    Follies was "Foltastic"

by GretchenSinger on 9/26/11Marquis Theatre - New York

The intense nature of the characters emotions were brilliantly portrayed by this revival cast. Stellar performances by Bernadette Peters and company. The only disappointment was Phyllis's dance routine. While her acting ability was spot on, singing second, I'd have to put her dancing third. Kudo's for a good effort. But a stronger lead is needed for this role. Just sayin'.

    Hmmm............FOLLIES

by jerseyboy2 on 9/26/11Marquis Theatre - New York

FOLLIES is such an icon of a show....and this is probably the best production we will see..........but I just wished I liked the show itself more. It just doesn't grab me....there are some wonderful moments and songs but there are also so many ho hum moments also. A rather big deal has been made about the orchestra being a big 28 piece-er in order to do justice to the score.....it just didn't sound that lush to me....maybe it was the tiny pit it was confined to......I'll take the South Pacific orchestra at Lincoln Center any time! I know this is a sacrilege but I thought Bernadette Peters was the weak link....just plain boring. Jan Maxwell, on the other hand, was dynamite! It is a very good show and should be seen by fans of Broadway, but I left feeling wholly unsatisfied both times I saw it!

We didn't love the show. Seats were great and the cast was superb. We felt the show is outdated

    Spectacular FOLLIES!!

by Ronsdivas on 9/26/11Marquis Theatre - New York

What a fabulous show...especially with the 4 main principals (Peters/Maxwell/Burstein/Raines)..add to the mix Elaine Paige/Jane Houdyshell/Rosalind Elias/Susan Watson/Terri White/Michael Hayes....and you have a thrilling unforgetable theatrical entertainment. Sondheim's score is one of the best...and with a 28 piece orchestra....it's a knockout. NOT TO BE MISSED!!

    Follies can be enjoyable

by RONT on 9/26/11Marquis Theatre - New York

The actors are superb and the staging is imaginative. The show is long but all the actors get to strut their stuff and it's good. If you're a theatre goer and know the cast, you'll enjoy each one showing what they can do.

    Follies put me to sleep

by whore on 9/26/11Marquis Theatre - New York

The first act of the Follies was slow, disjointed and extremely disappointing. I went hoping to see the incredible Bernadette Peters at her best and although her acting performance was great, her voice was not at its best. The show itself had a dismal "plot" and although the second act was better, I probably would not recommend this to anyone.

FOLLIES - Marquis Theatre, New York

by bklynny on 9/26/11Marquis Theatre - New York

Bernadette Peters is a jewel whom I last enjoyed in "A Little Night Music." Eagerly arriving early for "Follies," I was transported to memories of Vaudeville days with etherial background music, gaily chattering voices and tap-dancing while a post-war mood was created by a Marquis disguised in drab and well-worn fabric. I loved everything about "Follies": the story line, the interpretation (directing?), the cast, the music (SONDHEIM!), the set and those "Follies" costumes (Wow!). My take-away thought on the way home: 'This play is a salute to actors, and everyone involved in theatre. They are to be appreciated and honored for keeping this art alive through wars, depressions and recessions. Europe had Moliere, England has the Royal Shakespeare company, and The United States has American Theatre.' Well done and many thanks to all.

    Go see Follies now!

by NCCT on 9/26/11Marquis Theatre - New York

I have seen dozens of musicals on and off Broadway and this is one of the best. The company members are all triple threats -- they can sing, dance and act. My favorite part of the production, however, was the clothes. Glorious clothes! Gregg Barnes has given each of the actors exactly the tools that they need to fully realize their characters. And he has given the scenery some gorgeous moving parts in the form of the Ghosts. Bravo!

The performers were talented; however, the play itself was depressing.

    Thanks

by NYCAttorney on 9/26/11Marquis Theatre - New York

Thanks to all the talented people who brought this show back to the stage where it belongs. Follies may have been too dark for the seventies, but after forty years it's the perfect antidote to Broadway as usual, a special cocktail of rue and razzmatazz. See it!

    Stunning revival!

by WestVillage1 on 9/25/11Marquis Theatre - New York

Jan Maxwell steals the show, Elaine Paige stops it with "I'm still here". Danny Burstein, Jayne Housyshell & Terri White all give terrific performances, do not miss this Sondheim classic with lush costumes and orchestra!

    How to Enjoy a Classic

by Sunninbob on 9/25/11Marquis Theatre - New York

If the term "classic" brings an imagine of old and boring, think again. "Follies" is a classic in the sense of being more than a musical performance, it is a truly historic musical event. As each actor or actress steps into the footlights, each brings a more exciting voice than the person who preceded him or her. Tremendous voices presented in a truly first class setting. The showgirls moving continually in the background did not distract -- they added to the mystique of a magical evening in the theater, A wonderful "classic" event.

    The show was a hit

by Komicbat on 9/25/11Marquis Theatre - New York

This is a marvelous production. Much better than the version that I saw about 10 years ago. The music is as beautiful as every and the cast is great. The only negative is that Bernadette Peters' reputation is so incredible that she can no longer live up to it. She very good, but I expected better.

    Follies was a Triumph

by newplateau on 9/24/11Marquis Theatre - New York

I have long been a fan of Stephen Sondheim's Follies, have owned the score for decades and have seen the "in Concert" adaptation. The full staging of the show was wonderful beyond my expectation. Every cast member was superlative. I would highly recommend Follies to any and every theater lover. It is a MUST SEE
