About

Fiddler on the Roof on Tour

In Broadway terms, Fiddler on the Roof is a tradition unto itself. The much-loved story of Tevye the milkman's struggle to reconcile old Jewish ways with the modern world opened on Broadway in 1964 and held the record for longest-running musical — with 3,242 performances until it closed in 1970 — for nearly 10 years. The blockbuster won nine Tony Awards — including best musical, direction, and choreography — and has been revived on Broadway five times.

Producer Harold Prince hired director-choreographer Jerome Robbins to bring Sholom Aleichem's turn-of-the-19th-century Yiddish tales of life in the Anatevka shtetl, where existence is "as precarious as a fiddler on the roof," to the stage. Jerry Bock's music and Sheldon Harnick's lyrics illuminated the fading world of East European Jewry, while Joseph Stein's book brought a humorous taste of Jewish comedy's borscht belt. Painter Marc Chagall's blend of Jewish traditionalism and artistic modernism inspired the show's memorable look. Zero Mostel played Tevye, and Beatrice Arthur, of Maude television fame, portrayed Yente the matchmaker.

The most recent revival arrived in 2015, when director Bartlett Sher enhanced the show's authenticity with the help of Israeli-born choreographer Hofesh Shechter. The New York Times praised the new production as "superb" while noting how it recaptured the foot-stomping, hand-waving energy of the original.

Sher's revival, now on tour with Yehezkel Lazarov as Tevye and Maite Uzal as his wife Golde, is delighting audiences with celebratory songs like "Tradition," "If I Were a Rich Man," and "To Life (L'Chaim)," as well as beautiful melodies of love and loss such as "Sunrise, Sunset" and "Far From the Home I Love."

As part of a trend that began with The Sound of Music and The Wizard of Oz, Fiddler on the Roof fans are dressing up as Anatevkans and belting out tunes during screenings of the show's 1971 film adaptation. Their participatory zeal reflects the devotion the musical has inspired and the power of its music.

"What can we do?" asks Tevye of Golde during a moment of doubt. "It's a new world." One solution is to return to the source for cultural renewal. We may not experience the same problems as shtetl Jews in 1905 did, but Fiddler on the Roof assures us that almost any difficulty can be surmounted with great music and exuberant dancing.

  • Good production of Fidler

The performance was very good and the actors were excellent. My only issue was the lack of scenery and backdrop settings. I think this took away from the play and the production value. Granted this is a touring group and you would not expect what you would see on Broadway. However, I still believe the production could have been far better with increased scenery and backdrop settings.

I thought I was at a Broadway production. It was fabulous every moment. It was so relevant to what is happening in Ukraine.

  • Superb - just don't buy tickets near orchestra!!

by VP on 6/7/22Great Cedar Showroom at Foxwoods Resort Casino - MashantucketRating: 4 out of 5

The play, the music, the actors couldn't been better. Had third row seats - top price. What ruined the experience was after the play started with the big opening act - a six foot high bass cello in the orchestra with it's equally tall cello player stands up almost smack in line with the middle of the stage on the floor blocking the view ! ! Unbeknown to us and many others - The venue - Foxwoods Casino - does NOT HAVE an orchestra pit. So the orchestra is placed in front of the stage in the "orchestra seating " area - about the same level as the seating. There is a curtained area surrounding the orchestra which not obstructive. What shocked us all was when the cellist stood up to play - it was a total downer. Had to keep swaying side to side to see what was going on. At intermission - a few of us moved to higher vacant seats. Good thing it was the last day's Sunday afternoon show other wise we wouldn't have enjoyed the second half as much if we couldn't move. SEATS SHOULD NOT BE SOLD OR PURCHASED WITHIN THE FEW ROWS OF THE ORCHESTRA IF THE VENUE DOES NOT HAVE AN ORCHESTRA PIT. If possible - the conductor should re-position his cellist to another spot.

Show lacked any real energy, volume could of been louder. Was not impressed by Lead actor Tev.

  • Great!

by Terri on 6/1/22Great Cedar Showroom at Foxwoods Resort Casino - MashantucketRating: 5 out of 5

Although it was a little nerve racking for me as I ordered tickets late and saw that a ton of seats were still available, at every show, I thought it might be cancelled at last minute but was reassured from someone from Foxwoods. I give this touring company a lot of credit for putting on a great show with a small audience attendance. I never saw any advertising of this show, happened to catch "Fiddler" in our local Sunday paper in a very small paragraph or I would never have known it was there. My daughter and I were in a production of Fiddler in a local town's theater group in 1979 and have a kindred love for the show. Brought my granddaugbter alone and we all enjoyed it. Voices were great, choreography was great.

  • Very well done

by Jim on 6/1/22Great Cedar Showroom at Foxwoods Resort Casino - MashantucketRating: 5 out of 5

For a mid-size show with minimal staging, it was very well done. Good singing, good acting, and would've been at home in any Boston show house.

  • The Kids loved it

Exceptionally well done production. The simple sets for a touring show added just the right touches. The only noticeable improvement could be the voice timber… the cast were reasonably young and sometimes missed having the voice quality of elders in some characters , however this is easily overlooked and the only criticism of a fun, enjoyable, lively show!

The music was wonderful and the audience was loving all the clapping, dance and songs. The theme was timely with the Situation in Europe and they will dedicate their performances in the future to honor the present day war victims.
