El Monstero – a Tribute To Pink Floyd in Concert

Many tribute bands are dedicated to the music and visuals of Pink Floyd, but few are as ambitious as El Monstero – a Tribute to Pink Floyd. Based in St. Louis, the troupe pairs an arena-caliber light and video show with meticulous attention to detail: They once borrowed the actual inflatable pig owned by Pink Floyd, and have also been known to hire a helicopter to fly over the crowd to provide the proper sound effects for the music. Their onstage presence certainly earns them the tag "The Definitive U.S. Pink Floyd Tribute Experience," as the band's arresting musicianship captures the evocative emotional arcs of the David Gilmour and Roger Waters era of Pink Floyd.

Near the end of the year, the group books an annual run of shows at popular indoor St. Louis venue the Pageant, a 2,300-capacity space that's adjacent to the Delmar Loop. They also regularly do out-of-town gigs in Springfield and Kansas City, and they've collaborated live with the St. Louis Philharmonic Orchestra on bigger concerts that add majestic flourishes to Pink Floyd's music. In recent years, El Monstero has also branched out for summer shows at the St. Louis–area outdoor venue the Hollywood Casino Amphitheatre.

El Monstero – a Tribute To Pink Floyd Background

It's tough to beat the pedigree of the musicians in El Monstero. The group was founded by members of the St. Louis rock band Stir, who decided to do a covers show around Thanksgiving 1999 that drew 900 people. From there, El Monstero continued to play gigs around the holidays, even as their personnel evolved: Stir bassist Kevin Gagnepain stayed aboard and was joined by members of nationally signed bands the Urge (drummer John Pessoni, keyboardist Bill Reiter) and Kingofthehill (vocalist/guitarist Jimmy Griffin) — all of whom had continued to hone their craft in other St. Louis bands — as well as a group of talented local instrumentalists, including vocalist/guitarist Mark Thomas Quinn, and backing singers. Together, El Monstero is a testament to the power of Pink Floyd, and to the power of community.

El Monstero Continues to Amaze Me!

by SaraLee91 on 12/24/10The Pageant - St Louis

This is the second year I have gone to this concert! It is such an amazing experience. The band members are serious rock stars who know their instruments like the back of their hand. The concert is not just a few guys standing around playing Pink Floyd either, it is a performance that you wont want to look away from! I would recommend this concert to anyone who loves Pink Floyd or just loves good live music. I plan on attending this concert for many years to come!

    Roger in the flesh?

by CB86 on 12/24/10The Pageant - St Louis

Excellent. And I have to say, I am blown away at how similar the sound is to Pink Floyd. I can close my eyes and it's just like Roger is singing the wall. Keep up the great work.

    Outstanding as usual

by buzzsawbob on 12/23/10The Pageant - St Louis

I happen to to get the new on stage seats this year. Not enough can be said about the band. The music and vocals were outstanding and I am a picky music critic. It was a great Idea to move the stage out so the audience could see the whole band and props. Last year I was on the right side of the balcony and could barely see the drummer, the video screen and band members on the back of the stage. While it was very cool sitting on the stage and seeing the band that close, I will go back to the reserved balcony seats next year. Looking at the bands backs for most of the show isn't for me. I want to watch the band play and sing not stare at their backs. I think they should drop the on stage seating and bring the props back on stage where everyone can see them better.I think they should make the whole floor reserved seating so most of the venue can enjoy the concert in some confort. Seems like the Pageant oversells these shows so th people with GA tickets cant even find a place to stand where you can see the show. I was disappointed that they did not use the lighted grim reaper at the beginning of Shine on you Crazy Diamonds. I hope next year they go bak to using more props. That is what makes this show so much more than just a concert. I thought the video screen was much better than the TV's on stage and I wasn't impressed by the lazer show this year either. All right now that I got all my coplaints off my chest the show was still truely amazing and I will be back next year.

    El Monstero 2010

by vera11 on 12/22/10The Pageant - St Louis

Sound was poor, guitar solos drowned out and vocals were fuzzy. Go back to standarad stage setup. Disappointed.

    Changes

by JellieD on 12/22/10The Pageant - St Louis

Different from the past years, but still entertaining and fun!! Believe people on the stage took up too much room & limited the performers range of movement and props--but I did like the look of the overall stage & the many flatscreens!

    New stage detracts from music

by MikeOB725 on 12/22/10The Pageant - St Louis

I am a 12 year veteran of the El Monstero y Los Masked Avengers tribute to Pink Floyd. Yes I was there in 1999 at Mississippi Nights. It was the start of a beautiful relationship. Christmas tradition starts with the show. Our tradition now starts with a tailgate of sorts outside the Halo bar at 11:00 AM in the morning. You see I prefer the GA seats on the first floor. (BTW what's with reserved tables before we arrive inside? Friends and family? What about us regulars?) I loved the show again this year but felt that it was one of the weaker shows that I have seen: The stage detracted from the show and the music. I think the boys should go back to the original intimate stage as it enhances the music. Bring back Mark Quinn. His role was diminished this year and it didn't look like his heary was in it. The set list didn't flow. The Wall first side should be done in its entirety. If you choose to do a song like Dogs, Pigs, or Echoes. Do it in its entirety or don't do it at all. We are Floyd fanatics. We get it. The mix was poor. I was on stage right next to the soundboard. I could hear Brian's guitar but could hardly hear Jimmy's. That was really evident in "Comfortably Numb" That's my observations. But we will be back next year. "Dark Side of the Moon" is worth the price of admission. See you at Celebration Day on the 26th. I already bought 10 tickets.

    El Monstero

by MUrah on 12/22/10The Pageant - St Louis

I went the first night, Friday, Dec 17th. The music sounded GREAT!!! The new stage setup had the audience sitting in the back which looked to take up alot of previous stage space. There were a bunch of TVs, but I feel like they were not really used for anything. I was a little disappointed that they removed most of the theatrical aspects that they have incorporated in past years, which I thought really added to the show before. It was more like just a concert with the musicians standing around singing on stage. But overall it was still good and I would probably go back.

I've been going to concerts for 32 years and i will tell you this machine they call El monstero is THE BEST tribute I have seen. This a must see for all you Pink Floyd fans. The musicianship that those guys bring to the stage is just awesome. Roger Waters should take note... these guys can run with your boys and .....well I'll just say they kicked ass and leave at that.
