About

TIM RICE and ANDREW LLOYD WEBBER's Tony Award®-winning musical returns at last!
Eva Perón used her beauty and charisma to rise meteorically from the slums of Argentina to the presidential mansion as First Lady. Adored by her people as a champion for the poor, she became one of the most powerful women in the world — while her greed, outsized ambition and fragile health made her one of the most tragic. EVITA tells Eva's passionate and unforgettable true story, and features some of theater's most beautiful songs, including "Don't Cry for Me Argentina," "Another Suitcase in Another Hall" and "High Flying, Adored." Don't miss the stunning new production of EVITA, directed by MICHAEL GRANDAGE and choreographed by ROB ASHFORD, that Channel 4 New York calls "THE HOTTEST TICKET IN TOWN!"

    Evita Is Wonderful!

by Greenscreen on 9/22/13Oriental Theatre Chicago - Chicago

So good I 've seen in twice in the first week and will see it again. Beautifully sung by the leads and ensemble and played lushly by a nice sized orchestra. I highly recommend this show!

    Visually Stunning, Everything Else "Okay".

by chicagotheatregeek1 on 9/22/13Oriental Theatre Chicago - Chicago

The sets, designs, visuals, lighting and costumes were absolutely stunning. Every moment of the show looked as though it came straight from a film, and it was not difficult at all to suspend my disbelief into 1940's Argentina. Everything felt authentic and genuinely vintage. The choreography was hit or miss, however. Some numbers, like "Buenos Aires", captured the essence of the song well, and were enjoyable to watch, while other numbers seemed to miss the mark. The second act's pacing was long (however, this is Andrew Lloyd Weber...nothing is ever 'too' long). Evita is not my favorite show in the world, so perhaps I am biased. Ms. Bowman as Eva, while exponentially talented, seemed to struggle with the score (I can't blame her. That's a tough show to sing, so I have to give her credit for doing it 8 times per week. She MUST be exhausted!) Overall, I'm glad I saw it, but I do not think I would pay $102 to see it again.

Really, the Understudy on a Saturday night?

by Camdam on 9/22/13Oriental Theater - Chicago

What a disappointment for an eagerly awaited return of Evita to Chicago. Last night's performance was introduced by: "The role of Eva will be performed by Desi Oakley." An audible sigh of displeasure came from the audience. Really, on Saturday night the understudy is thrown to the wolves. Without meaning to be harsh, the understudy had both a voice and a physical appearance that totally diminished the good intentions of this revival. She struggled to reach notes, screamed when she should have been more quite, lacked Eva's seductive and calculating demeanor and was too tall and big to reflect the presence of "Evita" not just "Eva." There was nothing believable about her character and no one in the audience really believed her body was breaking down or losing strength at the end. Juan Peron was excellent, but Che, who vocally handled the part well, always seemed so concerned about pitch, and diction (no evidence of an accent) that he was ever the outsider in a way the script never intended. The ensemble was steady and strong with many highlights noted from that cast. But overall, the understudy was not ready to play a prime time Evita and Che was too egotistical and detached to form an approach-avoidance bond with Evita throughout the entire redacted show. Disappointing and I would not recommend to my fellow Chicago theater goers unless the memory of Madonna and Banderas coupled with the score is the goal of attendance.

    Evita Lite

by SFDe on 9/21/13Oriental Theatre Chicago - Chicago

A striped down version of Evita with sub-par voices, and cheap scenery. Hardly even a faint echo of the original. At 2 hours and 15 minutes total, the only element that was carefully protected was a full intermission to generate concessions sales. Don't go.

    Evita

by DaCatLady on 9/21/13Oriental Theatre Chicago - Chicago

Simply amazing. Every actor, every singer played their role as if they had studied it their whole lives. The story line was refreshingly honest - there was no sugarcoating who and what Evita was, how she had gotten to her position, and the public's view of her. The singing was incredible and there wasn't a dull moment. I would absolutely recommend it to anyone!
