bob James, Harvey Mason, Nathan East, and Lee Ritenour, Fourplay made their self-titled album debut in 1991, topping the Billboard Contemporary Jazz Albums chart for a whopping 33 weeks. Their potent blend of pop, R&B, and smooth jazz clearly struck a chord with audiences — 1993 sophomore album Between the Sheets was a similar success, also topping the charts and receiving a Grammy nomination. Over the years, they've been joined on their recordings by a range of celebrated pop vocalists including Phil Collins, Patti Austin, and Babyface, and they hold the honor of being the only musical group ever honored by the United States Congress. With a host of highly anticipated tour dates scheduled for 2014, fans eagerly await a follow-up album to 2012's lauded Esprit de Four.
FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:
"These guys are the most professional, tight, hard playing SMOOTH jazz band I've had the pleasure of seeing live. They played continuously and ebulliently for almost 2 hours!"
"It's hard to believe that two guitars, a piano and drums can put out the sound that Fourplay does. What a talented foursome."
"The musicianship was impeccable, the mood was enchanting, and the energy was electric."

by RockinRobi on 8/21/11Carter Barron Amphitheatre - WashingtonRating: 4 out of 5The show was great considering it rain. Never got to hear Marcus Johnson Project. FourPlay shut the house down
- by BDiamond on 8/21/11Carter Barron Amphitheatre - WashingtonRating: 2 out of 5
Unfortunately I didn't have the pleasure of enjoying two of my favorite groups, due to weather conditions. Hopefully Fourplay will return and I can catch Marcus Johnson another time.
MJ & Fourplay - doesn't get any better than this!!
by Vox1 on 8/21/11Carter Barron Amphitheatre - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5Unfortunately Marcus Johnson didn't get to play long..as there were thunderstorms looming that broke loose after a few songs and the crowd was ushered out of their seats to a safer area. After the storm passed, the concert resumed but moved on to the next group, Fourplay, who are at the top of their game, the best at what they do, legendary ..and FUN! ~totally danceable!!! ..would have loved to have heard more of the Marcus Johnson Project...another extraordinary talent. Both groups that played are the best at what they do..
Stellar
by Trareg on 8/21/11Carter Barron Amphitheatre - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5For only $25, my wife and I enjoyed a stellar night of jazz fusion. As an avid jazz fan for 32 of my 47 years, I presume that I possess the credibility to review a concert. Fourplay's performance was a display of musical ingenuity and mastery. Having attended a number of Bob James' performances, it was amazing that he was able to further astonish me with his improvisational skill. Harvey Mason kept the band grooving with the wooden licks to push his colleagues. The new addition, Chuck Loeb, made the guitar "talk" on a number of occasions during the evening. Nathan East provided the energy and powerful bass for the evening. Together, the four's performance proved that they were masters over their instrument.s. The proof in my attitude is evident by my next move. When I returned home, I went to the computer and purchased tickets for Fourplay's upcoming concert at Rehoboth Beach in October.
Fourplay
by jazzylp on 8/21/11Carter Barron Amphitheatre - WashingtonRating: 4 out of 5Rain didn't help, but I guess they couldn't control that. Thought Fourplay was a little flat. Maybe because of the acoustics? Needed to play more familiar songs, rather than the new album stuff.
Fourplay was a class act!
by RainyAugust on 8/21/11Carter Barron Amphitheatre - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5So glad I waited out the rain and storm. This was my first event at CB and a good introduction. The group did a fantastic job playing a range of music, relating to the crowd, and getting us involved.

Let me begin by saying that I had not been to the Carter Barron Amphitheater since 1982 (29 years) and I could not have asked for a better lineup than Four Play and The Marcus Johnson Project to reacquaint myself with the facility. Although unfamiliar with The Marcus Johnson Project, I found their innovative and progressive style of jazz phenomenal. Unfortunately, I was not impressed by the second act performance by Mother Nature. She sang “rain” for at least 15-20 minutes. Thankfully, she decided not to give the audience a full performance. I have followed Four Play and specifically Bob James as long as I can remember and was pleasantly surprised that neither had lost their zest and enthusiasm for live performance. The only selection missing from Four Play’s repertoire that would have made the evening pure magic would be Chaka Kahn and Nathan East singing the Isley Brothers’ hit, Between the Sheets. Otherwise, It was truly a night to remember.
amazing

An evening to remember
by StuffandKnots on 8/21/11Carter Barron Amphitheatre - WashingtonRating: 4 out of 5I was excited when I heard about these two amazing acts. I remember the first time I saw Marcus Johnson, I thought to myself I will follow him to the end of the earth. He was in Baltimore at the African American Cultural Festival in Towson. He was awesome. I was a little disappointed Friday at the Carter Barren there was a rain delay by the time the concert resumed Marcus Johnson was gone. They did a few songs and the rain came. By the time the concert resumed Marcus Johnson was gone. Ahh Four Play put on an awesome show. I had a blast. Bob James is the Man.

by M077854 on 8/21/11Carter Barron Amphitheatre - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5Fun tmes under the stars enjoying the smooth jazz of Fourplay. They were wonderful and worth waiting through a thunderstorm to experience. another great event at the Carter Barron.
FourPlay rained out
by LuGlen on 8/21/11Carter Barron Amphitheatre - WashingtonRating: 1 out of 5I was very dissappointed that it severe storm broke out just as the concert was getting started. The police came and told everyone to go to their cars and wait the storm out. Getting from the concert location to the car left us very soaked and miserable. We were not able to stay for the concert due to the weather. It would be great to ge a refund due to the rain out of the event.
Rain or Shine
by danali on 8/21/11Carter Barron Amphitheatre - WashingtonRating: 5 out of 5I had a wonderful time. The rain was did not make me leave. They are worth it.
A storm ended the concert near the start!
by Burger on 8/21/11Carter Barron Amphitheatre - WashingtonRating: 2 out of 5The concert was stopped soon after it started because of a storm. Prior to that Marcus Johnson was really "cooking". The crowd was told initially to take cover in the back of Carter Barron under the roof. The crowd was orderly and waited for the rain to stopped. A Park Service Policeman rudely demanded that everyone leave the park. I felt crowd was safe under the roof. However our lives were placed in more danger when demands were made for us to leave the Park. I left angry so I do not know if the Concert started again as promised. I was very disappointed.
Couldn't enjoy because of the rain
by FrancisK on 8/21/11Carter Barron Amphitheatre - WashingtonRating: 1 out of 5Marcus Johnson was doing a fantastic job warming us up when the storm came and we forced/asked to leave e park! So I never had a chance to enjoy Fourplay! Are you guys planning on doing something about some type of encore for the people who missed the show?
Fourplay is fabulous, no two ways about it
by LadyBassclef on 4/15/11Birchmere - AlexandriaRating: 5 out of 5The Chuck Loeb era is yet another great phase of Fourplay. What a great time we had, being part of an appreciative crowd who really get how amazing these guys are. Harvey Mason is superb, and Nathan East, Bob James and Chuck Loeb are not chopped liver, either! Love the Birchmere - great venue for getting maximum enjoyment of music we love.
Fourplay
by TouchtheSky on 4/6/11Birchmere - AlexandriaRating: 5 out of 5So much talent on one stage! I have been listening to Fourplay for years, but to see them live really blows your mind on the amazing level of talent of each individual. The comradely of the group was an added pleasure, no wonder 3 of the 4 have been together for 20 years! Keep spreading the love guys.
Fourplay came there to throw down
by HULANJ on 4/6/11Birchmere - AlexandriaRating: 5 out of 5Me, my wife and my parents traveled from South Jersey to see an amazing show. We'll be back next year!!!!
Fourplay is legendary!!
by Raynman310 on 4/6/11Birchmere - AlexandriaRating: 5 out of 5I've followed Bob James for almost 40 years. Back since the "Heads" album. For those of you too young, that's a circular plastic disk when spun around with a diamond needle on it makes sound (lol). Harvey Mason is another I've had albums of. To see those guys for me was an incredible experience. Just as sharp and crisp as I thought they'd be. Legends!! Nathan East has incredible skills and is quite the entertainer I see. Chuck Leob fits in very nicely indeed, seemed very much at home with his new bandmates, and did not miss a beat... figuratively and literally.
