About

The hit Los Angeles FOR THE RECORD series breathes a new life into the movies by adapting the works and movie soundtracks of iconic directors into a theatrical concert setting. “For The Record: Dear John Hughes” includes acclaimed coming of age 1980′s teen films Sixteen Candles, The Breakfast Club, Weird Science, Pretty In Pink, Some Kind of Wonderful and Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.
2015 marks the 30th anniversary of the release of The Breakfast Club, the John Hughes classic which epitomizes one of the most influential pop cultural contributions of our time and changed the way many young people looked at everything from class to friendship, love to sex and fashion to music. These themes are explored throughout “For The Record Presents Dear John Hughes” by this ‘brat pack’ for the modern age that includes leading talent from stage, the recording world and screen as well as rising stars – all embodying iconic movie characters and giving them new musical voices.
The immersive concert mash-up, where iconic music and moments from the John Hughes’ movies spring to life with an epic new wave inspired soundtrack, includes songs such as Don’t You Forget About Me, We Are Not Alone, If You Leave, Pretty In Pink, If You Were Here, True as well as classic moments like Danke Shoen, Twist And Shout, Try A Little Tenderness and many more.

Dear John Hughes - LOVED IT!

by acuchris92 on 3/11/15Broadway Playhouse at Water Tower Place - Chicago

If you're a product of the 80's (like I am), and you loved "The Breakfast Club", "Sixteen Candles", etc., then you will thoroughly enjoy "Dear John Hughes." The vocals are a little weak in some spots (the fellas are AMAZING!), but the group numbers and harmonies are fantastic. A word of warning - if you HAVEN'T seen all the movies, you might not get it...but I took my 12-year old (who has only seen "Ferris" and the TV-edited version of "The Breakfast Club") and he still liked it. So what are you waiting for? Buy a ticket...NOW!

    The Geek Rules!

by MSTN on 3/10/15Broadway Playhouse at Water Tower Place - Chicago

We really know all we need to know about John Hughes several successful "coming of age" films, already. We probably saw all or at least some of them at one point or another. When we did, we all calculated, consciously or subconsciously, where we ourselves in high school might fit into the mix of characters. That's what makes the John Hughes films so memorable - We interject ourselves into the mix. Hey, it's not Shakespeare, maybe, but it IS good entertainment!!! And, if you're a guy, you never forgot the first time you saw Demi Moore on screen. What makes this musical rehash so very special is twofold: One, the way the cast really and truly throws their hearts into their craft. They are all deeply engaged in entertaining the audience. Two, the incredible talents they demonstrate in doing so. The original casts of these movies - even the great Otis Redding, himself - would get a kick out of seeing this. After a show, the last thing I anticipated was seeing the cast and the band coming right out into the lobby immediately after the show to mingle and chat with the audience. They really seemed to care about us folks out there in the "peanut gallery"! I imagine we will see more of all of these talented artists.

    Amazing Show and Cast

by PaysonFan on 3/10/15Broadway Playhouse at Water Tower Place - Chicago

The show was incredible and captured the quirkiness of John Hughes and the energy of the cast and interaction wth the audience was amazing. The entire cast and musicians received a well earned standing ovation from the packed house. This is a must see show for anyone in Chicago or Los Angeles.

Dear John Hughes didn't quite reach the mark

by Deborah0220 on 3/10/15Broadway Playhouse at Water Tower Place - Chicago

Full enjoyment of this production was dependent on knowing the movies verbatim. The sound wasn't great. The talent, at times, fell short.

Loved the nostalgia, but also the production.

by BRBRBRB on 3/10/15Broadway Playhouse at Water Tower Place - Chicago

First, a truly talented cast. Some great actors but also some terrific voices. As for the show, if you're a fan of the John Hughes "teenager" movies, you'll love this trip down memory lane. A lively, entertaining and very well thought-out show . . . just awesome!

I hope John Hughes wasn't watching

by Anonymous on 3/10/15Broadway Playhouse at Water Tower Place - Chicago

Can I get my money back? And the two hours? My friends and I think we could make a better production of this in our living room. I would suggest that the cast get rid of the "band" and lip sync these songs. Their karaoke versions were awful. That's the only possibility to save this show.

Dear John Hughes, you were great!

by HUGhEsFan on 3/10/15Broadway Playhouse at Water Tower Place - Chicago

I was not sure exactly what to expect when I got these tickets, but I was very happy I did. The mix of music, movie lines, and crowd interaction made this a very memorable performance. I would recommend seats in the second section since performers move around theater.

    Wonderful

by Chershow on 3/9/15Broadway Playhouse at Water Tower Place - Chicago

The show really brought memories flooding back. The cast was great. Didn't know Rumor Willis could sing. And sing she did. Left of Center by Suzanne Vega is one of my old favorites. The whole cast could really belt out a tune. Just a montage of music from the movies I really liked & could relate to in the 80's. Was a great night & great play!! RIP John Hughes; he would be proud!!

A very unique and nostalgic experience. The story was a little disjointed, but the performers were amazing, especially Michael Thomas Grant as the Brain. This show made me want to join in on the fun onstage and then go home and watch a marathon of my favorite John Hughes movies. It was definitely one of my top 5 shows of the year.
