About

ELF The Musical is the hilarious tale of Buddy, a young orphan child who mistakenly crawls into Santa’s bag of gifts and is transported back to the North Pole. Unaware that he is actually human, Buddy’s enormous size and poor toy-making abilities cause him to face the truth. With Santa’s permission, Buddy embarks on a journey to New York City to find his birth father, discover his true identity, and help New York remember the true meaning of Christmas. This modern day Christmas classic is sure to make everyone embrace their inner ELF.

The New York Times says that ELF is “SPLASHY, PEPPY, SUGAR-SPRINKLED HOLIDAY ENTERTAINMENT!” USA Today calls ELF, “ENDEARINGLY GOOFY!” Variety proclaims, “ELF is happy enough for families, savvy enough for city kids and plenty smart for adults!”

Based on the beloved 2003 New Line Cinema hit, ELF features songs by Tony Award nominees Matthew Sklar and Chad Beguelin (The Wedding Singer), with a book by Tony Award winners Thomas Meehan (Annie, The Producers, Hairspray) and Bob Martin (The Drowsy Chaperone).

Very disappointing! Not worth the money

by Parent on 1/2/23Shea's Performing Arts Center - Buffalo

Not a family friendly show. Focused to much on Santa not being real. Not good for the older kids that still believe. Also, several sexual innuendo’s. Fine for adults and very little kids, but not for the older kids. Nothing like the Elf movie. This was a present from Santa to my kids and after the show, they looked so sad and had so many questions on Santa not being real. The worst gift they could’ve got. The buddy the elf actor did a good job, but again definitely wish we didn’t go!

    Fun with talented actors

by D on 1/2/23Shea's Performing Arts Center - Buffalo

My son and I really enjoyed the show. It was funny and the actors were top notch. However, I wasn’t expecting the speaking parts to literally be identical to the Will Ferrell movie version.

    Meh

by Dr Alan Grant on 1/2/23Shea's Performing Arts Center - Buffalo

The theater and staff, as always, were wonderful. The show was slow at times and more sad then funny. Parts with large ensembles were solid, but those were few and far between. As a movie that was geared towards the children, they felt like an afterthought in this production.

    Fun show

by Doodlebug315 on 1/2/23Shea's Performing Arts Center - Buffalo

We saw Elf the Musical at Shea's Theater in Buffalo, NY. First let me say this theater is stunning! The only possible issue for some is that there are no elevators for the upper floors. The show was upbeat and fun. The opening scene with the "elves" was adorable. The dancers and choreographer came together with a brilliant way to make us believe that they really were "elves". The pit band sounded amazing and when we looked to see them, we were surprised at how small the pit really was. The singing from all the cast was top notch. The scenery was spectacular and the scene changes were quick and seamless. If there is any constructive criticism it would be to have Buddy be a bit more excited and silly. There were many times Buddy's performance was a bit lack luster, it was like he was just going through scene to scene with limited emotion. To be fair he is being compared to Will Farrell's performance in the movie. Overall it was a great Christmas experience!

    Elf

by Donnah on 1/1/23Shea's Performing Arts Center - Buffalo

I thought the play was good. I felt it lacked some enthusiasm. The actor playing Buddy was very good but the dancing was very lo key. It seemed something was missing from the play that kept it from becoming great.

Cute but not worth the money

by ARM on 1/1/23Shea's Performing Arts Center - Buffalo

Cute show, but if you’re like me, you went because Elf is your absolute favorite Christmas movie, this show won’t do justice and you’ll be disappointed. Will Ferrel refused to do an Elf sequel, he’d probably be less than enthused by this musical too.

    Elf The Musical

by Syndi T on 12/21/22Palace Theatre Columbus - Columbus

Elf was'so much fun and very magical. I took my grandchildren to see this performance, and even my 16 year old grandson was laughing, and thanked me many times for taking him. I really enjoyed this show!!! Here is what my 25 year old daughter said about the show: "Just saw Elf! The musical with my family and although the play was great and a must see, I had something else bigger on my mind the entire time. Never have I been to a show where a plus size girl has played a lead role, (at least what I've seen) let alone an African American woman. This made the little girl in me so happy, and I'm sure it did for many others. This one goes out to all the little girls who may feel a little different growing up. We can do anything. What a great show Tieisha Thomas"

    Thoroughly enjoyable!

by Jackie on 12/20/22Palace Theatre Columbus - Columbus

One thing, there were a lot of kids in the audience; the few times they cast cussed was inappropriate. As an adult, I didn’t think it was necessary.

Very underwhelming / Not Worth the Money

by AH on 12/20/22Palace Theatre Columbus - Columbus

The tone of this production was wrong from the very outset. From a grouchy lead female character, to a boozed up, gambling Santa - the whole thing just felt wrong for a holiday play. While referential of the movie, the play takes liberties that don’t come across well and the stage sets were completely underwhelming. Many of the jokes have not aged well - including one about being ‘bipolar.’ All of the Peter Dinklage stuff was removed (largely bc the writers probably thought it wasn’t PC), yet they simultaneously have people on their knees playing the roles of the elves, rather than actual people of short stature. It seemed very tone deaf. My wife and I thought we were watching a High School production, and even that might be a generous characterization. The people sitting next to us didn’t even come back for the second act - wish we had followed their lead! Save your money, watch the movie.

    Mediocre

by KateVOhio on 12/20/22Palace Theatre Columbus - Columbus

Show was okay but the writing and performance was pretty mediocre. I was bored after a bit and some people left at intermission. Many left before the last act which was rude but it just wasn’t a great show.
