About

Elvis Costello is a writer and part-time musician who made a number of records in the 20th Century, some of which are still remembered today.

He was born in London and raised there and in Liverpool.

Costello is the composer or lyricist of over six hundred published titles, including fifteen songs co-written with Paul McCartney and renowned collaborations with Allen Toussaint, the Brodsky Quartet and T Bone Burnett.

Costello's songwriting alliance with Burt Bacharach, began in 1995 with the song, "God Give Me Strength", which led to the 1998 album, "Painted From Memory", before their work was collected in 2023, on the four-album set, "The Songs Of Bacharach & Costello".

Elvis Costello songs have been recorded by Roy Orbison, Johnny Cash, Chet Baker, Dusty Springfield, Solomon Burke, George Jones, Linda Ronstadt and Bjork, while among the artists with whom he has written songs are Loretta Lynn, Carole King, Rosanne Cash and Kris Kristofferson and his wife, Diana Krall.

Working purely as a lyricist, Costello has provided words for the music of Billy Strayhorn, Oscar Peterson and for twelve Charles Mingus compositions and as a composer, set twelve unpublished lyrics by Bob Dylan.

2024 will see the opening of "A Face In The Crowd", Sarah Ruhl's stage adaptation of the Budd Schulberg story for which Elvis Costello composed the songs.

"A Face In The Crowd" will open at the Young Vic in London on INSERT DATE, directed by Kwame Kwei-Armah and produced by Adam Kenwright.

Elvis Costello is the author of "Unfaithful Music & Disappearing Ink", a more than six-hundred page memoir which has been translated into six languages. He has received a range of awards over his 45 year old career of which the induction into the Songwriters Hall Of Fame is probably the most significant.

Although he holds two honorary doctorates in music - one from the University of Liverpool and another from the New England Conservatory- Elvis Costello is known for playing the guitar with almost no regard for common sense.

Costello currently performs with The Imposters; his long time companions, drummer, Pete Thomas and pianist, Steve Nieve, bassist of twenty-three years standing, Davey Faragher and their special guest, Texas guitarist, Charlie Sexton.

  • Elivs and Blondie

by Handpicked on 8/8/19Greek Theatre - Los AngelesRating: 3 out of 5

They are incredible artists, the show was amazing and delivered, the reason for the 3 stars is the sound design was terrible in both shows, couldn't really hear either Elvis or Deborah's voices...was super disappointed by the sound. Going to one more show at the end of the month, if the sound is the same Greek is off the list as concert venues. No excuse today for bad sound

A magnificent event. Worth every penny. The staff of The Greek Theatre was helpful and courteous. The crowd was happy enthusiastic. And a wonderful time was had by all!

Great band and backup. Voice gone no intonation left.

  • Elvis Costello & Blondie

by Sampson on 8/8/19Greek Theatre - Los AngelesRating: 4 out of 5

The sound mix was AWFUL. Muddy and ruined half the songs of both Blondie and Elvis. I heard everyone complaining - and not just in my section - and I have no idea why a venue like the Greek would have such a crappy sound mix in 2019. What happened? Seriously - I'm not a snob. It was just terrible. That said - as far as the artists go: Elvis was AMAZING. Blondie was FANTASTIC. The backup singers? SMOKING HOT with GORGEOUS voices!

  • Disappointed

Seats were great venue is good parking is easy ( except finding your car) needs more signage. However Whether it was the sound or the artist something was definitely off 😐 love him graphics amazing. Off beat not balanced funky sound

Elvis may have had a good voice at one time, but not anymore....he should stick to one genre. I was very disappointed. Music was good.

  • Great Concert

by ELO Fan on 8/7/19FivePoint Amphitheatre - IrvineRating: 5 out of 5

This was a really fun night. Both Elvis and Blondie sounded and looked great. Fivepoint is a great venue, looking forward to more concerts there later this year.

  • Elvis is Back

by Bill Mac on 8/7/19FivePoint Amphitheatre - IrvineRating: 4 out of 5

I went to the concert for Elvis but, in the past I had heard that he didn't like to play any of his old songs. I was hoping that since he was touring with Blondie, he may have changed his outlook on those tunes... and he did!! He played a lot of stuff from My Aim is True, This Year's Model, and Armed Forces. Great to hear all those classics.

  • Mixed Bag

    by Oski77 on 8/7/19FivePoint Amphitheatre - IrvineRating: 4 out of 5

Was really looking forward to seeing Costello in a full set and willing to put up with Blondie. Flip the script, Blondie was on fire, rocking the entire time they were on stage. Elvis was distracted and unfocused.

  • Twenty Years Too Late

    by Jeff B on 8/7/19FivePoint Amphitheatre - IrvineRating: 4 out of 5

Before I review the show a bit, let me say that Elvis Costello is positively one of the most talented songwriters of his generation. His songs are emotional, poignant, biting, insightful, often anthemic, commentaries with clever hooks, songs you can sing along and relate to... Though I have seen 300 concerts easily, I never had a chance to see him live when he was the "angry young man" I loved so much. At this advanced stage, he doesn't have the raw energy he once did...not his fault of course, but it is what it is... Opening with Pump It Up and Clubland, it was clear that he wasn't the vibrant iconoclast that said "To Hell!" to Saturday Night Live, but it was still reassuring to see him perform nonetheless. He told some interesting stories, which I enjoyed very much, did a short stint at the piano, and performed a few of his older hits like Less Than Zero and a graphics-enhanced Watching the Detectives. He finished with a long version of When I Write the Book and Allison. Backing him up was the three-piece band, the Impostors, and two very competent (and fun to watch) backup singers. When he returned for an encore, we were greeted with his two biggest songs, Radio Radio, and the amazing What's So Funny (About Peace, Love, and Understanding). This last song, to me, is one of the greatest songs by anyone, period. I get all choked up whenever I hear it. Blondie was the opening act. There were some semi-rabid Blondie fans at the show and gave the 74-year-old Debbie Harry a rousing reception as she played about 45 minutes of her greatest hits. Not my particular favorite, but at her age, she did rather well and I have to give her and her rocking band credit. All in all, I lamented to myself that I got there twenty years after the Man's prime; wasn't his fault at all, yet we were still treated to some nicer moments.

  • Ok, here goes

by Sleepless on 8/7/19FivePoint Amphitheatre - IrvineRating: 4 out of 5

Elvis Costello was great, but he didn't play the songs I was hoping to hear. Blondie was awesome once Debra Harry got going.

  • Great Concert!!!

    by D. on 8/7/19FivePoint Amphitheatre - IrvineRating: 5 out of 5

The Elvis Costello/Blondie concert was great!!!! They both played their hits and the Five Points Amphitheater is a nice venue for concerts. There are really no bad seats.

  • So disappointing

by purplefrog on 8/7/19FivePoint Amphitheatre - IrvineRating: 1 out of 5

We were hoping for a solid show, but instead we got weak vocals from Elvis, lots of self indulgent chit-chat, and a set list that should have included more hits. Thank God for Blondie! She was amazing!!

  • AMAZING!

by Bree on 8/7/19FivePoint Amphitheatre - IrvineRating: 5 out of 5

elvis costello and blondie never cease to amaze. timeless music.

  • Mixed bag.

    by Oldstone 57 on 8/7/19FivePoint Amphitheatre - IrvineRating: 3 out of 5

Five points is a great venue with a ton of workers, all very helpful. Blondie was surprisingly good. Her voice sounded pretty good for age 74. Elvis on the other hand had timing issues with his band and at times just did not sound good. His pipes are still decent so I would have prefered more of his softer side songs. Lastly, staff graciously came to us in our cheap back corner seats and gave us upgraded orchestra seats off to one side that was fairly empty. That was really nice of them. However that put us too close to one set of speakers and the sound quality would have been far better further back and more in the center.
