About

Elvis Costello is a writer and part-time musician who made a number of records in the 20th Century, some of which are still remembered today.

He was born in London and raised there and in Liverpool.

Costello is the composer or lyricist of over six hundred published titles, including fifteen songs co-written with Paul McCartney and renowned collaborations with Allen Toussaint, the Brodsky Quartet and T Bone Burnett.

Costello's songwriting alliance with Burt Bacharach, began in 1995 with the song, "God Give Me Strength", which led to the 1998 album, "Painted From Memory", before their work was collected in 2023, on the four-album set, "The Songs Of Bacharach & Costello".

Elvis Costello songs have been recorded by Roy Orbison, Johnny Cash, Chet Baker, Dusty Springfield, Solomon Burke, George Jones, Linda Ronstadt and Bjork, while among the artists with whom he has written songs are Loretta Lynn, Carole King, Rosanne Cash and Kris Kristofferson and his wife, Diana Krall.

Working purely as a lyricist, Costello has provided words for the music of Billy Strayhorn, Oscar Peterson and for twelve Charles Mingus compositions and as a composer, set twelve unpublished lyrics by Bob Dylan.

2024 will see the opening of "A Face In The Crowd", Sarah Ruhl's stage adaptation of the Budd Schulberg story for which Elvis Costello composed the songs.

"A Face In The Crowd" will open at the Young Vic in London on INSERT DATE, directed by Kwame Kwei-Armah and produced by Adam Kenwright.

Elvis Costello is the author of "Unfaithful Music & Disappearing Ink", a more than six-hundred page memoir which has been translated into six languages. He has received a range of awards over his 45 year old career of which the induction into the Songwriters Hall Of Fame is probably the most significant.

Although he holds two honorary doctorates in music - one from the University of Liverpool and another from the New England Conservatory- Elvis Costello is known for playing the guitar with almost no regard for common sense.

Costello currently performs with The Imposters; his long time companions, drummer, Pete Thomas and pianist, Steve Nieve, bassist of twenty-three years standing, Davey Faragher and their special guest, Texas guitarist, Charlie Sexton.

  • Old and tired

Elvis sounded old and tired to me. He got better as he warmed up

  • Very good overall

    by P. F. on 8/11/19Concord Pavilion - ConcordRating: 4 out of 5

Easy venue to get in and out of. Blondie was very good especially the lead guitarist. The bad Debbie Harry can’t sing the higher note parts of songs, and she wasn’t close. The non hits songs didn’t seem to draw much reaction from the crowd. Chris Stein sits on a chair and was barely playing. Stein obviously has some health issue. He did two solos that were so basic a new guitarist could replicate it in their first week. Sad to see. The Blondie hits still rock Elvis Costello first he can really rock on guitar. I wasn’t expecting him to jam so well , and he didn’t have another guitarist covering him like Blondie. I knew all of the Costello songs, but the lyrics were often hard to clearly understand. Blondie wasn’t hard to understand. They did a poor job with the noise levels for Costello. I sat right next to the mix engineer so I was hearing it in the same location. Costello and the band were very good. I thought he would be stiff. Overall, Id give Costello a B+ mainly because the singing was hard to decipher. Blondie a B- because the non hit songs weren’t that good, voice issues, and understandably the sexiness is gone.

Two wonderful shows. The staff at the venue were kind, friendly and helpful. A magical night full of great music.

Elvis was great. Wonderful performer. He had good stories and was funny.

  • Amazing Night

    by L. V. on 8/10/19FivePoint Amphitheatre - IrvineRating: 5 out of 5

Oh what a night! First time at FivePoint and loved it. Great seats, amazing entertainment. I've waited forever to see Elvis and so thankful I finally did. Blondie was as great as she was back in the day too. Can't wait for FivePoint to be a permanent amphitheater with a permanent feel. Great parking, check-in process was quick and painless, friendly people, and a party environment with food trucks and games before the show.

  • Fantastic Blondie gigs!!!!!

by Matteo Barattieri on 8/9/19FivePoint Amphitheatre - IrvineRating: 5 out of 5

I am a huge Blondie fan from Italy. I got to the USA to follow Blondie on tour. 4 gigs: Temecula, Irvine, LA and Santa Barbara. The concerts were fantastic! The band did it so well. Debbie Harry in shape. I shared my tour with several Blondie fans, some of them I had never met before (someone were just fbook friends of mine). They were all so glad to have been to the gigs. But all the people at the venues did agree: Blondie rule the Planet. Thank you, Blondie. Thank you, Blondie fans!

  • Something was just off

by Dudestein on 8/9/19Greek Theatre - Los AngelesRating: 3 out of 5

I've seen Elvis live many times over the years since 1978 at Winterland in San Francisco. Right off the bat Elvis and the Imposters open with Pump it Up, which was the song he had traditionally closed the show with. This was a good sign, but it was apparent that the arrangement was different than other live performances. I assumed this was because as a show closer, he used to take the opportunity to give each band member a bow. Next comes Clubland and again an updated arrangement. It had been some years since I saw them perform live so I put it down to the normal evolution of a performer. Also, Elvis has done this before. More than once he changed arrangements, most notably inserting segues to older classic tunes as a nod for their inspiration. But in this case, the list of classics that are loved by his fans sounded off. Part was I suppose when you've performed songs over 40 years you lose some passion. They sounded perfunctory. Beyond Belief particularly suffered. Curiously, the song that came off best was 'Monkey to Man' which was not an Attractions number. It was my first time to this venue so perhaps that is a contributing factor.

  • Enjoyable Show

by Liz Kenny on 8/8/19FivePoint Amphitheatre - IrvineRating: 4 out of 5

Some of his music sounded great, others he changed the melody to suit his voice and those songs were unrecognizable

  • Too much bass!

by Debness on 8/8/19Greek Theatre - Los AngelesRating: 4 out of 5

Blondie was fabulous! She was in great voice & inspired me! Her band & set was tight! Invited the audience to sing along with her. I found Elvis’s set to be badly mixed. The bass was aggressive!!! Good thing I brought along earplugs. I also felt that Elvis’s use of projections distracted for the set. It was too flashy & hard to watch.

  • All About Debbie

by Squid11 on 8/8/19Pearl Concert Theater at Palms Casino Resort - Las VegasRating: 5 out of 5

For starters, I'm not an Elvis Costello fan, and I didn't stay to see him. The bill should have been flipped, frankly, but I got home at a decent hours, so no complaints. If you're looking for a review of his performance, look elsewhere. But if you want to hear about Blondie, I'm your guy. I'm a fan since Parallel Lines, which is my all time favorite album. Hugely impactful in my life. But even back then, Debbie Harry had what appeared to be a love/hate relationship with performing. Watching her perform "one way or another" on American Bandstand was cringe-inducing. She lost track of lyrics throughout the song and had to turn her back on the cameras several times. So when the band launched into that famous riff to open the show, I was afraid. And true to form, Debbie missed some lyrics. But it was a great performance and the band kept right up. When that song was done, Debbie proclaimed "Phew - got that out of the way - now we can have some fun!" I knew we were in good hands from then on. Hard to believe this woman is 74 years old. She looks and moves like she's at least 15 years younger. The performance was filled with surprising moments, such as transitioning "The Tide Is High" into "Groove Is In the Heart" (Dee-Lite) and "Heart of Glass" into "I Feel Love" (Donna Summer). It worked. And she and the guys always brought it right back before it got out of hand. She also sang a verse and chorus of "Old Town Road," the current Billboard #1 song and now the all-time top song based on weeks at #1. But better than the surprises were the poignant moments at the end of the show - a stellar performance of "From Russia With Love" while the accidental mock russian presidential seal appeared in triplicate on the background screen, or the show closing "Dreaming," where Debbie repeated the words "dream" and "free" over and over, putting herself and us into a subtle form of socio-political trance. A lesser artist would try to hit us over the head with it, and would fail to make the point. The band, which includes original members Clem Burke and Chris Stein, was razor sharp, btw. Oh - and I didn't even need earplugs! What a treat! The older generation gets it right again.

  • Free Upgraded Seats

by RockingRobin on 8/8/19FivePoint Amphitheatre - IrvineRating: 5 out of 5

Elvis Costello and Blondie were fabulous and the quality of sound was excellent for both artists. I purchased $20 tickets that live nation promoted for the summer concerts of 2019. To my surprise we received upgraded seats.Thank you live nation and five point amphitheater. ✌🏼

  • Fantastic

    by h. j. on 8/8/19Greek Theatre - Los AngelesRating: 5 out of 5

Elvis played all his deep cuts, what can you say?? This cat writes some of the wittiest songs and his backing band was very tight. I have been a big fan for the last 40 years, and see him every time he comes to town

  • Elvis Costello and Blondie

by Cocoa Puff on 8/8/19Greek Theatre - Los AngelesRating: 5 out of 5

The Greek Theatre is pretty fabulous, my first time there. Blondie was super-fabulous, as you might expect. Then Elvis Costello and The Imposters rocked the place. My fave was Elvis and the band's rendition of Watching the Detectives. Magic.

  • Elvis KILLING IT as usual

by Dan on 8/8/19Greek Theatre - Los AngelesRating: 5 out of 5

He's added some female backup singers that sound great. They played Everyday I Write the Book. Incredible show. Greek best venue in LA besides my brass waterbed.

  • 5 Stars for Elvis, 1 star for Blondie

    by G-man on 8/8/19Greek Theatre - Los AngelesRating: 4 out of 5

Why would he tour with Blondie?! Her voice was flat, her energy was low, and she played too long. Elvis was great, his band was tight and spot on! He is a great front man: amusing, energized and the setlist was an A+

  • Fun time, but....

    by D. on 8/8/19Greek Theatre - Los AngelesRating: 4 out of 5

As always, the Greek is a great venue. Blondie was great, especially once she got warmed up. Elvis was good, but the sound mix wasn’t. It was very hard to hear him sing....mostly heard the instruments. I also wish he would play more old stuff...that’s what we all came to hear!!

  • Good show!

    by B.K. on 8/8/19Greek Theatre - Los AngelesRating: 4 out of 5

Elvis Costello was great! He gets better every time I see him. Blondie was also good. No songs from the 1st album 🙁. New guitarist would be at home in Alice Cooper’s band. Great to see the original band members still together, Debra Harry was great!

  • 2 Amazing Concerts For the Price of One

by Philip M on 8/8/19Greek Theatre - Los AngelesRating: 5 out of 5

Blondie started about 7:20 p.m. and played a good 100 minutes. Elvis Costello was creeping up on that number when we finally left at 11 p.m. Wonderful graphics for both sets, with special kudos to the ones for Blondie. We've seen Blondie before and Deborah Harry was in rare form for this performance. A real treat. First time seeing Costello and surprised by how jovial and funny he was. Because he seemed to have some trouble singing in tempo while playing lead guitar, my suggestion is that he add a lead guitarist to his band so he can concentrate on singing his wonderful, complex lyrics. A really good night.

  • Great concert! I loved both bands!

by Brave Doe on 8/8/19Greek Theatre - Los AngelesRating: 5 out of 5

I love the Greek theatre it is such a pleasure to see the best bands in the world there!

  • Awesome

by Brent on 8/8/19Greek Theatre - Los AngelesRating: 5 out of 5

I had to go to this by myself because my friend could not find his ticket, but I had a blast! I always try to see Blondie when they are in LA and they were amazing as usual! They played some songs I hadn't heard them play in a while. It was my first time seeing Elvis Costello and that was also an amazing show. I love the Greek theater!
