FOURPLAY IN CONCERT:

Iconic smooth jazz quartet Fourplay hold the distinction of being the only music group in history to be recognized by the United States Congress, and it's easy to see why. Comprised of some of the best jazz musicians in the world, the supergroup never fails to dazzle with their virtuosic playing and electrifying chemistry on stage, creating an outsized live sound that belies their humble setup. Featuring selections from more than two decades of recording, Fourplay's 2013 shows hit all the right notes, building excitement for their 2014 tour dates.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Formed in 1990 by Bob James, Harvey Mason, Nathan East, and Lee Ritenour, Fourplay made their self-titled album debut in 1991, topping the Billboard Contemporary Jazz Albums chart for a whopping 33 weeks.  Their potent blend of pop, R&B, and smooth jazz clearly struck a chord with audiences — 1993 sophomore album Between the Sheets was a similar success, also topping the charts and receiving a Grammy nomination. Over the years, they've been joined on their recordings by a range of celebrated pop vocalists including Phil Collins, Patti Austin, and Babyface, and they hold the honor of being the only musical group ever honored by the United States Congress. With a host of highly anticipated tour dates scheduled for 2014, fans eagerly await a follow-up album to 2012's lauded Esprit de Four.

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:

"These guys are the most professional, tight, hard playing SMOOTH jazz band I've had the pleasure of seeing live. They played continuously and ebulliently for almost 2 hours!"

"It's hard to believe that two guitars, a piano and drums can put out the sound that Fourplay does. What a talented foursome."

"The musicianship was impeccable, the mood was enchanting, and the energy was electric."

  • KWJZ 2010 Music Festival at Chateau was fabulous!

by Anonymous on 8/9/10Chateau Ste Michelle Winery - WoodinvilleRating: 5 out of 5

I attended on Sunday when the lineup included Jackiem Joyner, Brian Bromberg, Acoustic Alchemy, and Fourplay. All four acts were terrific, and all the musicians genuinely seemed to be enjoying themselves and the crowd. The crowd was enthusiastic but never out of control (although there was that one moment at the very end of Acoustic Alchemy's set that had us whipped into a frenzy !! . . .) The set up of the grounds for the event was great--those in the more expensive seats near the stage didn't block the views of those who were out on the lawn, and the amenities were conveniently located for all. Arrival, parking, departures, and bag checks for contraband were all handled smoothly and respectfully with the help of county law enforcement. I definitely plan to attend this event again!

  • Sunday lineup spectacular

by SoulMac on 8/9/10Chateau Ste Michelle Winery - WoodinvilleRating: 5 out of 5

I loved both days of the festival but Sunday was truly stellar. Jackeem Joyner started the day off so strong and it never let up - just got stronger. Only complaint is that the performers didn't bring enough CDs in. There were long lines long after the last CDs were sold - especially for Jackeem Joyner and Acoustic Alchemy. Saturday all were good but Darren Rahn was exceptional as was the AWB and to have them together for the encore finale was awesome. Abraham was a surprise and such a bright light. Great job with the lineup! I'll be back next year as always.

  • KWJZ Music Festival Great as Usual!

by Snooptheoriginal on 8/9/10Chateau Ste Michelle Winery - WoodinvilleRating: 5 out of 5

This was the second of a two day event for me! Just the fact that it didn't rain was a great plus! Also, this was the first time for some friends that we invited. They said it was really enjoyable. And that they would return? I've been to effectively all the KWJZ Music Festivals from it's inception. And I have never been disappointed! I heard a terrible rumor though? That the Festival was in it's last season? That there weren't enough sponsors to continue? And that the station was in financial trouble? Please tell me that this isn't true!

  • 2010 KWJZ Jazz Festival -- Day 2

by FlowerMan85 on 8/9/10Chateau Ste Michelle Winery - WoodinvilleRating: 4 out of 5

As always -- a well planned and fun even! All of the artists did a great job -- even the very young -- Jackiem Joyner was engaging -- like a seasoned veteran -- and did an impressive first set. Brian Bromberg did an equally solid set -- but, I'm not certain the Chateau is the ideal envirnoment for some his quieter, more intricate riffs. For my money -- Acoustic Alchemy made the show. We're big AA fans -- and have followed them since their earliest days. They are alaways outstanding -- whether in a small venue (...we once saw Nick & Greg play an all acoustic set -- without a backing band at the old "Backstage" in Ballard) -- or, a large open-air environment like the Chateau. My biggest complaint is that they just don't get to play long enough. Fourplay -- and the inimitable Bob James -- were very good...but, I would have preferred that they come on as the third act -- and have AA close the show. I admit (...being a fairly rabid AA fan) -- I'm a little biased -- but, Myles and Greg could have brought the house down with one of their high energy homages to Carlos Santana!

I have been going to this event for the last twelve years only missing the first concert. I always have a great time with friends and listening to the amazing music... The lineup was good, although in the past it was hard to figure out what day I was going, because the lineup was so great but this years line up, was just ok... although i was pleasently surprised with the first two acts on Sunday...again this event is always fun!!!!!

  • coolest festival yet!

by NWCoastwatcher on 8/9/10Chateau Ste Michelle Winery - WoodinvilleRating: 4 out of 5

Everything was great except for the weather. This year it rained on Saturday and was overcast and cool on Sunday. This was quite a change from past years, when hot and sunny was the norm.

  • Always a good line-up

by redhead854 on 8/9/10Chateau Ste Michelle Winery - WoodinvilleRating: 5 out of 5

This is my 8th KWJZ Jazz Festival. Every year brings a great line-up. The venue is fabulous, the crowd always friendly. I'll be back next year.

  • Threeplay and Saxplay

    by agh032 on 4/24/10Birchmere - AlexandriaRating: 4 out of 5

Excellent icons! The Monday concert at the Birchmere is a distant memory to 5 star virtuoso musicans.,With Chuck Loeb playing here tonight ,Iam compelled to express my disapointment .Fourplay with so much of their sucess built around great guitar composition could wait til Chuck joined the group before doing this make up show from the blizzard of 09-10.In tight economic times at $250.00, for three, they could have rescheduled when a guitaritst was available.I'm also am disappointed with Larry Carlton.Mr 335 could have taken the time to perform two 2009 make up concerts for his fans that were contracted in 09.Kirk was good,Harvey and.Bob were excellent, Nathan who I.ve seen with Stevie and Eric Clapon was great but stretched thin creating the Fourplay aura minus a guitarist. Good concert however ,good ears know....DC.VA.Md fanbase deserves better

  • Awesome time for the soul

by ZinniaDC on 4/17/10Birchmere - AlexandriaRating: 5 out of 5

Don't miss the time when they come to town. They were awesome and showed they have alot of fun making music. The 5 star rating of amazing really does not express the joy they place in your soul with their gifted ablities. Continue on Fourplay.

Fourplay was the bomb! The concert with Kirk Whalum was unexpected but awesome. I really enjoy the performance and would recommend it to everyone.

  • Newcomer to Birchmere

    by trojan90 on 4/14/10Birchmere - AlexandriaRating: 5 out of 5

I purchased the tickets months ago but due bad weather the show was pushed back. Because of the schedule change, i could not attend the concert, but my friend who went in my place raved on and on about Fourplay. The quality of sound, style, and professionalism just overwhelmed her. This particular show Kirk Whalum was the guest replacement to Larry Carlton. The saxophone is her favorite instrument, but this night she became a true music lover.

  • Sometimes Substitutions Are a Good Thing

by jdogdaddy on 4/14/10Birchmere - AlexandriaRating: 5 out of 5

I read on Fourplay's website that Larry Carlton had left the group to go solo and that his replacement was going to be Chuck Loeb -- Whoa! Chuck didn't make the performance and Fourplay's last minute sub was saxophonist Kirk Whalum -- Double Whoa! What an awesome performance!

  • by Anonymous on 4/13/10Birchmere - AlexandriaRating: 5 out of 5

Awesome performance! Great energy with such talented musicians. Would go see them again and tell friends and family to go to!

  • Unexpected treat

    by LennyRX8 on 4/13/10Birchmere - AlexandriaRating: 4 out of 5

I was full of anticipation as I stood in line at the Birchmere Monday afternoon, waiting to get the chance to see the legendary Fourplay in a concert that was postphoned in February due to the "Snowpocalypse" that hit the DC area. My anticipation was suddenly deflated when I heard that Larry Carlton was not going to playing. What? No Carlton? Bummer! But after sitting down and having a few drinks, I was pleasantly surprised to see Kirk Whalum onstage, "subbing" for Carlton. But how would they sound? Could the venerable saxman adequately fill in for the legendary guitar man? From the very first introduction and throughout the set, the audience was obviously thrilled at the substitution. Fourplay, whose current lineup consists of keyboardist Bob James, bassist Nathan East, guitarist Larry Carlton and drummer Harvey Mason, did not miss a beat and I ended up howling for an encore at the end of the set, and left satisfied from the good food, company and fantastic set. Good job guys...loved you Kirk!

  • Third Time Is A Charm - Fourplay

by JWCHEEK on 4/13/10Birchmere - AlexandriaRating: 5 out of 5

Fourplay was at their best that I have seen them!!

  • Fourplay without Larry Carlton

by Enormix on 4/13/10Birchmere - AlexandriaRating: 3 out of 5

Many fans only found out that Larry Carlton had left the group to be replace by Chuck Loeb on the night of this concert and Chuck could not make this show so there was no guitar. Fourplay without a guitar is like Threeplay, no Larry Carlton, and no Chuck Loeb. Boo! Fourplay did a good job trying to make the best of a less than ideal situation. The band was very limited in what they could do because of the absence of a guitar; many of the songs did not carry the same punch as the original tracks. Many fans left very disappointed even though they did add special guest Kirk Whalum. One fan put it like this "I came to see Fourplay not Fourplay featuring Kirk Whalum" the same fan went on to say "It almost sounds like a Kenny G concert". One thing is clear, now you see why they call a band a band, it a total group effort and when one part is missing, it's not a total effort. Too Bad Fourplay.
