HOT TUNA put on another great show at Westbury on Saturday, August 17th, 2019. Jorma & Jack Cassady and their drummer played so well together and sounded great. Larry Campbell & Theresa Williams opened the show (with the same drummer from Hot Tuna!} and they were really great also. I had never seen them perform before and I really enjoyed them. They are very talented and sounded terrific! Jorma came out at the end of their set & played a Hot Tuna song {"Keep your lamplight trimmed and burning"..., I believe}, which was awesome. Then Hot Tuna came out and played & played. Their set was shorter than usual since they had an opening act, but they sounded great and did not disappoint at all. Still played for an hour and a half. I guess they have to end by 11PM, with encore & all, but they played right up until then. Played "The Water Song" for an encore, which is just such a treat and sounded beautiful.
Great show!!! These old guys can still put on a good show. It's been 40 years since I last saw them. Back then it was about 6 hours long at the Commack Arena. Can't do that anymore with the bogus curfews at all the venues. Still, I was happy!!!
The “special guests” opening for Hot Tuna were excellent, too bad they weren’t introduced when they first came on. The crowd seemed to be rude & especially unruly. Constant walking back & forth in front of audience trying to watch the stage & enjoy the show. Hot Tuna was fabulous though!
While they don’t play 4-5 hours per concert anymore, Jorma and Jack respectively 78 & 75 years young still play quality electric blues, from Traditional, Jefferson Airplane and of course Hot Tuna discographies of songs. Jorma still lyrical picking his guitar and Jack still thumping his bass guitar. Life is good.
Very powerful music performance, but I saw them last year at Great South Bay and he projected a little better. It seemed Jorma (my guitar idol) was a little subdued with the vocals. Maybe it was just his mood that night. He is always great and the band played masterfully. Jack actually smiled once or twice! I wish they would have said something about their 50 year commemoration, there was almost nothing said, not even one fabled story! The man came out with his bio last year also.......
Jorma and Jack still give it all they have on stage. Both are so talented and their warm up act of Larry Campbell and Theresa Williams got an amazing reception from the crowd. Jorma came out to play on their last song which happened to be one of my favorite Hot Tuna songs and that was a show highlight. Do not miss your next opportunity to see either of these tremendous acts.
The show featuring Bromberg and Tuna couldn’t have been planned better. Excellent place for the show. Summer, Asbury Park Convention Center, outdoors dining, boardwalk vibe, people, music, great fun. Many memories seeing EHT at this venue during the years then sharing the bill with Bromberg. Classic greatness.
Great Band! Glad to see they haven't slowed down after 50 plus years performing!
David Bromberg and band put on a great show. They played many songs from David's storied past. I did not remember the song names but was familiar with many. David was a BIG deal on Philly FM in the 70's. His group members were all very talented. They went from howling electric blues to kick ass mandolin playing. The guitarist was excellent and the "kid" on fiddle was amazing. Many styles, all entertaining, the perfect first act. Hot Tuna never fails to deliver an excellent show. Jack is my favorite bass player of all time! Jorma was dynamic, versatile, and exiting in his playing. Somehow he always keeps the performances fresh even though I have seen Hot Tuna many times. The next day I awoke to WXPN playing Jefferson Airplane at Woodstock. I heard Jorma and Jack jamming from 50 years ago and just saw them live. Thank you Jorma, Jack, and David Bromberg for carrying on.
What can one say - Paramount theater is a great place to see a concert and Electric Hot Tuna is always a great show; this was just the 3-piece version, no mandolin. Yep, they rocked! Equally impressive was the David Bromberg quintet - all great musicians and could have listened to them all night!
I wasnt familiar with David Bromberg but i enjoyed his eclectic set. Hot Tuna was great but their set was a little short. I guess age is catching up to them.
Great Rock and roll fun! My 5th show and always a great time with great music and interesting crowd!
Jorma / Hot Tuna has been one of my all time favorite musicians since the '70's. Splurged on 3rd row seats. Had to leave at intermission, this time. Perhaps it was the sound guy (if there was one). In this digital era, there is no excuse why sound has to be incredibly loud to be great. Our ears won't last that kind of abuse and I enjoy music too much to give up the hearing I have left. Perhaps one set of acoustic and then a set of electric would have worked better. Jorma also seemed more interested in playing to the drummer than he did the audience. Real bummer.
All these years and this band still brings it all and leaves it on the stage!!! If their coming to your town it’s a no miss show
The band in top form, a relentless charging blast, old guys truly do rock out! Steve Kimock was a very tasty addition to the Tuna menu, his Garcia-esque solo on Good Shepherd was amazing. Hope they come back soon for an acoustic night!
I was really excited to see my favorite band only to so disappointed. Now before I go on please let me say I think these guys are very talented and can still play. Maybe it was the setlist but I really don't want to hear Jorma play his new stuff. I'm just a fan of their old music and that is what I wanted to hear. It's not like the audience has been getting any younger and want to hear new music, that's not what there known for. So all things being equal I left after the first intermission.
The prospect of seeing Jorma and Jack play as Electric Hot Tuna made me venture to the Variety for the first time. Don't know why I waited so long. Saw them play in Jersey last year at an outdoor venue and was a little disappointed with the sound quality. That wasn't the case Friday night. Sitting In the middle towards the back I was blown away by the 2015 version of Hot Tuna. The sound was mixed to perfection in short time, Jack played a lot more animated than in the past and Jorma blazed through the set. Can't wait to go back to the Variety and see another show in that intimate setting.
These guys are as tight as ever. The drummer was excellent, he even did a solo. I wasn't crazy about Jorma playing the acoustic guitar but when he played electric it was just like old times.
I'd never seen them before even though they've been around since '69 but it was worth the wait. The band was tight song after song. Pure joy! They have a younger guy that's playing with them that is quite the gifted musician. He went from violin-mandolin-keyboards-guitar seamlessly. His wife sang on & off (sounds slightly like Grace Slick) & played a little acoustic guitar at times. Neil & Jorma are still loving what they do & it shows.
