About

What is EchoPark Speedway?

Hampton, Georgia, is home to one of the most iconic tracks in stock car racing and hosts two NASCAR race weekends each year. EchoPark Speedway has been in operation since 1960, and its 1.54 mile quad-oval track has long been known as one of the fastest in motorsports. EchoPark Speedway also hosts Monster Jam, car shows, the Georgia State Fair, local High School Graduations and hundreds of other events throughout the year.

EchoPark Speedway History

Ground was broken in 1958 for what was originally known as Atlanta International Raceway, opening on July 31, 1960, with Fireball Roberts winning the inaugural Dixie 300. From 1960 until 2011, the Speedway was home to two annual NASCAR events: the Atlanta 500 in the spring, and the Dixie 500 in the fall. In 1990, Speedway Motorsports Inc. bought the track, adding condominiums to the course in 1994 and almost completely rebuilding the track in 1997.

Some of the most iconic moments in NASCAR history have taken place at the Speedway. Before the advent of the Race to the Cup, EPS was often the last stop on what is now known as the NASCAR Cup circuit, leading to some incredible finishes to the season. The 1992 Hooters 500 featured Richard Petty's final NASCAR race, Jeff Gordon's NASCAR debut, and a legendary ending in which Bill Elliott won the race, but Alan Kulwicki won the Winston Cup title.

This was our first live nascar race weekend. Even though it got rained out we were one of few who could come back for the rescheduled race. It still rained more but we all held out and we got the whole race. Loved the live race, would do it again if given the opprotunity.

  • rainy night in georgia!

by mrstinman on 9/10/11Atlanta Motor Speedway - HamptonRating: 1 out of 5

We were excited to be @ the race, but after a 3 hour rain delay, the race was rained out! It was definitely a rainy night in Georgia! We were among the 75% that had to be back @ work/college Tuesday morning... so we did NOT get to see the race @ all! We drove up from Florida. It was a waste of our money & time!!! But... you just can't argue with Mother Nature!

Went on Sunday loved the seats, could not take off work on Tuesday so I didn't get to see the race..sure would have loved to have been there to see Gordon win. I'm a Gordon and Johnson fan but love to see anyone win other then Kyle Busch.

  • Very Upset

by Anonymous on 9/9/11Atlanta Motor Speedway - HamptonRating: 1 out of 5

I have never attended a race and my son wanted to attend a race for his 12th birthday. We traveled to Atlanta fron Knoxville on SUnday the 4th to watch the race. The race was cancelled due to weather and rescheduled for Tuesday when I had to be at work. I spent $220.00 for tickets $75.00 for parking in chapion parking lot. $150.00 on fuel and about $50.00 on gifts. On sunday I spent about $450.00 and still never seen the first car go around the race. I feel there is something serioursly wrong with this!

  • by Itallian on 9/8/11Atlanta Motor Speedway - HamptonRating: 5 out of 5

As disappointing as it was spending 8 hrs at the track paying 20.00 to park all the money spent for food and gas driving 200 miles then coming back on Tuesday to finally get to watch the whole race was well worth it. Thank you NASCAR for doing all you did to make my first race a memorable one. I came from New Mexico for this race

  • NASCAR IS AWESOME !!

by kendall on 9/8/11Atlanta Motor Speedway - HamptonRating: 5 out of 5

I have never been to a NASCAR race before, and my first experience was sunday when it was rained out !! they didnt make it clear to us if they were rescheduling the race for quite sometime. Finally they announced it and it was rescheduled and i finally got to see my first NASCAR race on tues....i couldn't hear the announcements at all....i tried to rent a headset but the vendors were out...so it was a bit difficult to understand the 'cautions'....the t.v. screens showing the cautions could be bigger and maybe even adding another screen t.v. would be better for viewing.....overall....i LOVED my first NASCAR race !!

unfortunately the race was rained out and we could not attend on the Tuesday due to the fact we had to work. The pre race was nice and the festivities. Even in the rain it was a great time. I wish that NASCAR would race more than once in Atlanta

It was the worst experience I ever had at a public event. The scheduling of the initial race was misorganized. The event planners should have known, at least a couple of days in advance that a storm was coming. The rescheduled date was inconvenient for those who had to go back to work. In this economy with people losing their jobs, picture someone callining in to attend a NASCAR event on Tuesday. It was also inconvenient for school-aged children who had to go back to school after a long holiday weekend.

  • Worst experince with a track ever.

    by MDR67 on 9/8/11Atlanta Motor Speedway - HamptonRating: 1 out of 5

Race rained out Sunday. Was unable to go Tuesday. Zero options for any type of reimbursement or credits from AMS. Will be lucky if I deal with that track again.

  • it was a wash

    by sr34evr on 9/8/11Atlanta Motor Speedway - HamptonRating: 5 out of 5

The race was incredible, but too bad I was at home watching it on tv!! It started raining around 4:00pm and didn't stop long enough to race. I know there are reasons for the race to start at the scheduled time, but moving the start time up to 12 or 1 would have allowed the race to be completed on the scheduled day.

  • Rain

    by mastere62052 on 9/8/11Atlanta Motor Speedway - HamptonRating: 1 out of 5

Normally this would be a great race. But thanks to the poor advanced planning by NASCAR I never got to watch the race.

  • by harley1200xl on 9/8/11Atlanta Motor Speedway - HamptonRating: 4 out of 5

this was a good event except for the RAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Great Race

    by david3815 on 9/8/11Atlanta Motor Speedway - HamptonRating: 4 out of 5

I was impressed with the efforts of Atlanta Motor Speedway and Nascar to make the race happen and run the complete race. It was a good race and the action wasn't too bad.

  • The Race That Wasn't

by Trashtalkin on 9/8/11Atlanta Motor Speedway - HamptonRating: 2 out of 5

The concert was fantastic but at the price we paid for tickets it was a really expensive concert. As for the race, unfortunately not everyone (especially accountants) can get off on a Tuesday during month end close. I was extremely disappointed.
