About

British-based indie rock band Foals was originally formed by Jack Bevan and Yannis Philippakis. The duo then brought in Andrew Mears, Walter Gervers and Jimmy Smith as additional members. Following the release of their first single “Try This on Your Piano” in 2006, Mears left the group to focus on his other band, Youthmovies. The remaining members of the group continued, along with new recruit, Edwin Congreave.

The group went on to release their first two major singles in 2007 with “Hummer” and “Mathletics.” Their debut album, Antidotes, was released in 2008, followed by  Total Life in 2010. Their most successful album is their 2013 release Holy Fire. They’ve also released a number of EPs from their live shows, including Live At Liars Club and two performances at the iTunes Festival in 2008 and 2010. The band also recorded and released a video of their performance at the Albert Hall.

Known for their stellar live show,  the band has undertaken a number of tours across the world. This includes dates in 2014 in the UK and Ireland, as well as a joint tour in the US with Cage the Elephant. In 2013 they played a number of festivals, including a headline slot at Latitude Festival. The band have also received critical acclaim for their performances. In 2013 they won a Q Award for Best Live Act. The group have also received two NME nominations in the same category. During their career, Foals have been nominated twice for the Mercury Music Prize, once in 2010 for the Total Life Forever album and again in 2013 for Holy Fire. In 2010 the single “Spanish Sahara” was nominated for an Ivor Novello award. This song also took the award for Best Track at the 2011 NME Awards.

The band’s influences are extremely mixed. They include the likes of Arthur Russell, The Redneck Manifesto, Harmonia and Talking Heads. Their music has been used in a number of television series, including Entourage, Misfits, Outcasts and Skins. Throughout their career, Foals have drawn massive crowds of fans, packing venues like the 9:30 Club and The Fillmore to capacity.

    Foals woke Seattle up!

by Invinumveritas on 4/13/11Showbox at the Market - Seattle

After a solid performance by The naked and famous the shoebox crowd was somehow numbed by the talented but uninspired Freelance Whales. Then came Yannis with his incredibly concentrated and layered personality. He totally dominated the stage and the crowd that needed to be woken up with a coupple of stage diving and few showers. the Foals are a great live band - forceful, emotional but never ordinary.

Great line up at an awesome venue falls flat

by Moregon on 4/13/11Showbox at the Market - Seattle

I was really excited for this show. I've been a Foals fan for a while and just recently got turned onto Freelance Whales. However, Freelance Whale's lead singer was a flat out disappointed. He seemed to be having a hard time finishing lines without running out of breath and staying on key. The band had a hard time harmonizing. There was a lot of banjo on the album but it only came out on the very last song of the set. The Market can sound amazing (Foals proved that) but the mix for Freelance was bad... hardly any vocals, the bass was buried and the glockenspiel was tearing a whole in my ears the whole time (for some reason almost every member of the band had to take turns banging on that thing perpetually). I was glad to see them leave the stage at the end of their set... Foals was a different story entirely. They cam out and started their set off with the opening track from Total Life which set the tone (sleepy). They played a few songs off of Antidotes and a few more off of Total Life and then went into some impromptu(?) variations and instrumental bridges between songs. It sounded real good (the mix was great. CD quality) but these digressions left me bored and uninterested. I wish they would have kept this aspect to a minimal and spent more time going through more of the songs from the albums... Overall an average, mildly forgettable night...

It was amazing. Foals are so great live, they get down, and have lots of energy, and they are also really nice. The El Rey is a really nice venue too, just don't crowd surf because security tackle you haha

    There is this thing called…

by Alejobulala on 10/20/10El Rey Theatre - Los Angeles

YANNIS! this guys is an incredible front man with awesome audience interaction. I mean the guy spit water on people, stage dived, climed up walls and snuk up behind me during the encore! He did this all without missing a beat to a song. The band as a whole was just that, one whole. They were in sync through out, animated, and as lively as the music. No statues with guitars here! Foals; one of my favorite band and now my favorite band LIVE!

    Energy defined!

by Cicatriz98 on 10/20/10El Rey Theatre - Los Angeles

Nuclear reactors on Russian subs dont emit the energy the Foals did Monday night in El Rey. The crowd was so lost in the reaction between sonic pulses being transmitted from the stage and their flesh that they didnt mind being cooled down by water spat from Yannis mouth. Foal's performance from being to end would leave any spin class instructor in awe of how they were able to elevate everyone's heart rate for an entire 90 minutes.

The opening band was a little slow, still good, just more mellow. However, Foals brought an incredible stage presence and energy to the El Rey, which by the way, is a fantastic venue. All in all, an incredible show!

    Foals are extremely talented

by defStef on 10/7/10Masquerade - Atlanta

Foals exceeded my expectations as all the musicians are really talented and play well together. Thumping drums, funky bass and amazing melodic guitar notes! And that voice! This band should not be missed. I can't believe the singer can play guitar like that, so fast, with only his thumbnail

    Foals deliver intensity live

by Spectre69 on 10/5/10Bowery Ballroom - NEW YORK

The lead singer has an amazing presence and live delivery. The drummer hurtled them into energetic numbers, yet they managed to retain the subtlety and complexity or rhythms that make them special. If you like their sound, then definitely go see them live.

    Foals jump

by Albriffs on 10/4/10Bowery Ballroom - NEW YORK

Foals brought the goods Friday at the Bowery from the opening number to the encore. A nice mix of new and old tunes, all melding together to make one hell of a sonic tapestry. Just when you thought the intensity couldn't get any stonger, they have the ability to take it up a notch. The crowd was more than ready, and as someone who has made a residency at the Bowery it was great to see an audience really jump. Hats off to you Foals, gracias for a great show.

Foals rocked the hell out of the hall. Amazing energy from both the band and the crowd. They played every song perfectly and improvised really naturally on stage. To whomever Yannis whacked in the face with his guitar, you're the luckiest girl alive.
