About

Elvis Costello is a writer and part-time musician who made a number of records in the 20th Century, some of which are still remembered today.

He was born in London and raised there and in Liverpool.

Costello is the composer or lyricist of over six hundred published titles, including fifteen songs co-written with Paul McCartney and renowned collaborations with Allen Toussaint, the Brodsky Quartet and T Bone Burnett.

Costello's songwriting alliance with Burt Bacharach, began in 1995 with the song, "God Give Me Strength", which led to the 1998 album, "Painted From Memory", before their work was collected in 2023, on the four-album set, "The Songs Of Bacharach & Costello".

Elvis Costello songs have been recorded by Roy Orbison, Johnny Cash, Chet Baker, Dusty Springfield, Solomon Burke, George Jones, Linda Ronstadt and Bjork, while among the artists with whom he has written songs are Loretta Lynn, Carole King, Rosanne Cash and Kris Kristofferson and his wife, Diana Krall.

Working purely as a lyricist, Costello has provided words for the music of Billy Strayhorn, Oscar Peterson and for twelve Charles Mingus compositions and as a composer, set twelve unpublished lyrics by Bob Dylan.

2024 will see the opening of "A Face In The Crowd", Sarah Ruhl's stage adaptation of the Budd Schulberg story for which Elvis Costello composed the songs.

"A Face In The Crowd" will open at the Young Vic in London on INSERT DATE, directed by Kwame Kwei-Armah and produced by Adam Kenwright.

Elvis Costello is the author of "Unfaithful Music & Disappearing Ink", a more than six-hundred page memoir which has been translated into six languages. He has received a range of awards over his 45 year old career of which the induction into the Songwriters Hall Of Fame is probably the most significant.

Although he holds two honorary doctorates in music - one from the University of Liverpool and another from the New England Conservatory- Elvis Costello is known for playing the guitar with almost no regard for common sense.

Costello currently performs with The Imposters; his long time companions, drummer, Pete Thomas and pianist, Steve Nieve, bassist of twenty-three years standing, Davey Faragher and their special guest, Texas guitarist, Charlie Sexton.

  • Career Embracing Show

by Oswald Cobblepot on 7/18/23Rating: 5 out of 5

Elvis trotted out a strong lineup of songs that reflected his eclectic recording career. For me, there were some things I certainly liked more than others, but even some stuff I'd never warmed to before sounded impressive and good. It was apparently too much for some however, because people were leaving at regular intervals beginning before halfway through. Too bad. The set was well paced and livened up considerably when Elvis started wailing on guitar and playing off the Imposters, guest horn section, and guest guitarist Charlie Sexton. It was a long and excellent concert.

We saw this show at The Met Philadelphia A beautiful venue with great sound. The organization of getting people in and out could use a bit of improvement but overall was pretty good

  • Great Show

Overall Elvis put on a great show. Did all his hits/

  • Pretentious self-serving noise

by James on 7/17/23Rating: 1 out of 5

This was a very disappointing performance by Elvis Costello. He failed to realize there was an audience there that wanted to hear "Elvis Costello". The sound itself was of poor quality. The bass was too high and the other instruments seemed out of sync. The horn section felt out of place during the entire show. How many Elvis Costello songs have horns on them any how ? The selection of songs had a lot to be desired. A greatest hits live is not necessary but a few more recognizable songs would have made for a better experience. The better known songs he did perform were almost unrecognizable due to a change of tempo , arrangement or phrasing. He had no respect for the audience totally ignoring their desire to appreciate his catalogue of great music. This was a truly self indulgent performance of cacophony. Nick Lowe and Los Strait jackets were awesome. Elvis Costello was a complete let-down. Nick Lowe left you wanting to hear more where Elvis Costello left you feeling like you had way too much.

  • Played what he wanted

    by Steve F on 7/17/23Rating: 2 out of 5

Saw Elvis a few years back, he nailed it with many of his classics. This time, not so much. He played and sung his choice songs, not the crowds. When someone yelled out “Pump it Up” early in the show, he told the audience, “this isn’t a request show”. He did Alison and Watching The Detectives, with a slow tempo, but at least we all knew them. The rest must have been his favorites, because they sure weren’t the fans. His voice still sounded great, and he had a great 3 man horn section, but we were disappointed with the song choices. With the amount of great songs he has, there is no reason to play 15+ that no one ever heard of.

  • great show

I had a great time., Love the MET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Disappointed

    by Robert G on 7/17/23Rating: 1 out of 5

The venue was great.... Sorry to say we left early with the rest of the crowd. We made it to almost the 3/4 mark when I just couldn't take it anymore. Didn't know the tunes he played and all were so slow that it felt like I was trapped in the Armada room at the Holiday Inn. The show lacked any energy whatsoever, bummed. On the bright side it was a day out of work.

  • My appreciation grows

by MJ on 7/17/23Rating: 5 out of 5

This show was the final show of the tour and it was exception. Elvis was on for 2 hours 45 minutes. With a catalogue as deep as his, you can't please everyone, but very diverse selection of songs from across his career. early rock, recent rock, the crooner records, he covered them all. Elvis is a remarkable talent. Thanks for a great evening.

  • So talented!

  • 5 Stars for Nick Lowe

by JayX on 7/17/23Rating: 1 out of 5

I could've watched Nick Lowe and Los Straightjackets play all night. Instead they were rushed off stage for Elvis Costello to play an almost three-hour set of self-aggrandizing show tunes. He was awful. Barely played any of the hits and almost all of those he did were rearranged into boring nonsense. What a disappointment.

  • Not quite what I expected

    by 2BadQuads on 7/17/23Rating: 4 out of 5

Not in a bad way either. Elvis played for 2.5 hours and covered various points of his 45+ years career. I have lost track of his career over the years but was glad to catch back up. Band was really good and he was in quite a good mood as he was cracking jokes throughout the evening.

  • EC is King

by RNDaddy on 7/17/23Rating: 5 out of 5

  • A weak performance

by Ber on 7/17/23Rating: 3 out of 5

Love this band always have, felt not connected age has taken its toll. I’m only two years younger than him dissatisfied with this performance, hoping travel lag being the last stop on this tour. Love n Respect Hewey

by Philly Met show on 7/17/23Rating: 3 out of 5

Not the set list I was hoping for, and he seemed grumpy and pissed off

  • Jazz funk elvis

by voodootrucker on 7/17/23Rating: 3 out of 5

Wasn't a fan of the jazz funk version of songs. Left early. Nick Lowe and Los straight jackets was incredible

  • So So Show

by rose rocks on 7/17/23Rating: 3 out of 5

It was a good, not great show. Los Straightjackets hardly played solo which I was REA:LLY looking forward to,. Nick Lowe played marginal songs, nothing to get me excited about as a longtime fan. So, I thought Elvis was a little inebriated and somewhat rude to audience., I enjoyed his Jazz/blues -foray , but he couldn't even give his fans a nibble of a hit.....What about doing "What's so Funny bout Peace, Love, and Understanding?". He could have begun show, singing it with Nick Lowe. Luckily, I scored a single seat and was in Orchestra 7, so I didn't pay an arm and leg for the seat.
