About

Fiddler on the Roof on Tour

In Broadway terms, Fiddler on the Roof is a tradition unto itself. The much-loved story of Tevye the milkman's struggle to reconcile old Jewish ways with the modern world opened on Broadway in 1964 and held the record for longest-running musical — with 3,242 performances until it closed in 1970 — for nearly 10 years. The blockbuster won nine Tony Awards — including best musical, direction, and choreography — and has been revived on Broadway five times.

Producer Harold Prince hired director-choreographer Jerome Robbins to bring Sholom Aleichem's turn-of-the-19th-century Yiddish tales of life in the Anatevka shtetl, where existence is "as precarious as a fiddler on the roof," to the stage. Jerry Bock's music and Sheldon Harnick's lyrics illuminated the fading world of East European Jewry, while Joseph Stein's book brought a humorous taste of Jewish comedy's borscht belt. Painter Marc Chagall's blend of Jewish traditionalism and artistic modernism inspired the show's memorable look. Zero Mostel played Tevye, and Beatrice Arthur, of Maude television fame, portrayed Yente the matchmaker.

The most recent revival arrived in 2015, when director Bartlett Sher enhanced the show's authenticity with the help of Israeli-born choreographer Hofesh Shechter. The New York Times praised the new production as "superb" while noting how it recaptured the foot-stomping, hand-waving energy of the original.

Sher's revival, now on tour with Yehezkel Lazarov as Tevye and Maite Uzal as his wife Golde, is delighting audiences with celebratory songs like "Tradition," "If I Were a Rich Man," and "To Life (L'Chaim)," as well as beautiful melodies of love and loss such as "Sunrise, Sunset" and "Far From the Home I Love."

As part of a trend that began with The Sound of Music and The Wizard of Oz, Fiddler on the Roof fans are dressing up as Anatevkans and belting out tunes during screenings of the show's 1971 film adaptation. Their participatory zeal reflects the devotion the musical has inspired and the power of its music.

"What can we do?" asks Tevye of Golde during a moment of doubt. "It's a new world." One solution is to return to the source for cultural renewal. We may not experience the same problems as shtetl Jews in 1905 did, but Fiddler on the Roof assures us that almost any difficulty can be surmounted with great music and exuberant dancing.

  • Fiddler on the Roof brings "tears and joy"

As my husband said,"Now is a good time for you to write about Fiddler." Harvey has contributed his talents to a long list of classic performers of Trevey. Not because he was from Brooklyn, or he is Jewish, like my husband, (I'm an Italian Catholic), but because he truly had a good time portraying the main man. The story holds historical, musical, and philosophical elements which can be incorporated into a college course, which he made very apparent in his appearance. He may not sing as well as his predecessors, but neither did a Russian peasant, he was truly natural. The attendees were mostly seniors who rocked the hall at the curtain. He was loved by all as an outstanding entertainer.

He's not Topol but Feirstein was good. His comic timing was excellent. Cast was very good. Their voices were excellent.

Overall performance was very good (entire cast). Some of the main characters were a bit flat on the notes. It could be better!

  • Born to Play Tevye

by Boosbabe on 2/11/10Golden Gate Theatre - San FranciscoRating: 5 out of 5

If you're looking to experience a joyous afternoon or evening, a trip to the Golden Gate Theatre to see Fiddler on the Roof will certainly do it. Harvey Fierstein was born to play Tevye and the rest of the cast was just phenomenal. I couldn't have spent a more enjoyable afternoon. You will walk away singing!

Harvey Fierstein can't sign and acted "silly" as the lead. I was surprised that this is his reprised role as Tevye. I hope it is his last. I feel terrible for the rest of the cast. Maybe go on a night when his understudy is performing.

  • Great sound track

Unlike other productions in town like Wicked - when you walked out - you will remember a number of the songs and be singing them in your head.

  • OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCE!

by Narcissa on 2/9/10Golden Gate Theatre - San FranciscoRating: 4 out of 5

I was not sure what to expect when Harvey Fierstein replaced Topol in the San Francisco performance. I was impressed, first of all that he has won as many acting and writing awards as he has. I had no idea. Secondly, his performance is fantastic ! He makes the character his own, and gives him fun nuances of character. As someone who grew up with "Fiddler on the Roof" from when I was a kid, you would think there couldn't be anything else to be done. But the live show was fun, had alot of energy, and personality, and such a sad ending.

  • Fiddler on the Roof is as wonderful as ever!

The acting was superb. The voices impeccable. And the dancing, oy! What a great performance! I was so happy I was able to be part of it!

Very enteraining afternoon! Loved Harvey and cast...he did a great job, voice is raw but good and lines were delivered with grace and perfection. Enoyed his comedic style and facial expressions. I look forward to seeing another one of his plays.

It was enjoyable! They should not allow candy or water in the theater during the show. It is very distracting the noise the wrappers make.

  • Fiddler was amazing

by curlyhead on 2/8/10Golden Gate Theatre - San FranciscoRating: 5 out of 5

We had seen Fiddler many years ago and we loved this cast. Harvey Firestein was more than fabulous. We also had great seats in loge of the Golden Gate Theatre in San Francisco. I highly recommend this play.

  • Fiddler made for a good afternoon in the City

by Friedi on 2/8/10Golden Gate Theatre - San FranciscoRating: 3 out of 5

Overall, the play was very enjoyable. I couldn't believe how quickly the time passed. The Bottle Dance was amazing as were the dancers during the scene at the Inn. The Dream Scene was excellent - very well portrayed. Tevya's finest moment was singing "Do You Love Me?" Harvey's Fierstein's acting was very good but his singing was disappointing. His voice could not carry the higher range and was not forceful enough to demonstrate anger or be able to yell when necessary.

  • Mostly enjoyable

by Chavurah on 2/8/10Golden Gate Theatre - San FranciscoRating: 4 out of 5

I couldn't imagine Harvey Fierstein singing but his voice works for Tevya. He was very good. But there were times we couldn't understand what he was saying. Mostly everyone else was very good too. The Rabbi, however, needs more acting lessons. I went with a group of ten and this was the consensus. We loved how the sets moved in and out seemingly effortlessly.

  • Feirstein upstages Fiddler Play

by cooi on 2/8/10Golden Gate Theatre - San FranciscoRating: 3 out of 5

    H. Feirstein's over acting and bellowing and "silliness" didn't leave much room for anyone else on the stage. Still the music and choreography were terrific and the staging and scenery great.

  • Example of theatre surprises

by AnnaKat on 2/8/10Golden Gate Theatre - San FranciscoRating: 5 out of 5

The wedding ceremony had an amazing moment. The bottle dancers use real bottles. One broke and the dancers went on with the dance - on their knees- through the glass! At the end of the show they should have brought those dancers out seperately and said "this is what it means when they say THE SHOW MUST GO ON!" That is why live theater will never be replaced-it is REAL. . . TO LIFE!

  • Fiddler on the roof So Great!

by svita1 on 2/8/10Golden Gate Theatre - San FranciscoRating: 5 out of 5

Fiddle on the roof was definately worth the high price and my 7 year old daughter would agree. Harvey is just fantastic and funny and the cast and dancing is totally top notch! a very long show, 3 hours but it doesn't feel like it. The musicians were so great and the music so right on and beautiful. Don't miss the backstage door to get autographs, Harvey gave one to my daughter and was totally gracious!
