About

Ireland's premier post-punk quintet Fontaines D.C. are generating a reputation for being one of indie rock's most exciting acts. Across five years and three albums, the five-piece have attracted fans the world over with their abrasive, punk-inspired vocals, catchy melodies, and quick-paced rhythms -- a formula that grows even more powerful in a live setting.

Band members Grian Chatten (vocals), Carlos O'Connell (guitar), Conor Curley (guitar), Conor Deegan III (bass), and Tom Coll (drums) originally met in Dublin, where they were attending college at the British and Irish Modern Music Institute. Bonding over a shared love of poetry, they soon began writing their own verses and self-releasing singles.

The band initially called themselves "The Fontaines" after a character in The Godfather (Johnny Fontane, the godson of Vito Corleone), but they added the "D.C." (for Dublin City) after learning that a band in Los Angeles were also called The Fontaines.

In May 2017, D.C. Fontaines released the single "Liberty Belle," a reference to Dublin's Liberties neighborhood. That was followed by "Hurricane Laughter"/"Winter In the Sun." The next year, D.C. Fontaines released "Chequeless Reckless"/"Boys In The Better Land" and "Too Real." Their star rose in the U.S. when Seattle radio station KEXP invited them to play an in-studio set, and D.C. Fontaines were then signed to prominent indie label Partisan Records.

In 2019, D.C. Fontaines released their debut album, Dogrel. The name is a reference to "Doggerel," another name for working-class Irish poetry, or "poetry of the people." That same year, D.C. Fontaines toured extensively, stopping in 50 cities throughout Ireland, Europe, and North America. They also made their late-night TV debut on "The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon," performing "Boys in the Better Land."

In 2020, D.C. Fontaines released their sophomore album, A Hero's Death, which earned them a nomination for Best Rock Album at the 2021 Grammy Awards. They also returned to "The Tonight Show," where they performed their album's title track.

In early 2022, D.C. Fontaines announced their third studio album, Skinty Fia, and shared a lead single, "Jackie Down the Line." Now that they are more established, D.C. Fontaines have been widely recognized as the ringleaders in a wave of '20s post-punk revivalist acts from the UK, including IDLES, Dry Cleaning, Shame, and more.

    Fontaines DC was fire

by Susan on 10/9/22House of Blues Boston - Boston

After being postponed, this show was eagerly awaited. The band came out throwing roses to fans and I caught one of Grian’s, a great start. They were ferocious and fun from start to finish. Great mosh pit filled with young and olds. One of the best post punk rock bands out there. Would love to see them again soon!

    Great Show

by Carlos on 10/8/22Spirit Hall - Pittsburgh

Really amazing to see an up and coming band in a small venue. It's hard to have enough good things to say about Fontaines DC. Spirit Hall is a cool place for a show. Drove from Columbus Ohio. Worth the trip!

    Hallowed Ground

by Bhill on 10/8/22The Stone Pony - Asbury Park

Walked into the Stone Pony and literally wanted to bow down! Lived in Jersey all my life, born and raised, had never been there. Loved the venue and hope to be back again soon. Fontaines “ are too real for ya…!” Fantastic show and an opener in Wunderhorse that was worthy of the the headliner. Met some new peeps, drank a couple of rounds and a great nite was had!!!

Best break out band since the Pixies

by Jim in Pittsburgh on 10/7/22Spirit Hall - Pittsburgh

First off the venue was pretty small but incredibly easy to get in and get out and the sound was perfect. I see a lot of live music and way to often the modern sound is electric bass centric. The sound for this show was absolutely perfect. Grian is an amazing frontman with a mix of energy, passion and showmanship that fed off the audience. I was not expecting such a passionate performance but he put put it all out there. Carlos and Conor were both amazing guitarists that complemented each others sound. Both switched through a variety of guitars that rendered totally different sounds to the mix. Their bassist Conor added a lot of backing vocals and their drummer Tom was wearing a Sleep shirt - one of my fav bands - and he played his ass off the entire time. The show was a 10/10 and I wish the band continued success and appreciate that they stopped in Pittsburgh.

    Crushed it!!

by HannahJane on 10/7/22Spirit Hall - Pittsburgh

These lads give me serious late 70s postpunk throwback vibes, with a dark, seething energy that is entirely their own. And what a show!! Fully engaged performance, start to finish, with the kind of sustained tension and electricity that is the hallmark of the best concert experiences. As anticipated, their live performance dwarfs any possible recording they could make - now the albums are enjoyable more as post-concert memories, almost like photos. Wow. Absolutely worth checking out - screamed my head off and loved every second!

    Fontaines in San Diego.

by C on 9/19/22The Observatory North Park - San Diego

First opportunity I've had to be able to catch 'em live in the States. And did they deliver or what!!! Grian has to be the best front man on the planet. Almost manic, never static. But at the same time not distracting from the other guys. Very tight outfit and supetb crowd. Never had to goad us into getting immersed in the atmosphere. They create it, they inspire it. You're sucked in from the first seconds. If they aren't on your bucket list, add them......at the top!!!

    Best Band in the World

by Cat on 9/19/22The Observatory North Park - San Diego

The band was absolutely amazing! 10/10! However security should do more to keep people safe like removing roudy drunk girls that start fights and invade other people’s personal space to try and squeeze in the front row when they didn’t wait hours in line.

    Fountaines LA

by Luis on 5/21/22The Regent Theater - Los Angeles

Fountaines DC did not disappoint. From the first song to the encore. The band rocked out and the crowd was engaged enjoying every minute. My only regret is not having tickets to both shows. Just Mustard opened up and they put together a good show. No banter, no talking, just performing their set.

by KenMundy on 5/21/22The Regent Theater - Los Angeles

Love this show. I've been a fan of the band for some time and was super happy I got to see them live (though it took a cross-coubntry flight). The sound was excellent and the band was really on. It really couldn't have gone better.
