ECHO & THE BUNNYMEN IN CONCERT:

Formed in the late-'70s wake of punk's first wave, Echo & the Bunnymen forged a unique fusion of post-punk, new wave, and neo-psychedelia that established them as pioneers of a new direction in British rock. Today the band's moody, sophisticated sound is as compelling as ever, and their spellbinding live shows are the perfect place to experience it in the flesh. Whether brooding frontman Ian McCulloch is belting out classics from seminal 1984 album Ocean Rain or performing new material from 2014's Meteorites, Echo & the Bunnymen never fail to mesmerize with muscular musicianship and intense performances on their unforgettable tours.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Echo & the Bunnymen formed in Liverpool in 1978, taking their name from a list of nonsensical monikers suggested by a friend. The band made their debut in 1979 with "The Pictures on My Wall", released on the now-legendary Mute Records imprint. Their 1980 album debut Crocodiles was a critical and commercial success, cracking the UK Top 20 and setting the stage for the success of sophomore album Heaven Up Here, which reached the Top 10 in 1981. Their chart run continued in 1983 with third album Porcupine, the vessel for hit singles "The Back of Love" and "The Cutter" and predecessor to the band's landmark 1984 album Ocean Rain, widely considered by critics as the pinnacle of their '80s output. After taking a hiatus between 1993-1996 the band reformed with a vengeance, scoring another Top 10 hit with "Nothing Lasts Forever" and delivering a powerful series of performances on tour. With their 12th studio album Meteorites hitting shelves in 2104, Echo & the Bunnymen have fans eagerly awaiting their next live shows. Previously, Echo & the Bunnymen has sold out venues to capacity, like The Fillmore (Minneapolis) and Fox Theater (Oakland).

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:

"Amazing show. Ian's voice has not changed a bit. The band sounds the same as the first time I heard them. Bravo!"

"The Bunnymen did amazing renditions of their albums. The improvisation on Crocodiles brought back many great live memories of Bunnymen past shows."

"It was an amazing show. The band sounded incredible and Ian was very much a dynamic presence. Two complete albums were played, along with encores, so it was definitely a show to remember."

  • Bunnymen Cloaked in Darkness

by BunnyChick on 10/27/09NOKIA Theatre LA LIVE - Los AngelesRating: 1 out of 5

They performed the entire concert in darkness. Really, I'm not kidding (except for maybe 20 seconds during the entire show). What were they thinking? I could see the audience better than the so called "performers" on the stage. They sounded fantastic but I guess they never heard of using a spot light so the audience could see them. I felt ripped off and will not see them again. Wish I could get a refund.

  • Nokia Theater Over Rated

by themaravillakid on 10/27/09NOKIA Theatre LA LIVE - Los AngelesRating: 4 out of 5

Echo and the Bunnymen can still deliver the goods. Nice touch with the orchestra at the beginning of the show. I would definite watch another show by them but I have to be honest, those wide angle seats in the orchestra section of the Nokia Theater just have the viewers, who have the misfortune of having those seats, to removed from the stage. I would have much rather been in the balcony or mezzanine sections then that far to the right of the stage. It also took them a long time to set up. But again great show once it got going.

  • Echo and the Bunnymen/Ocean Rain tour 2009

by Krimeny on 10/27/09NOKIA Theatre LA LIVE - Los AngelesRating: 4 out of 5

LA show first 1/2 included an orchestra and full performance of the Ocean Rain album. That was a treat. Not sure what's up with Ian M. and his hatred of stage lighting, I wonder if people not in the first few rows from the stage could see anything at all during the show? But regardless of that - Ian's voice has not wavered any in these years, he sounded great as did the rest of the band.

  • not a fun show

by raheemmachine on 10/27/09NOKIA Theatre LA LIVE - Los AngelesRating: 1 out of 5

we went to this show expecting to see a show. i get it , echo is arty and poetic, but i didnt pay 60 bucks to watch a band perform in the dark . i love these guys but you couldn't see them . they had the whole stage backlit with only their silhouettes visible. they played a slide show of the bands photo montage on the jumbo trons / giant screens . i was hoping to see the band playing. after about 10 songs the band took a break and didnt tell anyone they were coming back . the house lights came up . and people started leaving? then they came on 20 mins later with no explanation. later i found out that it was a play the OCEAN RAIN entirely and then come back for another set. I can listen to the records at home with the lights outs and drink alot cheaper. I wanted to SEE the band not just hear them. aside from that, they sounded great. not much of a show though But i dont think he was ever into putting on a show . should have been in a much smaller place . it would have been better .

  • Almost Perfect

by Alwave on 10/27/09Fox Theater - Oakland - OaklandRating: 4 out of 5

Despite a minor letdown due to unmet built-up expectations, the boys finished up Ocean Rain admirably, then launched into a conventional concert for the second half, playing more relaxed...that is to say, more like themselves. Got the feeling that while Ocean Rain is/was a spectacular event, the boys labored through it, rather than enjoyed their own performance.

Excellent Show! Love the Ocean Rain Setlist! Sound was Amazing!!!

  • Where were the stage lights??

by larosie on 10/26/09NOKIA Theatre LA LIVE - Los AngelesRating: 3 out of 5

First time at this venue - thought it was a great place for a concert. The show rocked, Echo was fantastic, first half w/orchestra great, the whole thing. BUT, WHERE WERE THE STAGE LIGHTS???? Also, why have those big screens on side of stage if you are not going to use them ive??? I felt like I could have stayed home and listended to a live album. Maybe it was a cover band lipsynching to a live album! That is why I gave it an overall 3 star average rating. I would have given them 5 stars if I could have seen them!

  • First Half Sucked / Second Half Rocked

by Joannnnnnn on 10/26/09NOKIA Theatre LA LIVE - Los AngelesRating: 3 out of 5

Too long intermission (1 hour!) between starting band and Echo... with idiotic non-related music, people selling popcorn (what is this, a concert or a baseball game) and soda-pop. Totally ruined the concert atmosphere/mood. Finally when they started, big screens showing a "family photo album" of Echo's past... too bright and ruining concert mood more. Plus, they stopped after 6-7 songs for an intermission... is this a joke, we thought! Are we at the theater or at a rock concert. Finally, after a bright lights intermission, the second half started, and it was good, the way it should have been the whole time. Great music, in the dark, great light and smoke effects, real power. I'm sure they lost a bunch of people after the first half...

  • Do it dirty!

by Brunothekid on 10/26/09NOKIA Theatre LA LIVE - Los AngelesRating: 5 out of 5

The concert was amazing. The orchestra made all the songs sound so much better and it painted a picture that made it all seem real. Ian was being Ian, and he was also funny, if you can understand half of what he says. Ian's voice was in top form for this concert, compared to other concerts (House of Blues). It may be because they did not let him smoke on stage, which is a plus because he let go and sang his heart out. Will is one of the best guitarist ever. I wish I would have sat closer to him just to watch him play, but always a great sound. The fans got into the music and band felt the vibe. Thanks for the amazing show!

  • Bring on the Bunnymen!

by Roz73 on 10/26/09NOKIA Theatre LA LIVE - Los AngelesRating: 5 out of 5

Cool, melodic, and mysterious. Echo is mizmerizing.

  • WOW

by NatRat on 10/26/09NOKIA Theatre LA LIVE - Los AngelesRating: 5 out of 5

Amazing, Chilling, Moving and Spectacular. The show was absolutely to die for. I can't say enough about the band and the voice!!! I literally got chills listening to his voice. A must see if you didn't get a chance. I didn't love that I didn't actually get to "see" their faces. Excellent show!!

  • Echo and the Bunnymen is the best band ever!

by MGDN on 10/26/09Fox Theater - Oakland - OaklandRating: 5 out of 5

I just love, love, love Echo and the Bunnymen! I'm immensely on cloud 9!

  • Great listening experience

by Ratphuk on 10/26/09NOKIA Theatre LA LIVE - Los AngelesRating: 4 out of 5

I thought Echo & The Bunnymen sounded fantastic. I enjoyed very much listening to all those great songs performed so well. It was unfortunate that the lighting was such that I couldn't tell you what the band looked like. I think that was on purpose but it was kind of a bummer. That being said, it was a fantastic experience and I would go see them again.

  • Couple things I didn't like

by renway on 10/26/09NOKIA Theatre LA LIVE - Los AngelesRating: 3 out of 5

I enjoyed seeing Echo and the bunnymen playing with the live orchestra. I did not enjoy the slide show that was being shown on the side screens. It was distracting to the concert and too bright. Also didn' care for the lighting on the stage. You couldn' t even see the band at all. I know Ian prefers this, but I was looking at a dark stage with some blue lights in the background. The sound was good though. On the ticketing side, I don't know what happened. I tried numerous times after tickets went on sale to purchase better tickets, but "best available" kept offering tickets further and further back. Finally I bought a ticket in the mezzanine. Turns out, the mezzanine was closed, as was the loge. They put everybody down on the floor because the show was half sold. Who was buying all of the tickets that made best available so far back? I imagine these were being held to release later or were being given out as compls. It's really not fair to true fans.

  • Echo better with age

by tvid on 10/26/09NOKIA Theatre LA LIVE - Los AngelesRating: 5 out of 5

I forgot how good the Oceans Rain album was, it's a true classic that should be played in its entirety frequently. Putting it on live with an orchestra and an incredible light show made for a truly surreal and unforgettable experience. I would rank this show as one of the better performances I have witnessed and I been to a lot of great shows in 35+ years of concert going. My first time to Nokia and the sound could not have been better. It seems to be a top notch venue. My only complaint is their no camera policy which is ridiculous with almost every cell phone having a camera why ban a small portable. Change the rule to professional camera equipment.

  • Loved the Music, hated the lighting

by DaveT123 on 10/25/09NOKIA Theatre LA LIVE - Los AngelesRating: 3 out of 5

I really loved the music performance, but hated the lighting scheme. ...the backlit band for 1.5 hours was not very interesting. Didn't even know half the band was on stage for the first 20 minutes. I came to see the band not shadows.....really distracted from the experience.

  • The Bunnymen still have it!

by misterlosangeles on 10/25/09NOKIA Theatre LA LIVE - Los AngelesRating: 5 out of 5

I was 13 years old (early 80's) when I first heard Echo and the Bunnymen on the radio. I was hooked ever since. I had missed the opportunity to see them in concert in the late 80's when they performed with OMD in Los Angeles, and several other shows thereafter. But yesterday, was redemption. I needed to see them at this venue at the Nokia Theater. I tell you, this long wait was worth it! They not only sounded amazing live, but every single song was a Rembrandt! It's no wonder Cold Play and all these new bands respect them. They still have it...

  • by Anonymous on 10/25/09NOKIA Theatre LA LIVE - Los AngelesRating: 5 out of 5

Great show! Echo has been putting out great music for over 30 years!

  • Amazing, of course, but what about stage presence?

by Sharonthegreat on 10/25/09NOKIA Theatre LA LIVE - Los AngelesRating: 3 out of 5

I love this band, and have for a LONG time!! The sound was amazing, and having an orchestra behind them was ever more amazing! What i wasn't a huge fan of was the stage presence, i felt was lacking. We wanted more interaction. I'll definitely see them again anytime though. LEGENDS!!
