About

TIM RICE and ANDREW LLOYD WEBBER's Tony Award®-winning musical returns to Broadway at last, starring Grammy® Award winner RICKY MARTIN (Les Misérables) and Olivier Award winner ELENA ROGER (Piaf), who will be the first Argentinian actress to play the role of Evita on Broadway. She reprises her remarkable portrayal that dazzled audiences and critics in London's West End. Also starring is Tony Award winner MICHAEL CERVERIS (Sweeney Todd).

    EVITA was amazing!!!

From the start of the show to the end, everyone did an amazing job keeping you wanting more. Ricky Martin was amazingly great, he should win a Tony award this year.

    Not bad

by terry1980 on 4/10/12Marquis Theatre - New York

The show started off slow at first but got better after the first one or two songs. The leads were great - the understudy for Eva was brilliant! Ricky Martin was great to watch and Peron was great as well.

Will get better as the weeks go on

by TallTexan on 4/10/12Marquis Theatre - New York

We were at the Show Saturday night. Day 3 after it opened. The first half was a little harsh for me. Elena Roger's voice at times seemed to shrill and was just not pleasant. Perhaps she was just trying to push the emotion too hard, not sure what but I was ready for intermission. Michael Cerveris was a nice surprise. He played the part of Peron very well. Ricky Martin was also a nice addition. His voice is just so smooth and diction so clear that it was a welcome contrast to Elena. By the second half things seemed to meld better. Elena was not screaming her songs and it was much more enjoyable. I have to admit I really am not thrilled with the way it ended. A bit anti-climatic for my taste after such a dramatic and impactful opening number.

Big production. Talent? Not so much.

by opusrma on 4/10/12Marquis Theatre - New York

First you notice the set is big. Some songs, too many actually, run on into the next leaving no time for applause or appreciation. One has to wonder why. It soon becomes obvious. Ricky Martin, as Che, is going through the motions, no acting involved. He's a pop star performing as if in a live version of a music video. A music video is something this show should never be. Elena Roger, as Evita, acts well enough and has the chops to hit the high notes on this difficult musical role though there were a few places where the really high notes were tempered a bit. She is not a belt-er as required when Evita becomes a more forceful radio presence. In fact, she almost gets lost, fades vocally. It was Evita's forceful voice, her mastery of it that stirred up the emotions of the masses. That got lost here. Even her signature solo, "Don't Cry For Me Argentina," didn't sell much. This number, of all numbers, lacks her feigned emotion. For all that lacked in Elena's performance I blame the director. For the vocal purists, Elena's voice can be ingratiating. Not every note needs vibrato; certainly not the shorter notes. But there it is anyway. Elena's voice is better suited to the latter scenes once Evita becomes sickly. The two best things about the show are: one, Michael Cerveris as Juan, the lone, true, and outstanding talent in this production though he is directed to be a little too stiff for my taste; and two, the choreography is quite good and well conceived. There is much more dancing than than in traditional productions. This production is clearly staged for the masses. If you like big productions or revere celebrity you will love this show. You probably are already a fan of the Madonna film version, too. For the more discerning theater goer, not so much.

Evita herself was the bad part of show

by BwayinGotham on 4/10/12Marquis Theatre - New York

This was a decent production but each appearance by Ms Roger playing Evita had you shaking your head at her poor voice and hard to hear pronunciation. The actress kicked out of Peron's house when Evita meets him, was such a refreshing contrast in female voice (though she sounded straight out of a Disney movie), that when you hear Evita singing again she sounded somehow worse. There was no superb acting in Ms Roger's singing to compensate for her voice. Pretty Ricky did a good job with his role, not great, but good. If you are or were a fan of his might be worth seeing this on the days with the alternate Evita (not Ms Rogers).

    EVITA headed South!!!

by thehew on 4/10/12Marquis Theatre - New York

With great expectations, we were very excited to see this show. What a thrill to see Ricky Martin as an awesome Broadway performer as well as Michael Cerveris. All the rest of the cast were truly talented. However, the biggest disappointment was Elena Roger!! She is definitely an actress but NOT a singer..especially not suited for BROADWAY!! I wish I had seen the alternate because her credentials show a generous background in singing. Having to listen to any singer with Nasality issues is bad but add the pushing and screeching with it--and to think one would pay orchestra prices!!! New York Times Review was right on the nose about her!!!!! The only disappointing peformer I have ever seen on Broadway in the last 10 years.

While I enjoyed the overall production, Elena Rogers unfortunately did not have the voice to pull off this role. Ricky Martin and Michael Cerveris, however, were excellent. Wish the producers had chosen a better leading lady.

    EVITA

by SoniaandHarry on 4/9/12Marquis Theatre - New York

Despite mediocre reviews by the critics, I was determined to keep an opened mind. Patti Lupone's Evita was one of my favorite Broadway memories and a tough act to follow...even thirty years later. While this production was enjoyable it would have been better were I not comparing it to Hal Prince's production. The chemistry of LuPone, Mandy Patinkin and Bob Gunton is missing, there are too few sparks. Ricky Martin is the de facto star, even if unintended. The audience can barely contain themselves when he is on stage; he almost seems embarrassed by the adoration which only lends to his undeniable charm.

the musical is as good as ever, but...

by DIRECTOR517 on 4/9/12Marquis Theatre - New York

Ricky Martin was a little weak, and was not helped by a terrible costume and terrible hair and mustache. He had no humour. Elena Rogers was good, not great. Cerveris, brilliant. Act I amazing. Beautiful choreography. Act ii, more problematic. What's with Evita having no interaction at all wit hhe chorus during the money scene, and standing on a bunch of cheap trunks for the rainbow tour. Those scenes were bad. Ending, w/bed turning into casket, was beautiful. Overall, I loved it.

    Evita lead was subpar

by JHGF on 4/9/12Marquis Theatre - New York

OVERALL EVITA WAS AVERAGE, RICKY MARTIN AND MICHAEL CERVERIS WERE NOT BAD , THOUGH ELENA ROGERS WAS NOT AS GOOD AS EXPECTED CONSIDERING SHE HAD THE MAIN ROLE. THE BEST SINGER I THOUGHT FORGIVE ME I DO NOT KNOW HER NAME WAS THE FEMALE WHO PLAYED THE ROLE OF MICHAEL CERVERIS'S EX GIRLFRIEND. UNFORTUNELY SHE ONLY HAD ONE SONG. ON THE MUSICAL SCORE THERE WERE SOME GOOD SONG NUMBERS THAT I LIKED BUT SOME I COULD NOT WAIT UNTILL THEY WHERE OVER.

    disappointing

by madelinebrooklyn on 4/9/12Marquis Theatre - New York

The play had no wow factor. The lead singer who played Eva Peron had a sweet voice but didn't deliver. Had not been for Ricky Martin who could stand there and do nothing the play would have been a real disapointment.
