About

Elf: The Musical On Tour

Since its release in 2003, Elf has risen to the rank of a modern Christmas-movie classic. The film tells the story of Buddy, a North Pole toy-maker who slowly comes to the realization that he's not like the other elves (his 6'3" height being but the first tip-off). Soon he sets off to New York City in search of his real father, leaving a trail of trashed-up department stores, snowball-fight victims, and syrup-soaked spaghetti in his wake. Will Ferrell's hilarious yet heartfelt portrayal of Buddy has transformed the character into a Christmas icon on par with Santa, Rudolph, and Frosty, and the legend of Elf only grows each holiday season, as new generations discover it.

While a much-rumored sequel has yet to materialize, Buddy's tale has found another home on the stage. In November 2010, the musical adaptation of Elf debuted on Broadway, with an original score by the Tony Award-nominated team of composer Matthew Sklar and lyricist Chad Beguelin, and a book by Tony Award winners Thomas Meehan (The Producers) and Bob Martin (The Drowsy Chaperone) that takes some liberties with the film's plot. For one, the play is narrated by Santa Claus himself, rather than the Papa Elf character. But thanks to jaunty, wintry showtunes like "Christmastown" and "Sparklejollytwinklejingley," Elf: The Musical has become a phenomenon in its own right. After smashing box office records at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre on Broadway, the play has spawned a touring production, a soundtrack album, and an animated TV-special offshoot on NBC (2014's Elf: Buddy's Musical Christmas). In 2018, the play hit the road again, venturing across the United States to ensure that seeing Elf on stage remains an annual holiday tradition on par with watching Elf on screen.

    It’s not what I expected

by SSK on 12/14/21Amaturo Theater at Broward Center - Ft Lauderdale

Elf is my quintessential holiday movie so I was SO excited thinking this was a true broadway musical version. It was NOT! This was a middle/high school theatrical performance. While the children were lovely, it was not what I expected and we were very disappointed. We left about 30 mins in. Buyer Beware.

    Totally Misrepresented

by Florida Theatre Fan on 12/14/21Amaturo Theater at Broward Center - Ft Lauderdale

Purchases six tickets to treat my family to a holiday show. Disappointed and a little angry to find out this was a children’s production. Other than a few adults playing key roles, all other players were children, little children. Including Elf. To boot, they were wearing masks and understanding them was impossible. All productions I have seen over the years in the Amaturo theatre have been professional adult performance companies putting on fabulous productions. This was not that. We left disappointed at intermission feeling totally duped. I think we were the only people there not the parents of one of the actors. The way this was marketed did NOT clarify this was a children’s production.

    Elf- no bueno

by Local theater lover on 12/14/21Amaturo Theater at Broward Center - Ft Lauderdale

I understand that this was a theater student production, however my family and I could not stomach staying past intermission. It was an expensive show for the quality. Some actors were good, but many were not- including some of the main characters. There were no sets, just video backgrounds, and all the famous lines were delivered with little to no excitement. The microphones were forgotten to be turned on, and the masks on the performers made understanding their lines extremely difficult. It should have been a production for the friends and family of the actors only.

    Ok experience

by Rose on 12/14/21Amaturo Theater at Broward Center - Ft Lauderdale

The show was cute. The theatre rules were unclear. We were told no food allowed in but saw tons of people eating inside. Mixed messages amongst the staff.

You could not hear the actors very clearly.

by Laney on 12/13/21Amaturo Theater at Broward Center - Ft Lauderdale

A number of things went wrong with this performance. First of all the actors wore mask so it was hard to understand. Some microphones were left on, so you could hear random conversations back stage during the show. The fire alarm went off during the second act, the strobe light was blinding. Over half the audience left at intermission. If I would have know if was going to be this bad, we would have never wasted our money.

    Worst production ever!

by Ocean on 12/13/21Amaturo Theater at Broward Center - Ft Lauderdale

This production of Elf the Musical was just horrendous. The sound was just awful, the people running the audio for the microphones were slow to turn them on, and as a result, you would not hear the actor until a few seconds after they started talking. Also in this production, every one of the actors wore vinyl masks. Now I know we are currently living during a pandemic, but going to a show and paying to watch actors with masks on their faces, and not be able to understand most of what they are saying because of the muffling of the sound, is totally unacceptable. Whoever is running this theater and agreed to accept these conditions made a big mistake. During the show, so many people were frustrated at not being able to hear, and from the lack of not being able to turn the microphones on in time, that dozens of paying customers left the theater even before the intermission. Management needs to rethink what is acceptable and unacceptable for performances at the theater. Otherwise, people will just not attend anymore.

    Not for older kids

by Mom of 3 Teens on 12/13/21Amaturo Theater at Broward Center - Ft Lauderdale

I was excited about kicking off our Holiday season with a family trip to the theater to watch Elf. I was a bit disappointed as the performance was just ok. Getting their, entering the building, showing our vax status was all a breeze. Once the show started, we realized that all the cast members were wearing clear plastic masks. This muffled their voices when they were speaking and singing. A lot of it was difficult to understand. I also realize this is amateur theater and the actors are just starting off, but some would forget their lines, or say the wrong thing at the wrong time. Some had to be coached by their fellow actors on what line is next. Some would exit the stage with their mics on and the audience can hear them. This would be a fun experience for younger kids and parents of the actors participating in the play, however, the actors, the direction and the stagehands were just ok. I would recommend starting with actors who do not wear masks, so they're a bit easier to understand. And of course, more practice.

    Disappointed

by Dreyfo on 12/13/21Amaturo Theater at Broward Center - Ft Lauderdale

We left at intermission as all of the performers were wearing some kind of clear vinyl masks (with microphones on the outside. As a result all sounds were very muffled and it was impossible to hear what they were saying or enjoy any of the musical numbers.

    Very disappointing!

by Silveroak on 12/13/21Amaturo Theater at Broward Center - Ft Lauderdale

It was like a children's school production and we couldnt understand the performers because they were all wearing masks.

Acting good - sound and set not so good

by Kathy on 11/16/21Hackensack Meridian Health Theatre at the Count Basie Center - Red Bank

It seemed the lighting was not working in the first half and the sound was muffled at times, and hard to understand. The set was extremely basic, grays and browns and not engaging at all especially for children. I wanted a "WOW" moment for my Nephews and Niece who are 3, 5 and 7. In the second half the back lighting came on and the set was a bit more festive - but still not worth the ticket price. NOT cheap for 4 tickets! Special not was the actor who played Buddy was good and the actor who played the Girlfriend had a very good voice.

    Fun

by Jm on 11/16/21Hackensack Meridian Health Theatre at the Count Basie Center - Red Bank

It was really cute. The dance numbers were great and so was the singing. My 5 year old enjoyed it but it seemed to lean more toward adults. I asked him his favorite part and he said "all of it!". The little kids behind me seemed bored so may not be suited for under 5 year olds. The cast is very talented. Great to see a quality show without the hassle and expense of going into the city. Would go again.

Elf the Musical - Tobys Dinner Theatre

by Leisel on 8/11/21Toby's Dinner Theatre Columbia - Columbia

The show was fantastic. I give it 5 stars. Music and singing was outstanding. The sound quality was perfect...could hear it well, but without it being too loud. We were amazed at how the actors were not only the performers, but also the ones to move the props on and off the stage floor. It was well choreographed. Actors were also our waiters/waitresses before the show and during intermission. Food was very good at the brunch we attended. Our only complaint was that the dining chairs we were sitting in at our table were not comfortable to sit in for that long during the performance. Perhaps if I would have brought a seat cushion with me it would have been more comfortable. The venue itself inside in the lobby could be updated. I still give the whole experience 5 stars, because the show was so good.

    Broadway in Columbia

by Rose on 8/11/21Toby's Dinner Theatre Columbia - Columbia

First, I’ll begin with the location as I didn’t have to navigate through the DMV traffic. Second, the food choices were excellent as well as the servers and busboys. Last but not least the showmanship and talent of the cast was amazing! I’ve now found a place to wear all these shoes I purchased during the pandemic.

Seat Guests Earlier Start on Time

by D. G. on 11/17/19California Theatre of the Performing Arts - San Bernardino

Only suggestion, instead of opening the doors for seating 30 minutes prior, why not open the doors 40 minutes prior. Due to the large number of guest arriving after 2 pm, the play did not start until around 2:15 pm. Open the doors earlier and start on time. The entire cast did an exceptional performance. Extreme talent!

We came after Christmas during everyone's college break; it was a fun night! And we LOVED Buddy - our standout favorite. Plus, kid brother Michael was amazing... Wonderful acting, and his voice slayed me!
