About

Fiddler on the Roof on Tour

In Broadway terms, Fiddler on the Roof is a tradition unto itself. The much-loved story of Tevye the milkman's struggle to reconcile old Jewish ways with the modern world opened on Broadway in 1964 and held the record for longest-running musical — with 3,242 performances until it closed in 1970 — for nearly 10 years. The blockbuster won nine Tony Awards — including best musical, direction, and choreography — and has been revived on Broadway five times.

Producer Harold Prince hired director-choreographer Jerome Robbins to bring Sholom Aleichem's turn-of-the-19th-century Yiddish tales of life in the Anatevka shtetl, where existence is "as precarious as a fiddler on the roof," to the stage. Jerry Bock's music and Sheldon Harnick's lyrics illuminated the fading world of East European Jewry, while Joseph Stein's book brought a humorous taste of Jewish comedy's borscht belt. Painter Marc Chagall's blend of Jewish traditionalism and artistic modernism inspired the show's memorable look. Zero Mostel played Tevye, and Beatrice Arthur, of Maude television fame, portrayed Yente the matchmaker.

The most recent revival arrived in 2015, when director Bartlett Sher enhanced the show's authenticity with the help of Israeli-born choreographer Hofesh Shechter. The New York Times praised the new production as "superb" while noting how it recaptured the foot-stomping, hand-waving energy of the original.

Sher's revival, now on tour with Yehezkel Lazarov as Tevye and Maite Uzal as his wife Golde, is delighting audiences with celebratory songs like "Tradition," "If I Were a Rich Man," and "To Life (L'Chaim)," as well as beautiful melodies of love and loss such as "Sunrise, Sunset" and "Far From the Home I Love."

As part of a trend that began with The Sound of Music and The Wizard of Oz, Fiddler on the Roof fans are dressing up as Anatevkans and belting out tunes during screenings of the show's 1971 film adaptation. Their participatory zeal reflects the devotion the musical has inspired and the power of its music.

"What can we do?" asks Tevye of Golde during a moment of doubt. "It's a new world." One solution is to return to the source for cultural renewal. We may not experience the same problems as shtetl Jews in 1905 did, but Fiddler on the Roof assures us that almost any difficulty can be surmounted with great music and exuberant dancing.

The only downsize is the lack of ladies washrooms in the queen E. during intermission I waited in the lineup but was not able to use the facilities as the show announced they were going to start again. Need to figure out this problem

    There’s a fiddler in everyone’s lives

by Maz on 1/24/23Queen Elizabeth Theatre - Vancouver

Very creative stage props that worked seamless between scenes. The singing was exceptional and the emotion raw at times. Always difficult to judge a production as the image of the DVD production always comes to the front. Still, this production stayed true to the original with a twist to modern times. The dedication to Ukraine and refugees globally was a nice touch.

    Fabulous dancing

by Dimanche on 1/22/23Queen Elizabeth Theatre - Vancouver

I was the dancing that got me hooked. One tall lead male was outstanding but the total of moving figures made the stage come alive.

From start to finish, Fiddler on the Roof had you locked in. The acting and singing were on point. I laughed so hard, and cried equally as hard. A 'must see' show.

    Some things never grow old

by Cally on 1/18/23Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Calgary

As a new arrival in Calgary and as someone who had the luxury of seeing the original production on Broadway with Zero Mostel (yes, I'm that old!) I was somewhat worried that I might be disappointed. In part because I although I thought the theatre was lovely, the stage seemed small. But I need not have worried. The talented cast, swept me away. Especially Jonathon Hashimonay who played Tevye! And the stunningly beautiful voices of the young women who played his daughters. Not to mention the exuberant dancing by the ensemble. Was it equal to the original? Probably not but neither am I . Did I enjoy myself? Every minute. And the fact that the cast dedicated their performance(s) to the people of war torn Ukraine confirmed my opinion that the play ( story) is as relavent as ever.

    Fantastic!

It was a great experience and so relevant for racism against Jewish people as it happens today. I loved the ghosts for costume, dance and belief.

    Fiddler

by Shayna on 1/18/23Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Calgary

I love the music!!! The voices of the actors were wonderful. The acting was pretty good too and as I love the movie, they did pretty good. The only negative for me was not being able to see their faces from my seat on the 1st balcony. Such is life.

by Larry on 1/17/23Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium - Calgary

I bought the ticket but could not open it on my phone. I spent hours trying and then phoning Ticketmaster and Ticketsales, but all to no avail. I finally had to get a special ticket at the event. I almost gave up.

Great musical. Great dancing. Interesting story. Cast was large enough to really do the songs and dances well/big for the audience.
