She was one of THE most refreshing musicians I have seen in years. Unique and unforgettable!

Excellent show!!! I loved the intimate setting!!! Her voice was spectacular!!!

  • Not what I expected

    by Tilla1227 on 4/23/16Carolina Theatre - DurhamRating: 2 out of 5

I expected to hear a more jazzy side of this great talent or at least a variety. In addition, she never said one word to the audience.

  • Esperanza is on another level

    by Paranoya527 on 4/17/16Apollo Theater - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

This was my second time ever at the Apollo. First time watching Esperanza performing. I had listened to the album only a couple of times before the show...but nothing would've prepared me for this. She was so good she actually prompted me to write a review, something I've never done before. I was hoping she'd play more after her album set, but that's okay. It was more than I expected already. I can't wait to see her again.

  • Esperanza, what happened?

by vallejo on 4/17/16Apollo Theater - New YorkRating: 2 out of 5

I went to this show expecting the kind of performance i had seen during a Grammy performance. It felt like i went to the wrong show! It had no pizzaz, I couldn't figure out the "idea" of the show, and so it did nothing for me. I expected some cool, soft jazz!

  • more music please

by lightmaster on 4/17/16Apollo Theater - New YorkRating: 3 out of 5

I do not own any Spaulding records. I found what I heard online interesting. I heard so much about her I decided to try a show. She was interesting live also. Music was a mix of progressive and fusion jazz, at least in my view. There was a little performance art as she and her backing group (guitarist, drummer, three back up singers, one of the singers did a little keyboard playing) introduced songs with brief skits. The skits only worked sometimes. Ms. Spaulding danced and bopped around the stage. Her voice was stronger with more range than I expected. She was best when just jamming with her two musicians. She is known for playing double bass, but she only played electric bass. She played a little piano also. She did play well on both instruments. Most disappointing, the set only lasted about 1hr. 15 minutes. I would have liked more music.

  • Wish she interacted with the crowd

    by Ramodown52 on 4/17/16Apollo Theater - New YorkRating: 3 out of 5

She is an awesome artist honestly I kno she's promoting her new album which is fine her artistry is amazing but if she would have played "I know you know" it really would've made my night and pretty much sure it would have made the night for a lot of people! She definitely has presence on stage! The only thing missing was more love for the fans on the stage

  • Magical and insightful performance

by PeterMiller on 4/17/16Apollo Theater - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

A brave and unpredictable show, a breath of fresh air beyond conventional music performances. All her art and skills shine here, group members are brilliant musicians and performers.

  • Disappointing genre metamorphosis

by konee on 4/17/16Apollo Theater - New YorkRating: 1 out of 5

The first time I saw Esperanza perform I fell in love with her style, her music, her voice, talent. If this performance had been my first I would not be a fan and would have zero interest in her music.

  • Esperanza delivers rock infused music with charm

    by Yih109 on 4/17/16Apollo Theater - New YorkRating: 4 out of 5

Recommend seeing this live. Her voice is amazing. But most of all cool to see some of the rock throughout the album and love the new sounds. Still original Esperanza my favorite but like the new twist

  • I love her new ascension!

by Sehshata on 4/17/16Apollo Theater - New YorkRating: 5 out of 5

Although the experience was different than before she is still an amazing artist!

  • Disclosure Required Before Purchase of Ticket!!!

by matobone on 3/18/16Mezzanine - San FranciscoRating: 3 out of 5

A disclosure was required regarding what this "performance" was really about and yet there was none. As a result we were ambushed!!!! Albeit a very passionate and energetic performance, the sound quality was so garbled -—honestly only 1 or 2 words out of every lyric were understandable! This was no musical performance either, was a Shakespearean play or sorts I think. My favorite moment was realizing many or couples were equally as confused & leaving within the first 30 minutes. We endured for an hour, but not a second longer.

  • Mezzanine sound

    by Angelo12 on 3/16/16Mezzanine - San FranciscoRating: 4 out of 5

The music good. She is amazing and her band as well, BUT the sounds of the venue was terrible. It was so bad that I left before the show ends. I gave 4 stars for Esperanza Spalding. She diserve 5 but the mezzanine deserve none. Bad ,bad sound.

  • Terrible

    by a377 on 3/16/16Mezzanine - San FranciscoRating: 1 out of 5

Purchased tickets for a birthday gift for my boyfirend who is a jazz fan. Not only did she start an hour late, the music was nothing like her original Jazz days. It was a storyline that we didn't understand, lots of loud electric bass, a weird puppet show and no interaction with the audience at all. The venue was standing only and got very crowded and hot, so the delay made that even more uncomfortable. We stayed for the entire 1 hour, 1 song encore show, again another disappointment. When we left we were confused at what we just saw. She didn't even bother to hit some of her older stuff that everyone feel in love with in the first place. Will not be purchasing tickets for her show again.

  • Not my cup of tea.

by Anonymous on 3/16/16Mezzanine - San FranciscoRating: 2 out of 5

Aside from her showing up a hour late without a opening act I was not impressed with the sound quality or her dancing around like a fairy. Don't get me wrong she is gorgeous and talented, but I think she needs to go back to her older hits. I'm not loving her new music. After two drinks we left and had some yummy Italian food and sparkling wine.

  • Esperanza

by Delage on 3/16/16Mezzanine - San FranciscoRating: 2 out of 5

I came to see and hear the artist. What I got was a theatrical show that I could not understand nor hear. The accoustic were bad and the artist were entertaining themselves. It would have been alright if we were at a studio theater at the university with admission of $3.00.

  • A BIG DISAPPOINTMENT

by MsShoney on 8/31/15Terminal West - AtlantaRating: 1 out of 5

I am a huge Esperanza fan, and I was highly disappointed in this show. Most artists with such an impressive catalog of music as she would perform their music/songs that made people fall in love with them, but she didn't. Don't get me wrong, her vocals and musicianship were impeccable, but the songs from her new album are horrible!! The theme of the show was very confusing, it did not flow, and she seemed to be a bit spaced out. She did not engage the crowd AT ALL. She was talking, but I'm not sure who she was talking to (the voices in her head, maybe). This is the first time I've ever walked out on a concert. I read mixed reviews, and I should have saved my money. Don't make the same mistake I made... SAVE YOUR MONEY!

  • D+ Revolution Concert Deserves An F!

by bwcarp on 7/9/15Cain Park - Cleveland HeightsRating: 1 out of 5

Spaldings concert was a huge disappointment! We, as many others in the audience left before intermission (I had never done that before). We came expecting this talented artist's jazz bass and vocals and received loud rock music, mostly her playing electric guitars, unintelligible lyrics, and interpretive dance. In fact, I never saw her bass on stage. Don't go to this concert if you are expecting the jazzy Esperanza Spalding: it will be a waste of your time and money.
