About

Fiddler on the Roof on Tour

In Broadway terms, Fiddler on the Roof is a tradition unto itself. The much-loved story of Tevye the milkman's struggle to reconcile old Jewish ways with the modern world opened on Broadway in 1964 and held the record for longest-running musical — with 3,242 performances until it closed in 1970 — for nearly 10 years. The blockbuster won nine Tony Awards — including best musical, direction, and choreography — and has been revived on Broadway five times.

Producer Harold Prince hired director-choreographer Jerome Robbins to bring Sholom Aleichem's turn-of-the-19th-century Yiddish tales of life in the Anatevka shtetl, where existence is "as precarious as a fiddler on the roof," to the stage. Jerry Bock's music and Sheldon Harnick's lyrics illuminated the fading world of East European Jewry, while Joseph Stein's book brought a humorous taste of Jewish comedy's borscht belt. Painter Marc Chagall's blend of Jewish traditionalism and artistic modernism inspired the show's memorable look. Zero Mostel played Tevye, and Beatrice Arthur, of Maude television fame, portrayed Yente the matchmaker.

The most recent revival arrived in 2015, when director Bartlett Sher enhanced the show's authenticity with the help of Israeli-born choreographer Hofesh Shechter. The New York Times praised the new production as "superb" while noting how it recaptured the foot-stomping, hand-waving energy of the original.

Sher's revival, now on tour with Yehezkel Lazarov as Tevye and Maite Uzal as his wife Golde, is delighting audiences with celebratory songs like "Tradition," "If I Were a Rich Man," and "To Life (L'Chaim)," as well as beautiful melodies of love and loss such as "Sunrise, Sunset" and "Far From the Home I Love."

As part of a trend that began with The Sound of Music and The Wizard of Oz, Fiddler on the Roof fans are dressing up as Anatevkans and belting out tunes during screenings of the show's 1971 film adaptation. Their participatory zeal reflects the devotion the musical has inspired and the power of its music.

"What can we do?" asks Tevye of Golde during a moment of doubt. "It's a new world." One solution is to return to the source for cultural renewal. We may not experience the same problems as shtetl Jews in 1905 did, but Fiddler on the Roof assures us that almost any difficulty can be surmounted with great music and exuberant dancing.

Much as I was looking forward to Topol I'm sure I gave it a chance to impress me. I wasn't disappointed......it only took a few minutes to get into the story. There was some new scenery that worked smoothly.

Completely enjoyed the entire performance. The actors were awesome and my girlfriend loved every minute of it. Even as a guy normally doesn't do stuff like this I really enjoyed it.

  • Fiddle on the Roof a show to remember!

The first time i saw the show on wednesday 11/11, I was amazed by the quality of the musical. Besides being my favortie musical, it was the first time i saw it live on the stage; Topol and Susan Cella were magnificent, they seemed to compliment each other for their characters of Tevye and Golde. It was an amazing production, every single actor in the cast perfomed their part brilliantly. I loved the show so much, that I went back on sat 11/14 and sunday 11/15 for their last show. I really wish they comeback to Boston with Mr Harvey Fierstein, before the tour ends next year.

5 family members went to see Fiddler on the Roof in the Boston Opera House on 10th November 2009. Topol was magic. He stole the show. The atmosphere was electric. The Show was quite long but I have to say the first half which was two hours long went very quickly and was very entertaining. The second half could have been boring and sad but the cast were fantastic and kept the pace going with their beautiful voices and great acting. A truly fantastic show.

Topal was great and has matured with the part. The music was great and the singing was wonderful from start to finish. We went to the 2:00PM show on Sunday November 15. The cast was great and it was obvious they were enjoying themselves. I want to react to other reviews. Find your seat when the house lights are flashed and you won't miss anything. Come to the show on time and you will be amazed how you are never late! This show was enjoyable from start to finish!

  • Fiddler on the roof was rivotting!!

by nurdjt on 11/16/09Boston Opera House - BostonRating: 5 out of 5

I couldn't take my eyes off the stage for a minute... it's like when people tell you instead of yelling at your kids, you should whisper to get their attention! I was so tuned in to what was being said, that I was oblivious to where I was, and totally immersed in that simple and loving time and place! The tears rolled down my cheeks at the end, but I loved this play!!

Fiddler on the Roof with Topol was a terrific show. Highly recommend seeing him star in the show if you have the chance before he retires.

Wonderful show. We enjoyed it very much, even from the top of the balcony. Topol was amazing, and the rest of the cast were wonderful as well. It was a little bit hard for our seven year old to sit through the three hour long show, but she has seen the movie, and so, knowing the story helped her. Our ten year old had no problems and both kids were very happy to have gone to the show.

  • Fiddler on the Roof Rocked the Opera House

by PGBda on 11/16/09Boston Opera House - BostonRating: 5 out of 5

We throughly enjoyed the performance. The show is a classic and it was wonderful to see Topol as Tevya in his farewell tour. The voices were something else, the set was beautiful, the venue- gorgeous. We were in the balcony and were quite happy with our seats regardless. We would definitely recommend it! The only thing I would suggest, is that the opera house put some speakers on the upper level.

  • Fiddler on the Roof

by Topolfan on 11/16/09Boston Opera House - BostonRating: 5 out of 5

The day I heard that Fiddler on the Roof was in Boston and that Topol was going to be on stage was the day I surprised my wife by telling her we had to go and see the show. We were not disappointed. The show was everything I thought it would be and for me anyway closed a chapter in my life as I finally got to see a man on stage that influenced me forever through his music. What a voice, what a story. I can close my eyes and still see Topol on stage singing one of my all time favorites. I am now a rich man having heard him live on stage. What a memory.

  • Fiddler on the Roof with TOPOL

    by theaterfan2 on 11/16/09Boston Opera House - BostonRating: 5 out of 5

This show was incredible. I saw Topol in Fiddler on the Roof in the late 80's, early 90's and that was fantastic, but this recent, and last Topol performance was beyond words. Topol seemed to be having so much fun on stage and gave the performance of his life. Thank you Topol for all the years of amazing performances. I can't imagine anyone else in the role!!! I feel privileged to have had the opportunity to see you in your final performance in the U.S.

  • Fiddler was enjoyable

Very decent production of Fiddler. Not necessarily one of the best I have seen. Topol was good but definitely showing his age.

The play and the performances were fantastic. The Boston Opera House is a great venue to see a play. Issue with late arrivals being seated continually after the show started - it was disrupting. There should be designated times after the show starts to seat late arrivals, not on an as come basis. Also there were signs posted that the performance was for those over the age of 5. There were a couple of very young children sitting a few rows behind us who were constantly whispering and making noises that were disrupting the show for those sitting in that area. Even when asked to quiet down, it continued. I thought about complaining to the attendant at intermission, but didn't. I wish I had.

  • Topol is the Tevye

by Anonymous on 11/16/09Boston Opera House - BostonRating: 4 out of 5

After ~40 years Topol plays Tevye flawlessly. He is amazing to watch and his voice is incredible. The mama's voice is somewhat "harsh" but it was hard to tell if that was because her voice was naturally that way or that it was sung that way to reflect mama's persona.

  • Seeing Topol was a once in a lifetime experience

    by bluebird32 on 11/16/09Boston Opera House - BostonRating: 5 out of 5

The staging at the Boston Opera House was fantastic, the actors and the songs were incredible, but seeing Topol star in Fiddler on the Roof was by far the most incredible aspect of this performance!

  • Extraordinary!

by Glorifundel on 11/16/09Boston Opera House - BostonRating: 5 out of 5

I was very pleased with the performance overall, had never seen the play before. It was delightful, lively, funny, and somber. Everything you could ask for in a good play.

Topol was at his very best. The whole production was magnificent. An unforgetable night.

  • Memorable

The tickets for this show were purchased as a birthday present for my mother. She thoroughly enjoyed the show but at 82 years old found the climb up the stairs exhausting.
