FATHER JOHN MISTY IN CONCERT:

Father John Misty brings folk into the 21st century with each eclectic element he incorporates into his unique sound, and his charismatic showmanship makes his live shows a must-see. When he's strumming his way through ballads like ìThe Night Josh Tillman Came to Our Apartmentî his emotional vocals and heartbreaking lyrics make alt-country fans feel right at home. But heís just as comfortable strutting his stuff to noisy, spiteful rockers like ìThe Ideal Husbandî and turning out full-blown electronica on tracks like the transcendently beautiful ìTrue Affectionî. With his singular combination of Americana traditions with cutting-edge sounds, Father John Misty is a folk icon for a new generation, and fans won't want to miss the chance to see him conjure up his immersive sound in concert.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Before making his debut as Father John Misty in 2012, singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Joshua Tillman was busy recording late-night demos in the Seattle-area. After self-releasing two CD-R demos he attracted the attention of Fargo Records, and in 2006 the label released his debut album Minor Works. In 2008 Tillman was tapped by indie darlings Fleet Foxes, who needed a drummer for the recording of their self-titled debut. Though he gained widespread exposure and success with Fleet Foxes, Tillman left to pursue his creative reinvention as Father John Misty in 2012. After a warm reception from critics and fans for his debut album Fear Fun, he set out on his first solo headlining tour. His 2015 follow-up album I Love You, Honeybear was a breakthrough success, appearing on best-of lists from esteemed sources like Pitchfork, Roughtrade, and Stereogum. As he continues to breathe new life into indie folk with his wide-ranging influences and poetic gifts, Father John Mistyís electrifying performances have fans eagerly anticipating whatís next from the innovative troubadour.

Great performance in a meh space

by GB from NY on 9/25/22Radio City Music Hall - New York

Father John Misty was fabulous and the addition of the NY Pops Orchestra was AWESOME, an amazing performance. They deserves 5 stars While Radio City Music Hall is an iconic and beautiful space, except for a relatively center orchestra seats it is too large and the audience is too removed so the performers are quite small and hard to see. This is further compounded by the stage which is so large it swallows the performers, poor Suki Waterhouse and her band tried and the performance was strong it was lost on the stage. RCMH deserves 2 stars for these types of shows. Final gripe is the sound mix which for both acts, and especially Suki was way too bass heavy.

    Couldn’t make the show.

by Andrew on 9/23/22The Anthem - Washington

I couldn’t make the show cause of Covid and didn’t have any options to sell or receive a refund for the tickets. Very disappointed.

    Great singing, terrible sound mix

by Adam on 9/23/22The Anthem - Washington

Outstanding musicianship by FJM and his band. But the sound mix had the bass turned up way too loud, obscuring the vocals (which TBH are the best, most important part of FJM's music). I don't know why venues crank up the bass so much and make the vocals hard to hear.

    Amazing!

    by V on 9/23/22The Anthem - Washington

Father John Misty was amazing live! One of the best performances I have been to. The anthem was clean, spacious, very well organized and just fantastic. The best part was we ran into him at the wharf and was able to take a picture with him. Overall experience was a 10 out of 10. Look forward to going back to this venue!

    Exceptional Performance

by DD on 9/16/22The Met Philadelphia - Philadelphia

Father John Misty totally delivered at this concert. His songs were on the mark and he had great rapport with the audience. Loved his new retro sound/songs. Could have listened to him for hours!

    Good time.

by Franklin on 9/16/22The Met Philadelphia - Philadelphia

Father John Misty was great! Suki Waterhouse was not very good. I could not understand a word she said. The MET in Philadelphia is nice but the neighborhood is not.

    Painful.

    by G on 8/29/22Orpheum Theatre - Vancouver

Father John Misty started the show by commanding the audience to stand up, which certainly boosted the energy in the room! Of course, it also totally disregarded people who specifically bought seats in the balcony so they could stay seated. People like myself who live with a spinal injury, my partner who is recovering from surgery, and I'm sure many others were faced with the choice of standing up and listening in pain for two hours or staring at the backsides of strangers for two hours, neither of which are worth the price of admission. At no point during the show did Father John Misty tell the audience they could sit back down. On the topic of pain, the volume was painfully loud. Unpleasant and uncomfortable to be sure, but it also ruins the experience in the sense that you can't hear any nuance in any instrument when they're all cranked to 11, and none of Father John Misty's biting lyrics (the reason we love him) were at all intelligible. I'll always be a fan of the music, but this was without a doubt one of the worst concert experiences of my 20+ years attending shows.

    Let seated be seated.

by Ed C on 8/28/22Orpheum Theatre - Vancouver

So the music performance was excellent, the sound was great, the venue is gorgeous, only part that ruined it a bit was when the band came out and the first thing Josh did was suggest everyone stand up for the show. That works if you're in a venue where the ground is flat and you're looking UP at a stage, but in a theatre where the seats slope downward, congratulations, you've literally just ruined the view for 90% of the attending audience. Would not recommend doing that.

    Very Impressed!!!

by Steph on 8/23/22Fox Theater - Oakland - Oakland

I really enjoyed this show!! I know mostly his old music but he did a great blend of old and new. Plus the fact there was a woodwind/brass section made the whole thing feel like a jazz club.

    Amazing Show at the Fox

    by Jaxon87 on 8/23/22Fox Theater - Oakland - Oakland

I've been anticipating this show for quite some time, and made sure everything I could control was perfect. We lucked out with local street parking, got there a bit early to enjoy tacos across the street from the venue at Xolo's (highly recommended, one of my fave things about the Fox). Extremely easy to get into the venue, the merch table was very accessible, and the bar upstairs was very efficient getting us our cocktails. I prefer the balcony instead of SRO, plus the view is spectacular. Suki Waterhouse was the opener, and a nice surprise as her band was great. For the Headliner, Father John Misty played most of his most popular songs, with the top hits off of his latest album sprinkled in. Always a great entertainer, he had some good short stories also sporadically placed before songs. He has such a long discography, he will play completely different sets night to night; did I hear all of my favorites? No, but there were some great surprise deeper cuts in there. All in all, the Fox Staff is always great, Xolo's Tacos are spectacular, and FJM was off the charts!

    Great performance, terrible sound

    by A. C. on 8/23/22Fox Theater - Oakland - Oakland

Even FJM commented that they were “battling with mics” - mushy, lyrics unintelligible, and at times squelching sounds that could not have been intentional.

Great musician but sound system was too oud and a bit off

by AW on 8/23/22Fox Theater - Oakland - Oakland

I love Father John Misty. He was great. But the first two songs were extremely loud with too much reverb on the electric guitar. Over the course of the show, it improved. Overall FJM is a great performer with an amazing catalog.

    Underwhelmed

    by J. B. on 8/16/22Orpheum Theater - New Orleans

I was underwhelmed with the opener. Her sound was terrible. FJM had a great, full band, but he didn’t seem completely into the performance.

    Best concert ever!

by Olivia on 8/16/22Orpheum Theater - New Orleans

Father John Misty is a great performer & Suky Waterhouse was also a great opener! We flew in from Orlando for my husbands birthday and the concert fell exactly on his birthday so we had an amazing time. Thank you FJM!

So much $$ and experience in Live venues but.....

    by 50 Concerts p/Yr on 8/15/22Moody Amphitheater - Austin

Read all the reviews everyone else has posted... Pre Pandemic I went to 50 shows per yr, I know the game. Such a pretty area and it was poorly designed. Music and sound was NOT the focus here, different from W experience downtown. Crowded $100 seats are seated shoulder to shoulder. Prices were near pirateering prices. What were you thinking? Father John Misty is a crooner who likes to hear himself sing and MC, cool. All good but Rock me out?... He did not, I fell asleep twice during show. Save the money, turn on a CD or check him on Spotify and stay home for a mellow tune.

Entrance, sound and seating needs improvement

    by Austinite83 on 8/15/22Moody Amphitheater - Austin

Both artists delivered. However, sound was not very good and too loud. I wasn’t close to the stage but the sound was not balanced and my ears started hurting at some point. Maybe it was a little bit too much. Seating was nice until people in front rows stand up, at this point you are unable to see anything. Entrance checks and scan was smooth, but there wasn’t an area designated for ride sharing drops and pickups. This led to my driver drop me in the wrong entrance unnecessarily and confusing walk around the block.
