FOURPLAY IN CONCERT:

Iconic smooth jazz quartet Fourplay hold the distinction of being the only music group in history to be recognized by the United States Congress, and it's easy to see why. Comprised of some of the best jazz musicians in the world, the supergroup never fails to dazzle with their virtuosic playing and electrifying chemistry on stage, creating an outsized live sound that belies their humble setup. Featuring selections from more than two decades of recording, Fourplay's 2013 shows hit all the right notes, building excitement for their 2014 tour dates.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Formed in 1990 by Bob James, Harvey Mason, Nathan East, and Lee Ritenour, Fourplay made their self-titled album debut in 1991, topping the Billboard Contemporary Jazz Albums chart for a whopping 33 weeks.  Their potent blend of pop, R&B, and smooth jazz clearly struck a chord with audiences — 1993 sophomore album Between the Sheets was a similar success, also topping the charts and receiving a Grammy nomination. Over the years, they've been joined on their recordings by a range of celebrated pop vocalists including Phil Collins, Patti Austin, and Babyface, and they hold the honor of being the only musical group ever honored by the United States Congress. With a host of highly anticipated tour dates scheduled for 2014, fans eagerly await a follow-up album to 2012's lauded Esprit de Four.

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:

"These guys are the most professional, tight, hard playing SMOOTH jazz band I've had the pleasure of seeing live. They played continuously and ebulliently for almost 2 hours!"

"It's hard to believe that two guitars, a piano and drums can put out the sound that Fourplay does. What a talented foursome."

"The musicianship was impeccable, the mood was enchanting, and the energy was electric."

  • Don't Miss Them Again

by DeaconBluz on 4/5/11Birchmere - AlexandriaRating: 5 out of 5

The most amazing display of musical talent that I have ever witnessed. At one point "The Boys" had the audience completely spellbound, silent, and still. The guitar was there and it was Chuck. More than worth the fare and Wash, DC Cherry Blossom traffic. If you don't have the latest CD, GET IT!!!

This concert was excellent no wonder it was sold out. I will become a fourplay groupie. The addition of chuch loeb was superb. I cant say enough good things about this concert. Loved it.

  • Fourplay had me on the edge of my seat!

    by Vocal4X on 4/5/11Birchmere - AlexandriaRating: 5 out of 5

I've been a fan of Fourplay since the very first album. An accumulated 20 years of performing together should make for a tight performance. The sight of Bob James walking in with an Ipad 2 and using it for the setlist and sheet music blew me away. The use of cutting edge tech for old-school functions means his mind is as sharp as his skills. Words cannot begin to describe the showmanship and artistry exhibited on the stage at The Birchmere. I'll never forget the experience. Count this as a bucket list closer!

  • 4Play w/Chuck "Chuck" Loeb

Simply an awesome event. Has not missed a beat since the departure of Larry Carlton, even though I miss his vibe.

  • Fourplay was excellent.

I like first come first serve seating. I love the seating set up. You can see and hear well anywhere you sit. I like being up close and personal with the artists. Fourplay played their hearts out. They gave us a wonderful show. They mixed the old with the new and that made it really great. The food was delicious. I had the roasted turkey and stuffing with mashed potatoes. I ate it all and that is rare for me because I am a chef and I am very selective about my food. You need to keep this on the menu!!!!!!

  • Fourplay - Mostly new music

by JuneandTurner on 4/5/11Birchmere - AlexandriaRating: 3 out of 5

I really wanted to hear the older music. I am not too excited about the new CD. Loved BOB JAMES

  • Fourplay 20 years on

by Viggen on 4/5/11Birchmere - AlexandriaRating: 4 out of 5

This is the second time I've seen Fourplay. The last time was when Larry Carlton was the guitarist. I enjoyed the first show immensely. The second show was good and I'm glad that I went. However, I was not quite as happy with the songs that were selected at the second show. Chuck Loeb was very good on the guitar. But.....I'm a Larry Carlton fan and he was missed.

  • Fourplay is and will always be timeless!

  • FourPlay was forgettable

I usually love FourPlay but I was disappointed that they played slow sleepy music. They were the closer and we were looking forward to jammin on our feet.

  • From LA

by lynne on 8/12/10Chateau Ste Michelle Winery - WoodinvilleRating: 4 out of 5

It was a great concert. Very mellow, super good music and good sound system. weather was good. Luckily we'd brought a tarp for the ground cause it doesn't rain in LA, but drizzled that morning in Seattle and the whole experience was new to us. There was everything you need there (except the tarp): chairs, wine, glasses, food (not enough choices tho). But people around us offered their goodies they'd brought and it was an array of food. The music was good, with 15-20 min breaks between acts-enough time to get food and go to the many portapotties. We got there at beginning and left at end on sunday so new and old groups leading to Fourplay at end. All played about 1 hr each, enough to be satisfied with each. Each group signed cd's after which was nice and didn't interfere with the next group playing. A very well organized event and of course the music was great First time at this venue and early notice said there would be places designated for higher chairs, but didn't happen. Everyone was everywhere so a little difficult to see the stage all the time

  • Wonderful day

by Zepgirl on 8/12/10Chateau Ste Michelle Winery - WoodinvilleRating: 5 out of 5

Even though the weather was iffy, at least it didn't rain on Sunday. This is only our second year attending this festival and the music this year was spectacular. We were pleasantly surprised by the talent of Jackeim Joyner. If you haven't heard him, check him out! And Brian Bromberg was also amazingly entertaining. And Acoustic Alchemy and Fourplay were as awesome as we expected, two of our favorite jazz bands. We'll definitely be going again next year.

  • A cool Jazz day

An assemblage of some really good jazz groups. A mellow time in a great venue.

  • Bromberg was great

A venue like the winery, coupled with the outstanding artists......well, you should have been there!

  • Jackiem Joyner is awesome

by FedwayJ on 8/10/10Chateau Ste Michelle Winery - WoodinvilleRating: 4 out of 5

Even with the poor weather, Sunday at the winery was awesome. Fourplay was my main reason for being excited about Sunday. Joyner turn out to be the "Sunday Suprise".

  • acoustic alchemy stole the show!!!!!

by dijoh on 8/10/10Chateau Ste Michelle Winery - WoodinvilleRating: 4 out of 5

My first time at kwzj music fest. It was more than I expected it would be :) The setting was awesome as was the day. No rain. The people that were sitting around us were friendly but not overly. Lot's of wine & smiles were seen every where we looked. Jackiem Joyner was outstanding! Brian Bromberg was equally as good. But I thought that Acoustic Alchemy was by far the highlight of the day/evening. They played flawless music that stirred the emotion of ones being. Love the concept of two acoustic guitars together. Fourplay was a let down. I had the pleasure of seeing them at Jazz Alley last year & the energy that was there was not felt Sunday. Bummer about Nathan East being out & that Larry Carlton left the group, but there didn't seem much holding them together as a group. Bob James is outstanding alone as is Harvey Mason. Disappointed with Fourplay :(

  • Awesome

It was an awesome day. The concert was wonderful. The crowd was out of site and my date was perfect. A perfectly awesome day!.

Despite the weather, the talent was fabulous! WIll go agin next year!

  • Lineup was very weak

by GivingUp on 8/9/10Chateau Ste Michelle Winery - WoodinvilleRating: 3 out of 5

I've attended the festival since it started, but will not be returning in the future, if the lineup isn't stronger. The quality of the music has continue to get worse in recent years.
