    Awesome Show!

by AngelaT on 8/8/09Celeste Center - Columbus

This was a great show! Howard Hewett came way down in the audience and connected with the people. Eric bought energy and sang all the hits.

Great Performances Both Old & New!

by porterentps on 8/8/09Celeste Center - Columbus

Howard Hewett warmed up the crowd with a few of his 70's hits from the old Shalamar days. He was off the stage and singing up close and personal with the ladies for most of the show. Although there were no band or background singers (all recorded) he managed to keep the performance flowing without being boring. He returned to the stage to sing his signature song "Say Amen" to the delight of his enthusiastic audience. Eric Benet, complete with three piece band demanded the ladies attention from the moment he stepped onstage. With his excellent vocals, smooth style and handsome looks he had every woman in the Celeste Center swooning to his every command. When he broke out with the song "Spanish Fly" the whole house intensified as a wave of emotion swept the venue. People got up out of their seats and started to dance in rhythm to the sensuous Latin beat. And then, the love fest began. By the middle of the show he had everyone singing (or wanting to sing) “I Want to Be Loved" and raising their hands in the air and waving like they didn’t care! He finished the show with a nice tribute to Michael Jackson by singing his rendition of "Billie Jean". Overall I thoroughly enjoyed the outstanding performances by these two outstanding (audience friendly) singers both old & new

    Eric Benet was incredible!!

    by Discogirl01 on 8/8/09Celeste Center - Columbus

Eric Benet was incredible. It is rare to hear a singer in this day and age that actually has talent. Eric played with the audience and was extremely charming on stage. I would go see him again in concert in a heartbeat!

by goldielocs on 8/8/09Celeste Center - Columbus

Howard Hewett opened the show. Then went off stage and did his whole performance off stage it was so cool. People took pictures. He danced with women, one being my friend. Eric Benet turned out. Sang old school and new songs. I would have paid more for those tickets. It was very nice.

    Ledisi was great!

by Antigone on 8/3/09Fox Theater - Oakland - Oakland

I really enjoyed Ledisi. This was my first time hearing her and I really enjoyed her performance. The sound for Mint Condition was not that great, but otherwise they were good. Eric Benet was also very good. I recommend the seating behind the sound stage be changed. We really had a hard time seeing the stage. Either that or reduce the ticket price.

    Eric Benet too little time!

by missjeri on 7/31/09Fox Theater - Oakland - Oakland

The concert was fine overall because I enjoyed all of the Artists. However, Eric Benet being the headliner should have had more time! It seemed to me that the opening act (Ledisi) was on stage too long for an opening act. I don't remember how many songs she sang but I was annoyed that it was so many. Mint Condition was great, but by the time Mr. Benet took the stage it was just over too soon! He didn't have enough time to really do his thing. The crowd was literally yelling out songs that we came to hear to no avail. I was very disappointed. I think a lot of us were.

    MIXED FEELINGS

by MSJJ on 7/29/09Fox Theater - Oakland - Oakland

LEDISI WAS FULL OF ENERGY AS USUAL. WAS NOT IMPRESSED WITH THE MINT. BUT THEIR PERFORMANCE GOOD IF YOU LIKE THEM. ERIC WAS WHO I WENT TO SEE! GOOD, BUT SHORT PERFORMANCE AND WHAT HAPPEN WITH THE BACKUP. AND I DON'T MEAN KARAOKE STYLE!

    hot and cold

by kingofconcerts on 7/29/09Fox Theater - Oakland - Oakland

as an up and coming star ledisi is very energetic and her voice is amazing her new single sounded nice. mint condition was full of pep and really danced around the stage a lot. the lead singer can still hit all his notes. eric benet would have been better with background dancers and background singers and a more earthy background stage. plus he lacked a full band and he sang with background mp3. he is talented but as a headliner you must put out more of a grammy award winning type of show the fox theater has nice sound when it isnt over cranked up. there is no need to make ears bleed.

    Mint Condition

by notimportant on 7/29/09Fox Theater - Oakland - Oakland

The show was absolutely horrible!!!! I am a concert critic and my experience with the Eric Benet show was such that I left before it was even over. The acoutics were so bad that it was impossible to here the performers sing anything over the music. Second, what happened to the other members of the group Mint Condition. Did only one guy show up? Ledisi may have been good but it was hard to tell over the loud music. Eric Benet was just plain boring. That's my opinion.

I think Mint Condition was the best...Ledisi was okay and Eric benet was good but he was the shortest out of the three and he was the headliner...

Mint Condition brought the house down!

by CrimsonRvn on 7/28/09Fox Theater - Oakland - Oakland

Everyone was great. I love Ledisi. But, this was my first time seeing Mint Condition perform. They rocked it out! I highly recommend you see this BAND perform.

    Wooooooooo!!!

by JazziJK on 7/28/09Fox Theater - Oakland - Oakland

The concert was awesome! These are three of my favorite performers and they did NOT disappoint. Ledisi was on fiyah, Mint Condition was off the chain and Eric Benet soothed and grooved. Even though I was in the balcony, I could still see the stage fairly well. My only issue was that the sound was a bit echo-y and muffled but that was only when they were talking, not singing. That may be the result of being in the balcony versus a lower level. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed myself as did the people around me. I would highly recommend going to see any of these truly gifted and talented artists whenever the chance presents itself.

    Great Concert with 1 concern...

by crcm on 7/28/09Fox Theater - Oakland - Oakland

Ledisi and Mint Condition rocked it! Eric Benet's vocals were on point and his sexiness was above par (as always); however his performance was not. He did a mock-up version of a live performance!! No back-up singers and no horn section. If you plan to have a chorus, pay singers to assist you. If you plan to play a song with a horn solo, hire a musician to play the part. Borderline tacky. C'mon Eric!! I've seen you before. You can do better than that. Your fans want a live performance - not semi-live!!!

Mint Condition & Lesidi was the BOMB!!!

    by MSLT11 on 7/28/09Fox Theater - Oakland - Oakland

The evening was great. The crowd was great. All performers were good but Mint Condition & Ledisi stole the show from the headliner, Eric Benet. Mint Condition had impeccable showman ship there band is AWESOME!! Ledisi is not giving enough credit for her talent. She is an artist that needs more exposure. She can hang with some of the so called Diva's in the music industry. I love her. Eric Benet was good but not great, his performance was lacking. He didn't have a real band and was singing along with tracks. This was a not good for him to come after a BAND- "Mint Condition". We enjoyed ourselves and would rate the performers as follows: Ledisi =5, Mint Condition=5, Eric Benet=3.5

    Ledisi turns it out

by Dasani on 7/28/09Fox Theater - Oakland - Oakland

Mint Condition, Eric Benet, Ledesi - concert review Ledisi, Mint Condition, Eric Benet @ the Fox Theater, Oakland, CA. …July 26, 2009 …Let us begin by acknowledging that Eric Benet and Mint Condition are two of my all-time favorite artists. That was the impetus for Wifey and I making the traffic filled Sunday drive to Oakland to see this show at the newly renovated Fox Theater. The place was originally a first-run movie house from 1928 until 1962. After that – the Fox went through a “special function” phase and then it sat dormant. Reopened in February of 2009 – the Fox is a brilliant beacon in the emerging Uptown Entertainment District of Oaktown. …Wifey & I paid nearly $200 (after fees and taxes) for our two seats which were 14 rows from the stage – right in the center. I was relatively hip to Ledisi through ownership of one of her CD’s and downloads of a couple tracks she has done for various projects. But I had never seen her live until last night. Friends who have seen Ledisi perform have long hyped her and now I understand what the uproar was about. This woman could not have been more impressive. She absolutely stole the show (…and that is saying something when Mint Condition follows you.) Ledisi’s voice is an instrument. She has range, power, and a spirit that is damn near hyper-kinetic. The recordings of her that I have heard to date just do not reveal the dynamo that she is. Gyrating, smiling, making eye contact, and touching the audience with her scatting skills – Ledesi WILLED the early show goers into the biggest frenzy of the night. Individual crowd members were still trying to get their buzz on as Ledisi ‘woke it up’. Those of you who read my reviews know that I can be a harsh critic. And seeing Ledisi reminds why I am so tough. It’s because when you hear the excellence of a natural singer with heart, energy, and soul that maintains precise pitch between multiple octaves – it sets the bar awfully high. All who cannot do that suddenly seem pedestrian. Not being that familiar with her catalog – I can not identify song names. She played for roughly 30-45 minutes and her show included a couple of tunes she identified as coming from her forthcoming CD (mid-August). One for sure was called Goin’ Thru Changes (available now on i-tunes). Mint Condition followed Ledisi – with Stokley commenting to the audience about “being a witness” to her performance. He used the term “witness” – in the same way basketball scouts talk about Lebron James. She was THAT dope. Troubled by a horrendous mix and guitar problems to start their set – Mint worked hard to recapture the house – running through hits as well as album cuts. They reached the large (4,000?) crowd best on two tunes; Nothing Left to Say (from E-Life), and of course during their encore – a chopped and screwed “Breaking My Heart (Pretty Brown Eyes)”. Eric Benet’s set was disappointing. He appeared with just a drummer (on a click track), a bassist, and a keyboard player. Background vocals were tracked as well as all horns and percussion. As a headliner of the show – I expected so much more. (Ledisi – the opening act had the biggest band of the night – with two backing female singers, bass, guitar, two keyboards, two horns, and a drummer.) Benet is a great vocalist. We have seen him in concert several times (8?). Unfortunately – Benet connected least of all (among the three acts) with the audience. In my opinion – this was due to the lack of production and personnel in his show. He opened with When You Think of Me – but without the signature Roy Ayers solo – or anything close to it from any band member – it went over like ho-hum. …Although the ultra talented Damonte Posey was on keys for Benet – I never felt like the show was much more than Eric signing to tracks. I hated that. Given Benet’s jazzy soul sound on his biggest, most popular tunes, - we found it particularly disturbing that he did not have a horn section or percussionist. I understand budgetary constraints. A bigger band is more expensive to travel. But at some point you have to think of the big picture. If your show doesn’t move a FAN like me – then maybe you would be better off not appearing until you can do it right (with a full compliment of players). Benet scored his biggest ovation when he jazzed his way through an audience participation cover of the late Michael Jackson’s Billie Jean. Overall – we had a great time. We hit a favorite pizza spot on the drive into the Bay area, and once there – parking was easy and within one block of the venue. The Fox Theater is top notch and recommended to all – although the acoustics are not great. Maybe they can add some foam in strategic places to absorb some of that sound and make it even better. Final thought: we came away with the conclusion that whenever Ledesi is playing again in our area, we are there!

    Good concert but...

by Thawk on 7/27/09Fox Theater - Oakland - Oakland

The concert was good but in that venue the speakers were blocking the performers from the side. Also, the acoustics in that bldg are good enough to where the base and overall volume need not be so loud. For most of the concert I could not understand the singers. In addition, the hanicap section should have more space away from the rail. The front seats were too close.

    great lineup

    by souldiva27 on 7/27/09Fox Theater - Oakland - Oakland

First off, it was a great show. Ledisi, Stokely, and Eric gave it to us!! However... It seemed that all acts received 40 minutes for their show (i didn't time it so i could be wrong), which is not enough of Mint Condition or Eric Benet with all the hits they have that people want to hear, plus the new stuff we haven't heard that they have to play to promote their lastest projects. Eric did not have a full band...what was that about? Drums, keys, bass, and TRACKS. I've seen him many times over the years, but never that scaled down. I still loved him...even though he was all up in Captain Stubbing's closet! The sound in the Fox was great! It's a gorgeous theater! Love that there are bars inside and outside! Final thought...although I would love to attend another concert at the Fox, I can't go for more than 2 acts on the bill. I'm going to stick to Yoshi's to see Eric and Mint...they will be there soon anyway!!
