Fiddler on the Roof on Tour

In Broadway terms, Fiddler on the Roof is a tradition unto itself. The much-loved story of Tevye the milkman's struggle to reconcile old Jewish ways with the modern world opened on Broadway in 1964 and held the record for longest-running musical — with 3,242 performances until it closed in 1970 — for nearly 10 years. The blockbuster won nine Tony Awards — including best musical, direction, and choreography — and has been revived on Broadway five times.

Producer Harold Prince hired director-choreographer Jerome Robbins to bring Sholom Aleichem's turn-of-the-19th-century Yiddish tales of life in the Anatevka shtetl, where existence is "as precarious as a fiddler on the roof," to the stage. Jerry Bock's music and Sheldon Harnick's lyrics illuminated the fading world of East European Jewry, while Joseph Stein's book brought a humorous taste of Jewish comedy's borscht belt. Painter Marc Chagall's blend of Jewish traditionalism and artistic modernism inspired the show's memorable look. Zero Mostel played Tevye, and Beatrice Arthur, of Maude television fame, portrayed Yente the matchmaker.

The most recent revival arrived in 2015, when director Bartlett Sher enhanced the show's authenticity with the help of Israeli-born choreographer Hofesh Shechter. The New York Times praised the new production as "superb" while noting how it recaptured the foot-stomping, hand-waving energy of the original.

Sher's revival, now on tour with Yehezkel Lazarov as Tevye and Maite Uzal as his wife Golde, is delighting audiences with celebratory songs like "Tradition," "If I Were a Rich Man," and "To Life (L'Chaim)," as well as beautiful melodies of love and loss such as "Sunrise, Sunset" and "Far From the Home I Love."

As part of a trend that began with The Sound of Music and The Wizard of Oz, Fiddler on the Roof fans are dressing up as Anatevkans and belting out tunes during screenings of the show's 1971 film adaptation. Their participatory zeal reflects the devotion the musical has inspired and the power of its music.

"What can we do?" asks Tevye of Golde during a moment of doubt. "It's a new world." One solution is to return to the source for cultural renewal. We may not experience the same problems as shtetl Jews in 1905 did, but Fiddler on the Roof assures us that almost any difficulty can be surmounted with great music and exuberant dancing.

Overall, I enjoyed "Fiddler" simply because it's a great story, has historical interest, is well written and has captivating music. However, the lead, Harvey Fierstein definitely detracted from the show's success simply because he doesn't have the voice to compete with the voices of the cast. In addition, there was no real chemistry between him, his wife and his daughters--a vital connection that should carry all of the performances. That lack of vocal and acting leadership led to a somewhat flat and mechanical presentation of "Fiddler". Too bad, because it's a wonderful show in and of itself and should be relatively easy to carry by the right performer.

The play was good. EVERY performer was good except the lead role of Tevye. This part was played by Harvey Fierstein. His acting was good, but his voice was just terrible. I'm sure he was just trying to put his own spin on the part - but it didn't work! He mumbled way too often and was difficult to understand. Word must be getting out - the theatre was only 1/3 full on a Friday night.

  • Fiddler, always good!

Musical was wonderful as ever - but felt Fierstein just doesn't carry it music-wise (often off key or just "noodling" with the melody). Also thought Golde's singing was weak. The rest of the cast was wonderful and the dancing terriic!

I like Harvey Fierstein but he is totally miscast in this role. His comedic moments are the highlight of the show but the songs in this show are the stars. Fierstein just can not sing. He croaks his way with his raspy voice through some songs that could have been highlight moments of the show. My favorite broadway show of all time is La Cage aux Folles which Fierstein wrote the book for.

  • Harvey Fierstein-HUGE DISAPPOINTMENT!

by Ro27 on 2/6/10Golden Gate Theatre - San FranciscoRating: 2 out of 5

Do not waste your money on this tour of Fiddler! Harvey Fierstein NEVER should have been picked to take over Topol's place in this show. He CANNOT SING and his voice is so incredibly irritating to listen to we could not even stand to hear him talk! He played Tevye poorly. I love this show and the story. Harvey Fierstein ruined it! I need to rent the movie with Topol so I can love it again. My husband and 2 friends were also very disappointed. There were times when you could not even understand what he was saying. I unfortunately bought my tickets a long time ago when I thought Topol was going to perform. I never would have bought them if I knew Harvey Fierstein was playing Tevye. HE STUNK!

  • Fiddle left alot to be desired

by TerryAllen666 on 2/5/10Golden Gate Theatre - San FranciscoRating: 3 out of 5

Fiddler is one of my favorite shows, but sadly the lead in this show (Harvey Fiernstein) left alot to be desired. The rest of the cast was good. the stage good, everything else good. You just couldnt understand a word Harvey said, and that carried over to his singing as well. Songs I know and enjoy were garbled mush..... I'd go see Fiddler again but not with this lead.

  • Fiddler is Still Wonderful !

Harvey Fierstein is a brilliant performer in the role of Tevye, and he is very competently supported by a strong and attractive cast and a fine orchestra.

The set, the costumes, the music, singing & dancing were a dose of the best medicine for the soul. Harvey Fierstein's facial expressions and his interaction with the audience was nothing short of brilliant...that is what he does best! What a great face!!! Those eyes! He is so real, so humble, so lovable. He did Tevye proud. The entire cast put their own touch on each of their beloved characters and the passion from each of them lit up the stage. I had a great time.

  • Much love for Fiddler!!

by TauraJ on 2/5/10Golden Gate Theatre - San FranciscoRating: 5 out of 5

I hadn't seen Fiddler on the roof for ages, but I was very excited when I saw it was playing here. The story is great, the dancing is wonderful fun, and all the songs were terrific. If I had the money and the time I would go see it over and over again! Harvey Fierstein was excellent -- so funny, such a character!

  • not so good!

by lnel on 2/5/10Golden Gate Theatre - San FranciscoRating: 1 out of 5

Sooooo... disappointed. What were they thinking? It was so B rated and the lead you could not understand half of what he said and his singing, what singing... This obviously was a hugh disappointment for my husband and I.

  • Harvey Firestein is Magnetic

by Jimagman on 2/5/10Golden Gate Theatre - San FranciscoRating: 5 out of 5

Saw this play ten years ago with a non-descript cast, as well as the movie. In this case Harvey Firestein brings a humor and depth the role of Tevya that is palpable. We had great, third row seats (thank you Ticketmaster) and you can his humor early in the play fade as things change for him and his family during the three hours of the show. Very moving, my wife and I both loved it. Harvey's voice takes getting used to but everyone who knows him (we saw him as Edna Turnbull on Broadway, and in a half dozen movies) expects that. The story, which I didn't appreciate years ago, was brought to life with a great supporting cast, flexible and innovative sets, and great music. Hard to hear that violin music (the Fiddler) and not be moved as things unfold.

The cast as a whole did a really good job. The night I saw it, there were a lot of understudies and they did great. Harvey's voice is a bit hard to understand when he sings. He sounded horse and it just doesn't project. He had great expressions. I was a little disappointed by the musical quality of his voice, considering he was the main character.

  • by Moretti on 2/4/10Golden Gate Theatre - San FranciscoRating: 5 out of 5

I was very impressed with the production. The choreography was great and although I doubted anyone could play Tevye as well as was done in the film, I thought Harvey Fierstein did a magnificent job. As an aside, I would say that as in all aging theatres it's increasingly more difficult to accomodate a senior clientelle. I personally didn't need assistance but a lot of people did at the matinee I atended.

  • Fierstein breathes new life into a familiar show!

by DreidelMom on 2/4/10Golden Gate Theatre - San FranciscoRating: 5 out of 5

This is one of my favorite musicals and Harvey Fierstein managed to breathe fresh life into very familiar material. With his myriad facial expressions, he could transmit the subtle feelings inherent in the role. The rest of the cast was also superb -- capable of sharing the stage with such a larger-than-life character and actor without being overshadowed.

  • Fiddler on the Roof was very enjoyable!

The show was very enjoyable and the dancing, especially the bottle dancing, was incredible! Very talented cast.

This play comes around perhaps, every 5-6 years. We have been going to SF for the last 30 years to see this. This time, the BEST.
