About

British-based indie rock band Foals was originally formed by Jack Bevan and Yannis Philippakis. The duo then brought in Andrew Mears, Walter Gervers and Jimmy Smith as additional members. Following the release of their first single “Try This on Your Piano” in 2006, Mears left the group to focus on his other band, Youthmovies. The remaining members of the group continued, along with new recruit, Edwin Congreave.

The group went on to release their first two major singles in 2007 with “Hummer” and “Mathletics.” Their debut album, Antidotes, was released in 2008, followed by  Total Life in 2010. Their most successful album is their 2013 release Holy Fire. They’ve also released a number of EPs from their live shows, including Live At Liars Club and two performances at the iTunes Festival in 2008 and 2010. The band also recorded and released a video of their performance at the Albert Hall.

Known for their stellar live show,  the band has undertaken a number of tours across the world. This includes dates in 2014 in the UK and Ireland, as well as a joint tour in the US with Cage the Elephant. In 2013 they played a number of festivals, including a headline slot at Latitude Festival. The band have also received critical acclaim for their performances. In 2013 they won a Q Award for Best Live Act. The group have also received two NME nominations in the same category. During their career, Foals have been nominated twice for the Mercury Music Prize, once in 2010 for the Total Life Forever album and again in 2013 for Holy Fire. In 2010 the single “Spanish Sahara” was nominated for an Ivor Novello award. This song also took the award for Best Track at the 2011 NME Awards.

The band’s influences are extremely mixed. They include the likes of Arthur Russell, The Redneck Manifesto, Harmonia and Talking Heads. Their music has been used in a number of television series, including Entourage, Misfits, Outcasts and Skins. Throughout their career, Foals have drawn massive crowds of fans, packing venues like the 9:30 Club and The Fillmore to capacity.

The Naked and Famous canceled and I didn't really care about seeing any of the other bands, so I was very disappointed.

Freelance Whales were amazing. Unfortunately The Naked and Famous couldn't be there, but the upside to it was that the Freelance Whales were able to play longer. Before my friend and I went to the concert, I didn't really know of Foals. But because I knew Freelance Whales and The Naked and Famous, I assumed the music would be similar. When Foals got on stage, they were unfriendly and really did not try to know the crowd or get everyone excited. It was a disappointment to say the least.

Three cheers for bands ... thumbs down for sound

by tmactmac1957 on 4/25/11Beaumont Club - Kansas City

Too bad the sound system at the Beaumont Club left so much to be desired Friday night becauyse the three bands that took the stage deserved better. I was pleasantly surprised by the Naked and the Famous ... especially the female singer ... she has a great set of pipes. Freelance Whales -- the band we went to see -- did not disappoint, although the sound system really showed its issues with the Whales intricate combination of harmonies, bells and a squeeze box. Although we weren't there to see the headlining Foals, they were tight. The drummer really drives that band and being an old hippie drummer myself, I enjoyed seeing that. What a rhytmic delight. But the sound, to put it bluntly, sucked. Still, it's a small venue, which we like, and the crowd was well behaved -- though how most of those on the floor stood all night without moving is beyond me. I just had to dance!

by samwisel on 4/24/11Beaumont Club - Kansas City

Alright, for a smaller venue, it rocked. it had enough room, it wasn't too hot and nasty, and the sound was amazing. not to mention, being right up front i could see all the guys in the band. they did such a great job, i went to go see arcade fire two days before, and i enjoyed my time watching foals so much more. i hope to see them again if they are in town!

    Freelance whales stole the show!!

by BJPerkins on 4/24/11Beaumont Club - Kansas City

On Fri. Apr 22, the Beaumont club hosted The Foals with Freelance Whales and Naked and famous. The crowd seemed to be in a good mood, ready to party. Naked and Famous took the to the stage first with a beautiful performance and got the crowd jumping. After a brief little break and new drinks Freelance Whales stepped out on stage. There show was amazing and powerful all at the same time. The crowd had one big smile on their faces as people sang along and danced and you could just feel the mood generated by Freelance Whales. Freelance Whales put on such an amazing show that I think people forgot who the Foals were. The Foals had a very tough act to follow and unfortunately came up short in doing so. The Foals were sub par at best. The Show belonged to the Freelance Whales.

    Foals was beyond incredible!

by foalsrules on 4/24/11Beaumont Club - Kansas City

This live performance of Foals made me love them all the more. I was already in love with them, but now I am obsessed with them. They played passionately and enthusiasticly, making it so easy to rock out to them. Yannis Phillipakis is amazing!

    up & down show

by omfgjustacceptmynickname on 4/15/11Wonder Ballroom - Portland

I was actually a fan of all 3 bands, The Naked & Famous, Freelance Whales, and Foals. Naked & Famous did a pretty good set, but not amazing. Freelance Whales was the biggest letdown I have seen in a long while, the singer couldn't sing in key, and they had to slow down multiple songs and he was still running out of breath. Foals was awesome, they sounded great and had a good stage presence. As one of my friends pointed out they are kind of a "jam band", and I agree they did overdo it a little, you don't need to have a 3 minute instrumental ending to every slow song.

    Foals @ Wonder Ballroom

    by BMcBride81 on 4/15/11Wonder Ballroom - Portland

If you're going to the Wonder Ballroom arrive early. Probably the only complaint of the evening was driving around for 15 minutes trying to find a parking spot. The venue is located in a residential area so your average parking lots are not available. Foals put on a fantastic show. It was my first time seeing them and it was worth the wait. Can't wait til they come back.

    Awesome Show

by jaywon on 4/15/11Wonder Ballroom - Portland

The naked and famous and freelance whales opened for this band they both rocked it. Then the lead singer of foals told the crowd he was on mushrooms (if he was he sure knows how to sing and play guitar whilst on cloud 9) He crowed surfed and chilled on the dance floor best show i've seen at this venue so far!

This show was amazing in every way. These guys rocked! When you leave the concert craving more and immediately hit play on their cd when you get back to the car, they did their job. Love it!
