About

Elvis Costello is a writer and part-time musician who made a number of records in the 20th Century, some of which are still remembered today.

He was born in London and raised there and in Liverpool.

Costello is the composer or lyricist of over six hundred published titles, including fifteen songs co-written with Paul McCartney and renowned collaborations with Allen Toussaint, the Brodsky Quartet and T Bone Burnett.

Costello's songwriting alliance with Burt Bacharach, began in 1995 with the song, "God Give Me Strength", which led to the 1998 album, "Painted From Memory", before their work was collected in 2023, on the four-album set, "The Songs Of Bacharach & Costello".

Elvis Costello songs have been recorded by Roy Orbison, Johnny Cash, Chet Baker, Dusty Springfield, Solomon Burke, George Jones, Linda Ronstadt and Bjork, while among the artists with whom he has written songs are Loretta Lynn, Carole King, Rosanne Cash and Kris Kristofferson and his wife, Diana Krall.

Working purely as a lyricist, Costello has provided words for the music of Billy Strayhorn, Oscar Peterson and for twelve Charles Mingus compositions and as a composer, set twelve unpublished lyrics by Bob Dylan.

2024 will see the opening of "A Face In The Crowd", Sarah Ruhl's stage adaptation of the Budd Schulberg story for which Elvis Costello composed the songs.

"A Face In The Crowd" will open at the Young Vic in London on INSERT DATE, directed by Kwame Kwei-Armah and produced by Adam Kenwright.

Elvis Costello is the author of "Unfaithful Music & Disappearing Ink", a more than six-hundred page memoir which has been translated into six languages. He has received a range of awards over his 45 year old career of which the induction into the Songwriters Hall Of Fame is probably the most significant.

Although he holds two honorary doctorates in music - one from the University of Liverpool and another from the New England Conservatory- Elvis Costello is known for playing the guitar with almost no regard for common sense.

Costello currently performs with The Imposters; his long time companions, drummer, Pete Thomas and pianist, Steve Nieve, bassist of twenty-three years standing, Davey Faragher and their special guest, Texas guitarist, Charlie Sexton.

  • Huge Elvis fan / who was checking sound

    by C. B. on 8/5/19Pechanga Resort and Casino - TemeculaRating: 4 out of 5

Elvis was amazing connecting to the audience. Allison sounded great. I have seen him more times than i can count. The sound from the musician's was overpowering. Could not hesr the bass or his voice on certsin songs. My whole section (orchestra row 8) noticed. Agsin it wasn't to cover him. Hid voice was there. Still a great show. Not sure if something happened between doong check but sound engineers should be working during show. Blondie's sound was perfect. Great show. Actually surprised me. Saw her in 80. She sounds the same.

  • Too Loud and Couldn't Understand

by Disappointed Fan on 8/5/19Pechanga Resort and Casino - TemeculaRating: 3 out of 5

First if all, this was in a newer venue at Pechanga. It's a bigger room with chairs and not at all as nice as their older, smaller venue. Blondie was great. Still rocking at 74. Elvis was crazy loud and absolutely impossible to understand. About half of the audience on the floor walked out after the first couple of songs. After reading other reviews of him for this tour, it seems like that is happening everywhere. Really disappointed. Not worth the money and effort of going.

  • Blondie Excellent - Elvis Rocked Setlist -but Sound Terrible

    by DS21_Driver on 8/4/19Rating: 3 out of 5

Blondie, hands down better show / performer, though I have been much more of an Elvis fan my whole life. She sang great, the band was incredible tight, the sound was clear and crisp. There was a 10 second moment in the middle of something like the 5th song where the sound almost completely cut out and we saw the board technician frantically plug something back into the rear of the soundboard. Elvis, amazing set list, all the smash hits. His voice though was not strong, hesitant, and occasionally not in time with the music (yes, that is his style but this was off-off"). The sound though was miserable, beyond poorly mixed rubbish. Way too loud, at the bleeding edge of distortion, with differing levels during differing sounds on differing instruments. Sometimes the bass was too loud, sometimes the keyboards, etc. Some songs were so poorly blended and so loud as to be almost unrecognizable. People, and I mean perhaps 10 - 15 actually got up and left at various points because the sound was so bad. I was hoping it was going to improve after a song or two, but it didn't. An A list performer with an A list set list and a D minus sound quality.

  • Elvis Costello is an enjoyable artist to watch

by CMK10 on 8/4/19Pearl Concert Theater at Palms Casino Resort - Las VegasRating: 4 out of 5

Elvis Costello is a fantastic guitar player and talented musician and performer. My favorite number was "Everyday I Write The Book", where he improvised and elongated the song with other riffs and it was extremely inviting and inspiring. It was a very enjoyable concert. He still sounds great and his guitar playing was simply superb to watch and hear. I enjoy all of his thought-provoking lyrics and his sense of humor. I appreciate all the musical endings or added guitar riffs that he adds to his songs which makes the songs even more enjoyable. The Palms could improve their theatre acoustics a little.

  • Bands good, sound mix NOT!

by Guitarman on 8/4/19Pearl Concert Theater at Palms Casino Resort - Las VegasRating: 3 out of 5

Blondie was better than expected - a very enjoyable show - good sound mix. Elvis Costello might have been good if the sound wasn't so bad. This was my 165th major concert and that was one of the worst sound mixes I've heard. There was distortion on each instrument as well as vocals. Very disappointing.

  • The Blondie show was great and the sound was fine. Elvis Co

by Elvis Costello fan on 8/4/19Pearl Concert Theater at Palms Casino Resort - Las VegasRating: 2 out of 5

Elvis Costello needs to be aware of the audience experience of his show. That was too loud.

  • Could Be Better...

by S. on 8/4/19Pearl Concert Theater at Palms Casino Resort - Las VegasRating: 3 out of 5

Blondie & Elvis Costello double bill, what's not to like ?... 1) Access to the venue was ridiculously slow, with only two doors open to load 2,500 people into the auditorium. The line to gain access was too long and snaked it's way through the entire casino, yet once inside there were no lines for concessions, the bottle neck was entirely due to staff operating just 2 entry doors. Surely Palms Casino you can manage a venue better than this ? 2) Blondie were excellent, she sounded great and the band were tight, hit after hit and a few new songs ! 3) The FOH audio engineer that mixed Elvis Costello must have been wearing boxing gloves and industrial earmuffs, running the console at 11 for the entire time we stayed. The volume was just uncomfortably loud, with every fader at the top of it's track. Sadly it was difficult to distinguish lead vocals from the overall noise of an over-amplified band. I was sitting 4 seats to the right of the audio desk so it couldn't be we were hearing 2 different levels. About halfway through the Elvis set we decided to leave because the audio mix was so bad and distorted.

  • Elvis and Blondie

by New Celine Fan on 8/4/19Pearl Concert Theater at Palms Casino Resort - Las VegasRating: 4 out of 5

There were some other guests that were very loud and obnoxious. They seemed drunk. They were so loud that the 4 people in front of them complained and we moved somewhere else. I should have complained as well. They were ao annoying. The sound at the Pearl at the Palms was just ok. Having seen Janet Jackson the night before at the Park MGM theater; the Pearl did not measure up. I liked the size of rhe venue. Felt more intimate. The artists were wonderful but at one point during the Blondie show the sound on her mike went completely silent. They fixed it quickly but I have never seen that happen at any concert I have ever attended. And I think I'm an avid attendee. From what I understand this is Blondie's crew responsiblity. But just an FYI. Overall ok experience. But I will have to think twice about attending a concert at the Pearl. A lot of these things were not the Pearl's fault. But left a bad impression. However the acoustics at the Pearl did not measure up to the Park MGM theater.

  • Elvis more than saves this concert

by CO to NV on 8/4/19Pearl Concert Theater at Palms Casino Resort - Las VegasRating: 4 out of 5

Debbie Harry gave a stilted, canned performance. No audience charisma, nor did she seem to really care about it. Chris Stein sat and looked at his guitar. Blondie's new lead guitarist was a wonder! I'm surprised he doesn't have a band of his own! Clem Burke was adequate. Very disappointing performance! HOWEVER, Elvis Costello and the Imposters showed the audience the true meaning of showmanship, musical expertise, group cohesion and audience connection. Their goal was to give the audience a stellar experience and thereby to envelope us into their happiness and passion. SUCCESS! The audience was spellbound by rare gems like Elvis's collaborations with Burt Bacarach (sp.?) and Carole King. From the moment this group took the stage until the final note, including the story telling and comraderie, the audience was part of an OUTSTANDING performance. I did not want it to end...

  • Great Show, but seats not so much!

by Roddy on 8/4/19Pearl Concert Theater at Palms Casino Resort - Las VegasRating: 4 out of 5

Great Show, but seats not so much! Floor seats, but everyone standing made it difficult for those of us not able to do much standing.

  • Elvis & Blondie

by DJW on 8/3/19BB&T Pavilion - CamdenRating: 5 out of 5

It was a very enjoyable show. Both groups were terrific. This was my first time going to the BB&T Pavilion and I thought it was a fine facility. The sound quality and volume was fine and the video screens were clear to watch also. Compared to the PNC Bank Art Center in Holmdel, NJ, it is much newer and I thought the facility overall was superior - but it doesn't have free parking. I'd also heard that leaving the concert in a car can be a bit of a nightmare so we decided to take mass transit from the Pennsauken Transit Center using the NJT's light rail River Line. That worked out great, except that the train going to the concert was way overcrowded. We wound up leaving the show a few minutes early because we wanted to make sure we'd be able to get back onto a train to Pennsauken where we had parked our car. It would be great in the future if the concert promoters could work with NJT to provide additional trains to and from the facility immediately before and after the shows - I would definitely take advantage of that again!

Awesome concert. Great venue. Amazingly talented musicians. Loved it.

  • What a bill

    by Brian O on 8/1/19BB&T Pavilion - CamdenRating: 5 out of 5

Blondie & Elvis Costello - how can you go wrong? Both nads did a full set & encore - both of them blow me away!! Both of them had old and new material - classics, not so classics mixed together!! Both of them have such huge repertoire's that everyone is going to miss something - we just need to live with that!!

  • Bucket List Event

by lazyfan on 8/1/19BB&T Pavilion - CamdenRating: 5 out of 5

Overall the show was pretty incredible. I was in the cheap seats (on the lawn) but still had decent visibility. As it got later the bugs started to e a problem, which I had not expected. The multiple large video screens were much appreciated so I could more easily focus on the on stage action. The bands sounded great. Elvis consistently does an incredible show. This was my first time seeing Blondie, something I have always wanted to do. They sounded great as well, although Debbie changed up the way she sang some of the favorites, not sure what that was about. Totally enjoyed her cover of Old Town Road!

  • Blondie was good, Costello was Gr8.

by C.O.P (crime of passion) on 7/31/19BB&T Pavilion - CamdenRating: 4 out of 5

Big Blondie fan, but they’ve lost a bit their spark. (Sorry guys) Elvis bumps my review by one star. His set list, band & performance was consistently both satisfying & engaging. He has 2 Gr8, female backing singers that added polish (vocals) & visual appeal (dance).

  • A great event!

    by N. D. on 7/30/19BB&T Pavilion - CamdenRating: 4 out of 5

A perfect night, a great venue, and two acts that performed their hearts out for their fans.

  • Fantastic

The whole experience was positive. From the parking, finding my seat to the performers themselves. I had a great time

  • Sound issues

by Jack on 7/30/19BB&T Pavilion - CamdenRating: 3 out of 5

The sound for Elvis Costello was outright horrible. There is NO excuse for this. I've been to the BB&T center before and the sound was fine...it was fine for Blondie but for the headliner is was amateur night on the soundboard.

  • Disappointing

    by Sharon P. on 7/30/19BB&T Pavilion - CamdenRating: 2 out of 5

As a longtime Elvis fan, I’ve been to virtually all of his concerts in the Philadelphia area in the last 40 or so years. But I can only recall one other EC concert, in Atlantic City a few years ago, that left me feeling as disappointed as I did on Saturday night. I lost my enthusiasm after just the first few songs - the sound was absolutely terrible (we were sitting 4th row center) and, when combined with all the reworked songs, I just couldn’t connect to the music. I usually leave an Elvis Costello concert wanting more but, on Saturday night, I just wanted to get out of there.

  • Perfect weather and great music.

by Billy on 7/30/19BB&T Pavilion - CamdenRating: 5 out of 5

I was in the lawn section or should I say dirt section. The experience would have been better if there was some grass. I don’t understand why in this day and age you don’t try and put some sod or even have artificial surface like in pro football.
