About

Elvis Costello is a writer and part-time musician who made a number of records in the 20th Century, some of which are still remembered today.

He was born in London and raised there and in Liverpool.

Costello is the composer or lyricist of over six hundred published titles, including fifteen songs co-written with Paul McCartney and renowned collaborations with Allen Toussaint, the Brodsky Quartet and T Bone Burnett.

Costello's songwriting alliance with Burt Bacharach, began in 1995 with the song, "God Give Me Strength", which led to the 1998 album, "Painted From Memory", before their work was collected in 2023, on the four-album set, "The Songs Of Bacharach & Costello".

Elvis Costello songs have been recorded by Roy Orbison, Johnny Cash, Chet Baker, Dusty Springfield, Solomon Burke, George Jones, Linda Ronstadt and Bjork, while among the artists with whom he has written songs are Loretta Lynn, Carole King, Rosanne Cash and Kris Kristofferson and his wife, Diana Krall.

Working purely as a lyricist, Costello has provided words for the music of Billy Strayhorn, Oscar Peterson and for twelve Charles Mingus compositions and as a composer, set twelve unpublished lyrics by Bob Dylan.

2024 will see the opening of "A Face In The Crowd", Sarah Ruhl's stage adaptation of the Budd Schulberg story for which Elvis Costello composed the songs.

"A Face In The Crowd" will open at the Young Vic in London on INSERT DATE, directed by Kwame Kwei-Armah and produced by Adam Kenwright.

Elvis Costello is the author of "Unfaithful Music & Disappearing Ink", a more than six-hundred page memoir which has been translated into six languages. He has received a range of awards over his 45 year old career of which the induction into the Songwriters Hall Of Fame is probably the most significant.

Although he holds two honorary doctorates in music - one from the University of Liverpool and another from the New England Conservatory- Elvis Costello is known for playing the guitar with almost no regard for common sense.

Costello currently performs with The Imposters; his long time companions, drummer, Pete Thomas and pianist, Steve Nieve, bassist of twenty-three years standing, Davey Faragher and their special guest, Texas guitarist, Charlie Sexton.

  • Performance was Great, Sound-Mix was Terrible

by Mel Q on 1/21/24House of Blues Houston - HoustonRating: 3 out of 5

The performance was awesome; they played a beautiful mix of songs. We've seen shows at HoB several times over the years and the sound is usually great- loud and pulsating. We started out near the back of the venue and it was difficult to hear - there were people talking loudly around us and the sound wasn't loud enough to drown them out. We ended up moving closer up, which was better, but sound was still too low for a rock show.

by Man out of Time on 1/20/24House of Blues Houston - HoustonRating: 5 out of 5

Fan since "My Aim is True."Finally got to see him "live"at House of Blues-Houston and was not disappointed. The band was tight, Elvis was exceptional as was Charlie Sexton. Perfect mix of classics and newer material. It took me 46 years to get to a concert. Now, I can die happy...And I won't get any older, now that the angels wanna wear my red shoes.

  • Costello, the blues version

by Prazy on 1/20/24House of Blues Houston - HoustonRating: 4 out of 5

Elvis recreates himself. I saw him perform a mostly jazz concert in New York, a mostly punk show in Houston Woodlands and this 2024 tour is the bluesy Elvis. He covers Muddy Waters and Mose Allison. He does bluesy arrangements of his own classics. There was punk, surf, new wave, psychedelic and carnival organ grinder mixed in too. He did a Latin arrangement but no Spanish Little Triggers” ☹️ Charlie Sexton is a classy upgrade to the band. There were moments when it got too loud for me and he didn’t play my favorite songs but with so many decades of music, that can’t be helped. Maybe I heard some new favorites. Elvis still sounds great but pretty raspy in parts. His stories were fun and new. Overall, great show that will be remembered fondly. 4/5.

  • Over Sold

by Snit on 1/20/24House of Blues Houston - HoustonRating: 3 out of 5

Great music but GA was oversold and as a 5’6” person I mostly was looking at people’s backs and taking body blows

  • Great artist; terrible venue.

by Phil on 1/20/24House of Blues Houston - HoustonRating: 3 out of 5

The setup of House of Blues Houston is terrible.. it's mostly standing room, but with a large section of the middle off the floor set aside for premium tables. I would up behind that, where the sound quality was awful and the bar noise distracting. Elvis is great, though. Wish he'd played a different venue.

  • Elvis delivers the goods.

by mss on 1/15/24The Fillmore Miami Beach at Jackie Gleason Theater - Miami BeachRating: 5 out of 5

Elvis and the Imposters were awesome. Even though I've seen him live a handful of times going back to the eighties, he still delivers a great show, from fan favorites to deep cuts. The band was tight. They sounded great with Charlie Sexton on lead guitar, and the way Elvis changed some of the arrangements on some hits was enjoyable. "Watching the Detectives,"in a deeper dub arrangement, and "Clubland,"played as if in a Havana nightclub, were two outstanding examples. Thanks Declan for making a stop in Miami!

  • Elvis still has it. Go to see him while you can

by Micky D. Excellent concert in Miami. EC showed that he still has it and mixed up the show with a decent number of his hit songs and a smattering of His take on Bluesy songs. on 1/15/24Rating: 5 out of 5

Great concert with lots of good stories behind the songs. EC remains the master of the genre.

  • THE BEST !!

by MPRATS on 1/15/24The Fillmore Miami Beach at Jackie Gleason Theater - Miami BeachRating: 5 out of 5

Elvis and his band put on an amazing 2 1/2 hour show. I'd seen him several times before but this was truly his best performance. He brought along guitarist Charlie Sexton as part of his group. Personally he should be a permanent addition. The interplay between Elvis and Charlie was fantastic. They played many more obscure songs than normal. Which was fine. In fact the first hour or so, I was familiar with just a couple of them. But I loved it! They played with such conviction and the songs were great. Elvis was very talkative, quite funny and amiable. More so than normal. The last 90 minutes of the show is where more fan favourites were played,"Watching the Detectives", "(I dont wantto go to) Chelsea","Red Shoes","Pump it Up"and "Allison"among others. He played several songs seated and acoustic which was a nice touch. Moments when you think the show was over, theyd pick up their instruments and play some more! And the audience was right there with them. Sadly they played nothing from the album "When I Was Cruel"which is one of, if not his best album but I cant complain since this was a stellar show. They closed the evening with a blistering extended version of "I Want You". Elvis started the song seated with acoustic guitar but a couple minutes in switched to electric and it was stunning. the song must've gone on for 15 minutes. I was in awe.The mans voice has not changed one iota. He can still belt it out. Please, please go see him on this tour, you will not regret it!

  • Pump It Up

by PsiloMush on 10/25/23Rating: 5 out of 5

Outdoors with Elvis, Nick and Charlie in Bend, OR on a beautiful evening - amazing! Sound was great and the whole vibe was energetic and fun. Some different renditions of classics, new stuff, and just a wonderful night.

  • “Well, at least Elvis enjoyed himself”

by Steve on 8/30/23Rating: 2 out of 5

I’ve listened to Elvis for 30+ years- love his music and his message - he clearly still has skills and talent but for this show he clearly performed for his own satisfaction and that of perhaps his most diehard, diehard fans. He played precious few of his best known songs and when he did so he rifted so far away from the original lyrics and sound as to make them practically unrecognizable. I am grateful for the joy his music has given over the years but will not see him again in person.

  • Nick was great

by Keith on 8/25/23Rating: 2 out of 5

It was our first concert at the Hartford Healthcare Amphitheater in Bridgeport. The show had Nick Lowe as the opening act for Elvis Costello and the Imposters. I always wanted to see Nick Lowe in concert. I had seen Elvis on his first tour to the U.S. back in the 70's and I thought it would be fun to see if he would play the older tunes from his early records. Nick was terrific and did a great job opening up for Elvis. We were not too impressed with Elvis and his show. He added a horn section and played different arrangements for the few hits I wanted to hear. The best part of his show was when he brought Nick Lowe bask on stage to play the last two tunes which they played straight and with energy that was missing earlier. Not too impressed with the venue. The acoustics are horrible. Most of the people around us were spending more time talking and drinking instead of listening to the music. It is a former baseball field and unless you want to play for floor seats up close, you are 300 feet from the stage. Oh, and there is a train station next door with train brakes screeching and horns blaring from time to time.

  • I’m here for artists doing there thing.

by Will on 8/21/23Rating: 5 out of 5

47yo M. This is a review of a show from July 5 in Bridgeport, CT. This was my first Elvis Costello show, i loved it. he played a fantastic selection from across his storied career. several of the classics were new arrangements, i’m here for it, and i get it if you want to switch it up after 40+yrs. The horn section and backing vocals leveled this show up. He said it was the premier of a new set for the rest of the tour, loved that, i hope they didn’t change much.

  • Excellent Elvis

by Lydia on 7/21/23Rating: 5 out of 5

Show was awesome, Elvis had us up and dancing in our seats, he is such a good performer. Would go to his concert again and at this venue.

  • Not a jukebox, Not a request show!!

    by Brian O on 7/20/23Rating: 5 out of 5

Elvis Costello has been around a few years... and has a fair few hits!! People were calling out certain songs - and he reminded them "This is not a request show - and I am not a jukebox"- and then proceeded to play what he wanted!! And we loved it! A great show - he didn't play all the songs I wanted to hear, but enough to keep me happy!!

  • High Energy Show! A+

by DD on 7/19/23Rating: 5 out of 5

Incredible show! Nick Lowe opened for him and brought back some powerhouse favorites Elvis played for nearly 3 1/2 hours in between ballads monologue, and several encores brought the house down. First time seeing him and so glad I did.

  • Wrong venue for this

    by Steve R on 7/19/23Rating: 3 out of 5

I love the fact that Elvis constantly mixes things up and reinvents himself. And I really loved how the horn section made the arrangements of his hits jazzy. But it was a delicate mix and this venue has a sound that is heavy on a good day. And this wasn't a good day, sound wise. Not sure if it was just the amphitheater or if EC's sound people didn't do a good job. But the mix was muddy. I think this particular show would've done better in the Oakdale.

  • Elvis was weak

    by Johnny C on 7/19/23Rating: 2 out of 5

Elvis Costello was really a disappointment. He did not engage the crowd and voice was way off. He played only a few of his hits. Nick Lowe, who opened for him, was better

  • Save your time & money

by Denny on 7/18/23Rating: 2 out of 5

This was not the Elvis concert we’d thought it would be. Didn’t sound or feel right - not sure what we were seeing. Hardly any hit songs and those that they played were slowed down. Only fun part was the end when he played 3 popular songs.
