About

Debuting their second album at No. 5 on the Billboard 200, the whimsical and fiercely nonconformist musical group Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros finished up their 2013 summer tour just in time to prepare for their next circuit in the New Year. Known as much for their relentless concert schedule as their recognizable 60s hippie commune sound, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros are reinvigorating the folk rock music scene alongside occasional tour mates, Mumford and Sons. Expressing a positive, love-one-another vibe while exploring self-image in their music, lead singer Alex Ebert (from Ima Robot) and his many merry cohorts put on energetic live shows that feel both intimate and global. This is no doubt thanks to Ebert’s personal journey, which began with the creation of his alter ego, Edward Sharpe, and his pilgrimage from self-indulgent lovesick drug addict to magnanimous creative.

After strapping on the mantle of Mr. Sharpe, Ebert collected childhood friends, musicians and Jade Castrinos, a one-time sweetheart who shares the vocals in the wildly popular single “Home,” among others, and began playing shows in 2007. In 2009, they toured the nation in a white school bus. Now boasting three full-length albums, including “Up From Below,” “Here” and their recent self-titled work, the collective intends to release some B-sides before completing a fourth album. Though fans may have to wait to hear the next selection of avant-garde musical pieces, they can buy tickets to a show that’s almost certainly coming to a city near them soon. Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros are undeniably unique in appearance, stage presence and sound, and the deliriously happy disciples have an enchanting effect, even when played through car speakers.

    Edward Sharpe @ Royce Hall

by PerryStahlsis on 5/21/10Royce Hall - UCLA - Los Angeles

This is music for a new conscious millennium. I went to Monterey in 1967. I saw Big Brother at the Avalon. Jade is the best natural female voice since Janis. These folks are channeling like Jimi. Caveat: This is not music to be wasted as background for self-absorbed smart-phone texting or mindless over-consumption at your local 7 million square foot landfill staging area aka outlet mall. This band is modeling engagement and hope in a time of despair for the planet and it's life forms. Get up, get on your feet and do something! Maybe that way you'll have healthy and secure grandchildren and you can tell them that you saw The Magnetic Zeros live.

Edward Sharpe at UCLA Royce Hall

by Wishrock1 on 5/21/10Royce Hall - UCLA - Los Angeles

The band was on fire last night---It was different having seats at their concert though. You can tell that the band missed connecting with their fans. Still a great treat for the UCLA students!

    Great concert experience... again.

by popfart on 5/21/10Royce Hall - UCLA - Los Angeles

I saw them about a month ago in San Diego and I knew I had to see them again once the UCLA gig was announced. They did not fail to disappoint. The dozen or so musicians are a very talented group and Alex Ebert, the charismatic lead vocalist and Jade Castrinos (lead female vocalist) are the stars of the show. The chemistry between the two and the interaction with the others in the group elevates the music to a higher plane. All of the songs, from their current album, translate extremely well to a live setting. Looking forward to another show real soon. Go see them now before they move on to bigger venues...

Edward Sharpe and the Baker's Dozen

by Anonymous on 5/21/10Royce Hall - UCLA - Los Angeles

What a delicious experience being in the same room with this band and it's devotees! If you ever just want to be happy and sing and sway again, in a place where the world is your oyster and you are surrounded by "it's okay" well, then, come on over! Join the fun. Love this venue too!

    Edward sharpe was unique show!

by LiotheLion on 1/9/10Mayan Theater - Los Angeles

I like it when artists mingles with the fans. On one of the song they had the whole floor sit down and the bands also sat down on stage. Almost like we were in a drum circle listening to some good live music and relaxing.

Edward Sharpe drowned by bad sound!

by Manonash on 12/15/09Mayan Theater - Los Angeles

I loved Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros at the El Rey Theatre a few months back so I was eager to see them at the Mayan last night (Dec. 14) but the sound in that place was so horrible that I left extremely disappointed. I started in the balcony where the sound bounces off the walls like you're in a cave, then went downstairs and tried several listening spots but found that wherever I went, the vocals were drowned out by the kick drum. Why do so many bands make the kick drum so loud? As a long time fan of bands like the Clash and the Who, I've been to many very loud concerts but the musicians were always able to communicate with the audience and make a heart to heart connection with them. Unfortunately, when the kick drum and bass drown out the keyboards, guitar and especially the vocals, the audience misses the connection. When Alex Ebert (aka Edward Sharpe) spoke to the crowd, we could barely make out his words. It's a shame because the band is wonderful, with a great set list but the instruments get lost in the heavy bottom end.

    Amazing Performance

by johnwatersfan on 12/15/09Mayan Theater - Los Angeles

I had purchased the Edward Sharpe album through I-Tunes, but didn't know anything about the band, and hadn't seen them perform. All I can say is, "wow," these guys really put on a show! I see a lot of live music, but in terms of energy and interaction with the audience, these guys are tops. I found myself digging up every video of them online when I got home in order to re-live the experience. I would absolutely see them again.

The acoustics in the Mayan are awful!!

by lokidelfuego on 12/15/09Mayan Theater - Los Angeles

The Band was a bit of a mess. They didn't even sing all of the song Home, due to audio issues on stage. The sound in the Mayan was really bad. Half the time you couldn't even hear Ed sing.

    Great performers, lousy venue

    by Gerg33 on 12/4/09Varsity Theater - Minneapolis

I used to love the Varsity Theater, but this experience was very disappointing and I don't think I'll attend another concert there again soon. The band experienced significant sound issues, including a lead singer's microphone that kept cutting out to his evident frustration. It seems like when you have one of the hottest bands in the country coming to town, you wouldn't have duct-taped together mics. Also, I found the staff to be rude and unhelpful. The bathroom lines are ridiculously long, too. Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros are a wonderful band and put on a great show despite the difficulties. They really feel like they're bringing everyone into their party. But there is another of my favorite bands coming to the Varsity in January and I'm seriously considering skipping the show to protest the venue's apparent amateur management.

Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros et al....

by JasonECWI on 11/30/09Varsity Theater - Minneapolis

Great show. Wow does Jade have a powerful voice! The Varsity is a great venue for this type of group, although they had some technical glitches which added to the quirky nature of the show.

Edward Sharpe is what is next!!

    by osbo0103 on 11/30/09Varsity Theater - Minneapolis

One of the best shows I have ever been to. Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros are the greatest band out there that no one knows. I'm so glad I got to see them twice before they started growing (saw them once in Ames Iowa when there was only about 25 in attendance!!). Every time they have been to Minneapolis they have raised the bar for what I expect from live music.

    we were all celebrating

by woodysharp on 11/30/09Varsity Theater - Minneapolis

fabulous concert as Edward and his group had the entire house moving and at times singing. wish they could have sang the entire album and done a second rendition of home during the encores. His inviting the concert goers to sit with him and the band for the final song was meditative.

    What can you give me?

by Awwsnappp on 11/19/09Music Hall of Williamsburg - Brooklyn

This is what Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros ask us in complete sincerity last night. They came out, were tired but fully committed, and brought the room to a place of joy and celebration. The show was full of touching moments, Like when frontman Alex Ebert let a patron in the front have a sip of his Guinness, then let him have the whole beer (he then walked over to the amplifier to grab a second can and began drinking with a smile). ESMZ know the power of a live performance, and use their arrangements and energy to create a full experience. Please go see them if you have a chance.

This show was an absolute blast. All three bands were SO much fun to watch and dance with. Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros have the most unique energy I've ever seen at a concert. They completely blew my mind. The Local Natives had amazing harmonies. I loved the Hebrew lyrics of Fools Gold. And to top it all off, the Music Hall of Williamsburgh is a sick venue.

by fragilebox on 11/8/09The Loft - Dallas

Ya so i went for my favorite band, The Deadly syndrome, and im glad i went, because these guys rocked totally, amazing band. So ya I recommend it to people who like kinda groovy music. I couldn't exactly categorize these guys in to a specific genre, they make their own.
