The original "Evita" was my favorite musical on Broadway, and I'm happy to say that this revival is wonderful as well.... However, I do need to qualify that! Not to be mean, but I've seen it twice now -- once with the principal lead actress (Elena Roger) as Evita and once with her understudy/alternate (Cristina DeCicco) in the role (during a Saturday matinee) -- and I have to say that the understudy was FAR BETTER than the star!!!! In fact, the entire show was FAR BETTER when she was in the role! There was much more chemistry between she and the male actors, she was much more expressive, her voice was more beautiful, etc. The only thing the lead actress (Roger) had over her was that she was an amazing dancer. But this role requires so much more than that! In order to care about Eva Peron, the actress must show the audience her true self. I just cannot stress enough that if you go see this show, you should go to a Saturday matinee or Wednesday evening production where Ms. Decicco is playing Eva!!!!!!!!!
